When you consider the meticulous care and attention that goes into making Château Cheval Blanc, it is clear to see why it is a peerless First Growth. Pierre Lurton, Manager of Château Cheval Blanc, perfectly sums up what makes this wine so extraordinary:

We have explored some of the factors that make Cheval Blanc so unique below:

Grape variety | Cabernet Franc
This estate makes one of the greatest wines in the world through blending Cabernet Franc. It is an immensely exciting statement and demonstrates just how beguiling wines made from this varietal can be.

Soil Type
Cheval Blanc’s exclusive terroir makes distinguishes it from the rest. While most First Growths grow vines from one or two different soil types, Cheval Blanc boasts a tapestry of 10 individual soils. It sits atop the border of Pomerol and St Emilion where a rich mix of terroirs gives each plot of vines its own character. The results are extremely complex wines that are unique in every vintage.

Vine Age
The average age of vines is 42 years. The team made a decision to replant all the vines that were planted between 1960 and 1982 as during this period the clones used were not of good enough quality and the popular method of grafting at the time (the Omega method) didn’t deliver qualitative results.

Individual Plot Management
The estate has a Burgundian ethos as they work on a ‘plot by plot’ basis. Cheval has 53 different plots, known affectionately as their ‘children’, and all managed separately. The respect for individual plots defines the estate and Pierre-Olivier calls Cheval Blanc "un vin de terroir".

Blending
Blending is of the utmost importance at Cheval Blanc. This is a lengthy four-month process during which they discern the final magic blend that carries the ultimate reflection of the vintage. In this respect, Cheval Blanc is unique as no other estate dedicates as much time on the blending. It is this magic of mixing the three different grape varietals that creates this extraordinary wine, one of such sophistication and power. It has depth of complexity and a spellbinding spectrum of flavours thanks to its rich tapestry of aromatics. Pierre-Oliver identifies this brilliantly: “Making wine is a virtue, it is humility: 80% of the wine is made by what Mother Nature gives us. We are responsible for the other 20%”.

Unique Vintage Character
Pierre-Olivier and Arnaud are proud guardians of the Cheval Blanc DNA. They craft each vintage and “let each bottle tell the story of the vintage”. They are not looking for consistency, but rather striving to harness the characteristics of each vintage while keeping a firm eye on the future. As Pierre-Olivier explained to us, “We always ask ourselves, ‘Are we making the best Cheval Blanc possible?’”. This is an immense task, but one this team can handle.

Design & Environment
In 2011, the famous architect Christian de Portzamparc led the renovation of the estate’s facilities, including a state-of-the-art winery, barrel cellars, vinification room and tasting area, making Cheval Blanc the envy of all other Bordeaux estates.

Legacy
There is no doubting this estate is at the top of its game now, but there is also an exciting future ahead for this great estate and they will continue to make brilliant wines well into the future. This is a stellar team that is finetuning this great estate to make the best wines well into the future. That is one of the true legacies of such a legendary Domaine.

Pricing

  • IN BOND prices exclude UK Duty and VAT. Wines can be purchased In Bond for storage in Private Reserves or another bonded warehouse, or for export to non-EU countries. Duty and VAT must be paid before delivery can take place.

  • RETAIL prices include UK Duty and VAT. Wines for UK delivery can only be purchased this way.

Additional Information

  • Duty Paid wines have been removed from Bond and cannot subsequently be returned to Bond.  VAT is payable on Duty Paid wines. These wines must remain Duty Paid but can be purchased as such for storage subject to VAT.

  • En Primeur wines can only be purchased In Bond. On arrival in the UK these wines can either be stored In Bond in Private Reserves or another bonded warehouse or delivered directly to you. When you decide to take delivery, Duty and VAT at the prevailing rate become payable.

Availability

  • NOW – These wines are available immediately.

  • LATER – These wines are available later. If you buy for delivery, we will contact you on arrival to schedule a delivery date.
    If you buy for storage, your wines will be transferred automatically on arrival.

Tax status

  • IB: In Bond. These wines have had no UK Duty or VAT paid on them. Wines can be purchased In Bond for storage in Private Reserves or another bonded warehouse, or for export to non-EU countries.

  • DP: Duty Paid. Wines for immediate UK delivery must be purchased Duty Paid. VAT is payable on Duty Paid wines. Wines which have been removed from Bond cannot subsequently be returned to Bond. They must remain Duty Paid but can be purchased as such for storage subject to VAT.

  • EP: En Primeur. These wines are lying in the Domaines’ cellars until shipping. They can only be purchased In Bond. On arrival in the UK these wines can either be stored In Bond in Private Reserves or another bonded warehouse or delivered directly to you. When you decide to take delivery, Duty and VAT at the prevailing rate become payable.
