  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, April 2025

As ever, raised solely in stainless steel to achieve maximum brightness and terroir-transparency. The youngest vines are 50 years old, and many are much older and come from a vineyard carpeted in pudding stones. This is super successful in 2023, immediately accessible and approachable. Sweet fruited, with cherry and fresh brambly fruit. A sweet pastry element makes it very moreish indeed. Lovely purity and spritzy freshness here, with a touch of liquorice giving it a darker, more brooding core. A lot to like!

  • Vinous, November 2025, Score: 91+

Blending 70% Grenache with the remainder equally split between Mourvèdre and Syrah, the 2023 Gigondas La Tour Sarrasine starts a little reductive. Time in the glass gradually unlocks just-ripe red fruits, peppery elements and dried herbs. Blackberries add another layer. Much more engaging on the full-bodied palate than the nose, the 2023 offers remarkable overall intensity and freshness. Built around polished tannins and finishing long and spicy, the 2023 is best kept for at least two more years in a cool cellar. Drinking Window: 2027 - 2035

  • Jancis Robinson, October 2024, Score: 16

Tasted blind. Rich red fruits and an earthy note on the nose. A rounded palate with good concentration and finely tuned, detailed tannins. Compact, structured and with a savoury note underneath. Needs time to soften but this is a balanced and attractive style.

Region

Gigondas

An area for red and rosé wines Gigondas has been an appellation in its own right since 1971. Though they can occasionally be more rustic, the reds are often considered a miniature version of Châteauneuf du Pape. Part of this may have to do with the same limited yield restrictions and minimum alcoholic strength (12.5 %), but they also share some of the same varieties including Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Certain bottlings can be approached shortly after release, but many benefit from several years of cellaring. Like Châteauneuf du Pâpe, aged bottles of Gigondas take on appealing gamey and forest floor aromatics which make them particularly enjoyable with roast meats.
