This morning saw the release of and brisk demand for Ch Calon Segur 2014 at £420 per 12 IB.
This famous old terroir in St Estephe has records showing that it existed as far back as 1147, when it was owned by Monseigneur de Calon, making Chateau Calon Segur a contender for the oldest property in St Estephe. In the 18th Century it came to be owned by Nicolas Alexandre de Segur who also owned Ch Latour and Ch Lafite, and is famously quoted as saying: “I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon.” That quote remains engraved on the label of Chateau Calon Segur, where the drawing of a heart is still featured on the estate’s logo.
The property was then purchased by the Gasqueton family at the end of the 19th Century and remained in their family until the death of the wonderful matriarch of the estate, Madame Denise Gasqueton, passed away in June 2011, aged 87. In 2012 it was purchased by the Suravenir Insurance Company who have made large investments in the winery and the vineyards.
St Estephe most definitely benefited from the September and early October “Indian Summer” and the strength of this fine wine highlights the success of the Cabernet fruit in the appellation, with 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Cabernet Franc in the assemblage. A very bold and robust wine, supported by some appealing harmony and flamboyance coming from the 19% Merlot in the finished blend.
