From the sector known as Les Petits Epenots, which is recognised for making a fine, poised style of Pommard. A brilliant scarlet red colour, this has an array of red fruits: raspberry, pomegranate and cherry. The red soil minerality is present, giving tension and structure and the fine core of fruit provides impact and complexity on the finish.
The 2023 Pommard Epenots 1er Cru offers more concentration and richness compared to the Les Pezerolles, though it lacks the same degree of precision. The palate is smooth, quite plush and very Volnay-like in texture, but it misses a bit of nerve and backbone on the finish.
This was in the best condition among the Mussy vines, so fewer vine replacements have been needed. Mid crimson red. This has an even-handed generosity of fruit, strawberry, cherry and a suggestion of raspberry. Very fine boned tannins and appreciable length. A good wine from a great vineyard.

A long popular appellation, Pommard is yet another exclusive red wine area which produces by far the most structured reds of the Côte de Beaune. It extracts rich body and long ageing potential from the limestone/iron-rich clay soil. Some examples can be markedly rustic, yet as time has passed and winemaking know-how has improved, Pommard's wines are becoming softer and more approachable when young. Its vines cover 317 hectares of which over a third are premier cru vineyards. Several have pronounced following and even one, Les Rugiens, is being pushed to become a grand cru.
