  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, April 2026, Score: 95-97

The first vintage made in the impressive new winery at this popular estate. Brilliant intensity and concentration immediately on the nose. Spicy, and a deeper, darker register of fruit – blackcurrants and dark hedgerow berries, with a floral lift of iris and rose, finishing with a touch of cola and root spice. The tannins are firm but well managed, standing strong with the salty mineral core. There’s a delicate minty note on the finish, adding to the sense of persistence in this wine. A brilliant GPL. Drink 2031-2060

  • Neal Martin, May 2026, Score: 94-96

The 2025 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is the first to be made in the new gravity-fed winery. It was picked between September 4 and 18 at 30 hl/ha, much lower than normal, with a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (76%). Matured in 65% new oak, it has a perfumed bouquet with blackberry and raspberry fruit, touches of graphite emerging with aeration, beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannins. Definitely one of the most refined GPLs that I have tasted at this stage, very harmonious, complex and engaging. Superb persistence on the finish, this is a complete Pauillac that is going to give immense pleasure. Drink 2032-2060

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2026, Score: 92-94

The 2025 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a relatively fruity, soft wine for the château, notwithstanding the warm, dry year and yields 30 hectoliters per hectare (in line with the appellation, but much less than the norm). This is the first vintage Grand-Puy-Lacoste made in their new cellar, so the more vibrant style is not a total surprise. Even so, there is no question that 2025 opens the door to a new chapter. Stylistically, it is quite different from the wines that have preceded it. Drink 2033-2065.

  • Jancis Robinson, May 2026, Score: 17/20

76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot. 30 hl/ha. Cask sample. True to style. Dark-fruit and graphite nose. Lively fruit and freshness. Structured but not abrasive. Good persistence on the finish. Classic. Drink 2032-2050

  • Jane Anson, April 2026, Score: 94

Vibrant, in the spirit of the 2025 vintage, cloves, capsicum, blueberry and cassis fruits, plenty of delicious texture, lovely sappy and bright juice, firm tannins, appellation typicity, crayon and mint leaf. First year for the new cellar. 65% new oak for ageing.

Producer

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

Grand Puy Lacoste sits on top of one of the steepest slopes in Pauillac, a whole 16 metres above the main flatlands! Hardly Himalayan, but the extra 16 metres of pebble-enriched soil results inparticularly excellent drainage. François-Xavier Borie is at the helm of this very impressive château which was purchased in 1978 from Monsieur Dupin.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
