Due to the increase in fake Ch Lafite in China and elsewhere (see this article at MarketWatch.com) Ch Lafite have adopted the Prooftag security system for both Ch Lafite Rothschild and Carruades de Lafite labelled since Feb 2012. (Lafite 2009 + Lafite and Carruades 2010 onwards)
The seal is applied to the bottle neck (at the back), partly on the capsule and partly on the glass.
It provides two levels of protection:
1. a unique -bubble code- that cannot be reproduced.
2. a 13 character alphanumeric code that is associated with the bubble code
To authenticate a bottle visit the www.lafite.com website, enter the 13 digit code on the bottle, you will then be shown the bubble code which you match against the bottle.
This technology seems to offer good fraud prevention at least in the short term but the value of Lafite is always going to make it a target for the professional fraudster.
