A Pair of Pommards

The famous hillsides of the Côte de Beaune have an unparalleled reputation for producing the world’s greatest white wines. But in Beaune’s closest village of Pommard, it is Pinot Noir which is king. The 2017 vintage produced delightful wines in this sector of the Côte de d’Or: precise, poised and eminently drinkable, showing Pinot charm at its very best. This is a vintage which is absolutely hitting its sweet spot now. There are many myths and tales as to why, but due to certain vagaries of the time, the appellation of Pommard was unfairly excluded from having a Grand Cru vineyard. However, its legendary Epeneaux and Epenots vineyards have long been accepted as such in quality and reputation in all but name. We have selected two of the village’s greatest and most historical domaines, highlighting the quality of both the vintage and the appellation in their unique ways.
