Like buses, sometimes you can wait and wait for amazing vintage Champagne, and then 2 come along at once. Hot on the heels of last week’s Pol Roger Cuvee Winston Churchill 2002 is Dom Perignon’s new release Plenitude 2, 1998.
Below is a write up from the newest memmber of our team, Georgina Crawley, a self-confessed champagne-ophile.
“As many of you know, champagne is one of my passions and after a visit to Dom Perignon to taste vintages going back to 1970 with the wine maker Vincent Chaperon, I am smitten. Therefore, I am really excited about this new release, Dom Perignon Plenitude 2, 1998.
Instead of using “˜Oenotheque’ to describe the late releases, Dom Perignon are changing their terminology and calling these releases “˜Plenitudes’. In keeping with Dom Perignon’s philosophy on extended lees ageing, the Oenotheque wines, released at an optimal moment in their development, generally possess even greater depth, richness and complexity than their straight vintage siblings.
The 1998 is a second release. The second Plenitude is normally released after a minimum of 12 years on the lees and has reached the peak of intensity, giving a beautiful expression of opulence. A magnified version, this is richer without being heavy. Notes of Honeysuckle, orange rind and hints of iodine. Broad, mouth-filling and intense with precise flavours, rich creaminess, brioche and smoke and very long on the finish.
P2-1998 is a black tone on tone bottle, in contrast to the standard gold on green, that looks both serious and minimalist packaged in a sleek brushed aluminium box.”

“The 1998 Dom Perignon P-2 (formerly Oenotheque) is quite reticent today. What else is new? These second -plenitude wines are often very tight when they are first released, which is very much the case here. Still, it is quite evident the 1998 is a bit more tender and pliant than the 1996. Today, the 1998 still hasn’t turned the corner, but it is quite pretty and expressive. This is a terrific offering.”
