  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, April 2026, Score: 93-94

Made by the same masterful team as at Pichon Lalande, headed up by Nicolas Glumineau, the 2025 Pez is a cracker. The same gentle extraction used at Pichon Lalande is used here, resulting in a soft and plush expression of the St Estèphe terroir. Supple and charming already, with damsons, blackberries and sweet spice, with a delicate floral lift, all held together with the wonderfully integrated and polished tannins. Persistent and driving finish, leaving a brilliantly fresh finish, this is delicious.

  • Neal Martin, May 2026, Score: 92-94

The 2025 Château de Pez, which contains no Petit Verdot this year, is matured in 50% new oak for 18 months. Nicolas Glumineau said that he is trying to make this more refined with "layers of tannins". It has a reserved nose, quite stony/minerally, with hints of graphite percolating through the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, unadulteratedly classic in style with an off-dry, quintessentially Saint-Estèphe finish. Tasted twice and, in fact, the second sample from a sample raised in a Cadus barrel with a lower toasting was better. Drink 2031-2050

  • Wine Advocate, April 2026, Score: 89-91

Aromas of dark fruit, pencil shavings and toasty oak introduce the 2025 de Pez, a medium- to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated wine with good balance and a youthfully structured finish.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2026, Score: 92-94

The 2025 de Pez is a very serious wine. Blackberry, menthol, licorice, scorched earth, tobacco and incense are all beautifully amplified in the glass. There's gorgeous textural breadth, complexity and class here. All the elements are so well balanced. Drink 2030 - 2045.

  • Jane Anson, April 2026, Score: 93

Plenty of density and silky tannins, with cassis, cappuccino and cocoa beans, high freshness but with real juice and flavour behind. 3.6ph. 8% of press wine. Frederic Rouzaud's father bought this in 1995, and the estate then underwent 20 years of replanting, increasing the Cabernet Sauvignon in the vineyard. The results are clear. 80% 225l oak and 20% foudres, 50% new oak, 3.6pH. 50% new oak. Harvest September 3 to 23.

Region

St Estèphe

St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
