  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

Premier Cru Charmes always possesses a natural opulence with an affinity with oak, and the 2023 is no different. Partly vinified in foudres, the nose shows layers of complexity, with notes of lemon zest, orange peel, butter and toast. The palate is fresher and more saline than expected from a warm vintage, yet flavours of peach and apricot give an impression of breadth. A charming Charmes that will give immediate joy.

  • Wine Advocate, January 2025, Score: 90-91

The 2023 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes (Domaine Louis Jadot) is a solid effort, revealing aromas of pear, white flowers and toasted nuts, framed by a deft touch of reduction. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and fresh, it exhibits good cut and persistence.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2024, Score: 92-95

What a wealth of fruit is there, plus a streak of nervous energy, this is very well done. Always late to pick here but it hasn’t disturbed the fresh energy while optimising the fruit volume. Very good indeed.

  • Julia Harding, November 2024, Score: 17.5

Cask sample. Fragrant and more delicate than the Narvaux. Mouth-watering freshness and massive tension thanks to both acidity and a light tannic grip. With air, there’s a more creamy richness on the palate to balance the initial delicacy.

Producer

Maison Louis Jadot

Founded in 1859 by Louis Jadot, Maison Louis Jadot has always been situated in the centre of Beaune in the heart of the Burgundy vineyards. Managed by three generations of the Jadot family and then by the Gagey family assisted by Jacques Lardière in the cellar, Jadot is now directed by Pierre Henry Gagey, who has introduced a new wine making team, Frédéric Barnier and Guillaume Large. Since careful ageing in wooden barrels is so very important for the balance, aromas and the ageing potential of a great wine, in 1996, Louis Jadot entered into partnership with a firm of coopers, forming Cadus Cooperage, established in Ladoix Serrigny. This allows them to control their wood sourcing and the barrel production. Maison Louis Jadot now controls 105 hectares in Burgundy with more than 70 hectares in the Côte d'Or, exclusively in Premier and Grand Cru. They produce both negociant wines under the Maison Louis Jadot label and a number of Domaines: Gagey, Duc de Magenta, Louis Jadot and Héritiers de Louis Jadot.

Region

Meursault

Meursault is the first great white wine area that one stumbles upon on leaving Beaune. Unlike other white dominated appellations in Burgundy, Meursault has no grand cru vineyards. It nonetheless has significant flair and power which make up for this deficiency. Indeed, if tasted blind some of these wines could even surpass other Burgundian grand crus. They are no fainting daisies. This may partially be due to Meursault's lower water table which enables the roots to delve deep in the soil picking up many trace minerals and which further stresses the vines. In addition, the cellars are more profound and cooler, enabling long fermentations, which increase complexity and longevity. Some interesting red wines are also made.
