  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, April 2026, Score: 94-96

Always such a unique interpretation of the St Julien terroir, the 2025 Leoville Poyferre is such a pleasure to taste. It's tempting to describe this wine as ‘big’, but that would be doing it a disservice. Bold creamy nose of cassis and spicy oak, rich coffee and glossy plums and cherries, but it’s incredibly lively, and never feels heavy. Vanilla and chocolate on the palate, with cherry and violets, underpinned by velvety tannins that melt into the wine. Wonderfully balanced in this vintage, this will certainly please Poyferre fans.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2026, Score: 94-96

The 2025 Léoville-Poyferré is gorgeous. Rich and juicy, with striking mid-palate pliancy, the Grand Vin shows the vintage at its finest. That is immediately evident in its plush contours and impeccable balance. Dark red/purplish fruit, rose petal, lavender, menthol and mocha flesh out in the glass, filling out the layers effortlessly. The 2025 is a sensual Grand Vin. Drink 2035-2065.

Through modernisation, exceptional vineyard management and meticulous winemaking, it is emerging as a star in its own right. Leoville Poyferre also produces the excellent Ch Moulin Riche.Read less

Region

St Julien

St Julien is like the middle child of the Médoc - not as assertive as Pauillac or as coquettish as Margaux. It lies firmly between the two more outspoken communes and as a result produces a blend of them both. St Julien's wines have often been sought out by aficionados for their balance and consistency, particularly in the UK. Yet due to its middle child nature, it can occasionally be overlooked globally and as a result underrated by those markets outside the UK. Despite the fact that it has no first growths, it has several second growths including Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton, Léoville Poyferré and Ducru Beaucaillou as well as the celebrated châteaux such as Talbot and Beychevelle.
