I have just returned from an amazing few days in Bordeaux. It was a first for my guests, and you could tell by the excitement on their faces at Southend Airport that expectations were running high.
With the sun shining and not a cloud in the sky, we kicked off proceedings with lunch at Lunch La Terrasse Rouge, which sits on top of Château La Dominique in St Emilion. We had a lovely lunch overlooking the vineyards, with Cheval Blanc only a stone’s throw away. The food was outrageously good and the wine list had a lot to offer.
With bellies full, we arrived at Pomerol estate, Château Petit Village. Delicious lunches aside, the château visits were always going to be the interesting part of the trip! Julie Bellot looked after us so well and I highly recommend a visit. After walking round the estate, it was time to get down to business and taste. 2001 Petit Village: Beautiful bouquet with red and black fruits, sweet spices. This classic styled Pomerol has evolved nicely in bottle and should be drunk now or over the next couple of years. 2012 Petit Village: I love the 2012s and this is a very fine example. A polished and classy style which reinforces Petit Village’s position amongst the Pomerol elite.
Next up was the brilliant Château Figeac in St Emilion. We chose to visit this château because, despite its considerable size, it remains family owned. The wines….. 2009 Figeac is a brilliantly balanced, full bodied wine with incredible length. This powerful wine needs time but will be spectacular! 2011 Figeac is very impressive, prettier in style with subtle tannins and good concentration of fruit. Time then, for us to return to the hotel at the end of a very full and satisfying day!
