This village blend comes from three different parcels planted by successive generations of the family in 1939, 1950 and 1979, on just under 2 hectares of vineyards. A very deep opaque colour, with aromas of dark wild alpine fruits and a smattering of pepper and spice. Forward in nature with a light tannic feel and soft pleasing finish.

The 2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Grands Liards has a beguiling nose: dark berry fruit, cranberry, hints of iris floor and a light potpourri scent. Wonderful definition. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly powdery tannins at the moment. It offers crisp and vivacious dark berry fruit laced with Earl Grey, gently fanning out towards a refined and cohesive finish. Superb. Drinking Window: 2026-2038.

Goedhuis, December 2023
Situated on the higher slopes of the commune at its boundary for Premiers Crus on the northern side. Renowned for its fruit and flamboyant, open flavours, this is an archetypal Champeaux, with damson and bitter cherry aromas. On the palate it has a flashy opulence, sweet and spiced, with soft tannic creaminess. Charming.

Situated on the northern sector of this great Grand Cru, lying below Cros Parantoux, and an admirable example of this majestic Grand Cru. Cranberry and pomegranate scent, the initial impression is of a wine of extraordinary finesse and grace. As the flavours and weight of textured fruit evolves, it slowly unleashes a powerfully intense core lying beneath. The tannins have a chewy gourmand personality, giving layered breadth. It is immensely persistent on the finish. Stunning.

The 2021 Richebourg Grand Cru is aged with 50% whole bunches in 80% new oak. There is a touch of reduction on the nose, though despite that this seems impressively defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied, more expressive with fine-boned tannins, taut and fresh, quite intense (as you would expect from a Richebourg). I appreciate the manner in which it builds and exerts insistent grip and structure on the finish. Serious.

Paler colour than the Echezeaux with a very expressive nose. 50 whole bunch vinification for both wines. Despite the lighter start there is an enormous weight in the middle, then a gentler finish. Lovely lush strawberry and raspberry fruit with a floral touch. Properly long finish. Drink from 2030-2036.

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru was quite broody on the nose, not as cohesive or as vigorous as the Les Beaumonts. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm structure, more savory than the Les Beaumonts, earthier but just tapering a little toward the finish. Compared to the Malconsorts, this left me wanting more. A riper and less elegant but more complex nose combines notes of black raspberry, cassis, Asian-style tea and a plethora of exotic spice nuances, especially star anise and hoisin. There is excellent mid-palate density to the suave but relatively powerful medium weight plus flavors that possess a highly attractive texture, all wrapped in a caressing, velvety and strikingly long finale. This too is terrific, and it should be a knockout in time. Sweet spot Outstnding. Drink 2031+

This fine vineyard situated above the town of Beaune was one of the Domaine des Héritiers Jadot’s earliest acquisitions of vineyards in the 1830s. Theurons lies in the heart of the Beaune appellation and is considered one of the very finest sites, balancing classically perfumed aromatics with bold fruit. This 2015 is a beautiful example of those characteristics: it is brimming with juicy cherry fruit on the nose. The palate is given structure from some abundant and high-quality tannins. This Pinot has the texture and concentration to stand up very well with food.

The 2015 Beaune 1er Cru Les Theurons was more closed than its Beaune "siblings" and only reluctantly offered scents of undergrowth-tinged red berry fruit, hints of brown spices emerging with time and suggesting a more complex aromatic profile down the line. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, good weight and more sappiness than the Beaune Grèves, if not quite the same degree of detail. Still, this is a commendable 2015 that perhaps just needs to step up its game once in bottle. Drink 2019-2032

Crafted in much the same way as CARO, Petit Caro possesses a little less power than its big brother, with more emphasis on fresh, juicy fruit and earlier drinking. A Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon blend, its nose is an intense medley of blackcurrants, strawberries, dried violets, and a touch of menthol, while the palate is wonderfully textured with refined tannins and complex notes of graphite and coffee bean on the finish. This is an elegant wine that has all the complexity of CARO but without the need for delayed gratification.

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, which took the longest to finish its alcoholic fermentation, has a ripe, opulent bouquet of black cherries, blueberry and cassis aromas, perhaps not displaying the delineation of the previous two vintages. This vineyard is now written in Vosne Romanée folklore following the feats of the great Henri Jayer at the end of the last century. Jayer used to say it wasn’t an easy vineyard to work, but the exceptional rewards were always worth it. This is still absolutely the case in Méo-Camuzet’s expert hands. Dark cassis characters, it is so silky. The powerful tannins are hidden under the mass of fruit and zippy freshness. Totally complete, with everything in place. Sensational. A contender for wine of the vintage.

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux 1er Cru, which I learned takes under an hour to pick, was showing just a little reduction on the nose, which is quite savory compared to the Aux Brûlées; it develops light ferrous notes with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and ebullient red berry fruit suffused with energy before it segues into a structured, almost Richebourg-like finish. As usual, this is a very intellectual Cros Parantoux that will benefit from several years in a lucky cellar. Drink 2025 - 2050

Burghound, January 2021, Score: 93-96
Here the nose is quite reserved yet aggressive swirling helps to liberate the very spicy, cool and perfumed aromas that reflect notes of sandalwood, cassis and raspberry liqueur. The rich, intense and mineral-driven flavors also possess excellent mid-palate volume before concluding in a mouth coating, balanced, youthfully austere, and hugely long finish. This classy and elegant but very solidly structured effort will likely require the better part of two decades before it completely realizes its full development potential. Brilliant. Dont miss! Outstanding. Drink 2036+

This wine produced from Méo’s 0.3ha parcel of Cros Parantoux is exuberant and forward, with lots of lots of ripe cherry fruit and a hint of rose petals. Incredibly deep purple. The nose has class and power, but initially is much more subdued than the Brûlées. The central core of fruit is hugely intense in a fresh raspberry style, quite a lot of oak, more acid than tannins behind, exceptionally persistent. Compared to the Brûlées, Cros Parantoux is more backward in its evolution, thanks to the acidity. My head says that it will probably be the long term winner. Happy the wine-lover who has both. 5 Star

Guidalberto used to be great value for money, and even though it's a bit pricier these days, the quality has also improved dramatically in recent vintages as Tenuta San Guido seeks to remove the idea of Guidalberto as a ‘second wine’ by building a dedicated winemaking facility and adjusting the blend. The 2022 is loaded with herbal and sea breeze scents among bright, tangy berries. In the mouth it is saline and precise, with a succulence to the concentrated plum and black berry core, and a gracefulness to the tannic and acid structures which weave through it. Sapid and incredibly moreish, with a beautifully ripe red berry finish, this really does stand up on its own two feet. Drinking window 2024-2030.

Made with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the Tenuta San Guido 2022 Guidalberto gives you a good taste of the same DNA that brings us one of Italy's greatest wines, Sassicaia, but it's offered in a more immediate style here (thanks to the addition of the Merlot). This warm vintage opens to medium-dark concentration and very plump aromas that take you immediately to blackberry and blackcurrant sitting out in the sun at your local farmers market. The wine shows a soft and gentle side with a pretty level of elegance transmitted through the fruit freshness and the light oak spice that is discernible here but delivered with grace. Drink Date: 2024-2030.

Goedhuis, December 2022
Lying at the top of the Clos just below the Château, in a parcel called “des Papes” reputedly reserved for the Popes of Avignon, the Drouhin Laroze hectare of vines is one of the very best positioned in Clos de Vougeot. Aged 80% in new oak, but with its natural tannic concentration Nicolas decided to destalk all the fruit this year. With coriander and smoky spiced aromatics, this shows off the powerful tension typical of Clos Vougeot. Aloof in style, with muscle and forgiving sweetness of oak at the end. A multi-layered wine.

The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a lively bouquet with quite expressive red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit laced with graphite and light pain d'épices aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, fresh and quite vibrant, a dash of white pepper with a tensile finish. This is very appealing and should age well in bottle. Drink 2025-2048.

Jasper Morris MW, December 2022, Score: 92-95
No whole bunches were used in the Clos, which is as usual. Their plot is very well sited in Plante de l’Abbaye and Quartier du Marei Haut. A concentrated mid red purple, with a suggestion of power behind. Red fruit with a darker edge is prolific on the palate, leading through to light tannins at the finish, with a sense of discreet energy. A well-balanced example. Drink from 2027-2034.

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Craipillot 1er Cru is more backward, less expressive on the nose than the Au Closeau. Light blue fruit permeate the brambly red fruit, with hints of cold black tea and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, elegant and refined. The 2015 was an incredibly successful vintage, blessed with a perfect growing season, resulting in a wine with optimal ripeness while preserving freshness, exceptional intensity, depth and elegance. A true expression of the extreme beauty of their exceptional terroir. This is the most elegant and refined vintage I have seen of this wine. With ultra-refined tannin, the wine is dry, very clean, not minty at all, with very good tension and length, with a chalky, tasty, almost salty finish. Of course, the classical notes of cedar wood, black peppercorns and tobacco are there, but in a very subtle way. Super elegant. Drinking 2017-2027

The 2022 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is blended with 27% whole bunches this year. This has quite a high-toned bouquet, and I felt a slight oxidation on this sample. The medium-bodied palate has quite firm tannins like the Chapelle-Chambertin and plenty of black plum towards the finish. I don't think I will rate this sample.

This fine vineyard lying alongside Bonnes Mares Grand Cru takes its name from the small huts (bodes) that once existed in remote spots in the vineyards. The 2014 Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a corker of a nose: here, a rush of raspberry and Morello cherry infused with limestone and flint aromas. There is enough wood to notice along with a hint of menthol on the markedly earthy red and dark berry fruit aromas where background hints of spice and floral elements are in evidence. The overtly powerful and concentrated broad-shouldered flavors display almost painful intensity before culminating in an explosively long and very firmly structured finish where once again a hint of bitter cherry appears. This is an interesting wine of contrasts as the mid-palate, even with all of its intensity, possesses a caressing palate feel yet the finish is bold, robust and unyielding. As the description confirms, this is going to require a long snooze in a cool cellar. Don't miss 94-97! Drink 2031+

The 2014 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes reveals a pretty bouquet of red plums, blackberries, spring flowers and potpourri. On the palate, it's full-bodied, velvety and layered, with tangy acids, fine-grained but chalky tannins and a deep, concentrated core of fruit. While this has shut down, it isn't as structurally reserved as some of the top 2014s have become. It's an elegant Clos de la Roche in the making. Harvested on September 18, this was one of Ponsot's earliest harvests in recent years: the 2013 Clos de la Roche, for example, was picked on October 9. William Kelley 95/100

Neal Martin, December 2013, Score: 95-97
The 2012 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Malconsorts comes from a small 0.14-hectare of vines planted in 1950. This year it was reduced from three to two and a half barrels. It has a broody, intense but entrancing bouquet with dark plum, raspberry and mineral scents that are beautifully placed. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. There is plenty of intense red and black fruit dialed into this nascent Malconsorts that is almost regimented in style, but with a wonderful linear finish that is compelling. Superb.

Burghound, January 2015, Score: 94
(from a .5 ha parcel; note that in 2012 this was bottled exclusively in magnum where 300 were produced - my predicted range is necessarily based on this format). Like the Charmes this is wonderfully exuberant with an overtly spicy nose of both red and blue pinot fruit, floral elements and a hint of oak. There is good volume and excellent minerality to the well-delineated, powerful and deep medium-bodied flavors that deliver first-rate persistence. Note that the supporting tannins are dense but fine and this will require many years of bottle age to resolve the tannins. As excellent as the description makes this wine sound I had the same niggling concern here that I did with the Suchots, which is to say that the nose may go secondary relatively early and thus predicting when might be the optimal time to open one of these magnums is not easy to predict. My score offers the benefit of the doubt though here too I include a cautionary question mark. Drink 2034+

The 2013 Richebourg Grand Cru has a very expressive bouquet, perhaps more so than the Cros Parantoux at this primordial stage: a mixture of red and black fruit, bay and Earl Grey, later accompanied by rose-petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe red berry fruit intermingling with mint and sage, gradually building to a suave, minerally finish. This is an excellent Richebourg for the vintage, although I would be hedging my bets on the Cros Parantoux this year. Drink: 2018 - 2040

Burghound, January 2015, Score: 94-97
(from a .37 ha parcel in Les Véroilles of 40+ year old vines save for a very tiny parcel in Richebourg proper). In contrast to the relative expressiveness of the Cros Parantoux this is almost mute though aggressive swirling does liberate a beautiful array of violet, spice and plum aromas that are trimmed in gentle sandalwood hints. The imposingly-scaled big-bodied flavors possess a velvety mouth feel thanks to the plethora of dry extract that does a great job of buffering the very firm tannic spine on the stony, detailed and massively long finish. While there is certainly very fine size and weight this is not what I would describe as a huge Méo Riche but everything is in perfect proportion plus the balance is impeccable. As is almost always the case this will not be a good candidate for early consumption so be prepared to buy it and forget it. Drink 2031+

The 2012 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru has a lush, well-defined, sensual bouquet with perfumed boysenberry, black cherry and blueberry scents reminiscent of Bonnes-Mares. The palate is underpinned by fine, tensile tannins and there is a wonderful silver thread of acidity. Quite compact towards the finish, this Griotte has good substance and length, probably deserving of 5-6 year in bottle before broaching. Very fine.

Burghound, January 2015, Score: 92-95
(from a .90 ha parcel). This is notably more aromatically elegant with its pretty nose of extract of red cherry, raspberry, pomegranate and plum where added breadth is present in the form of spice, tea, earth and sandalwood hints. There is that lovely sense of underlying tension present on the medium weight plus flavors that display both stone and soil undertones that continue onto the balanced, classy and stylish finish. This is terrific though despite the refined mouth feel there is a very firm tannic spine that will require plenty of time to fully resolve. Patience required. Drink 2028+

Remarkably soft on the palate for La Landonne, it doesn't have the same austere impact at this stage as a more classic vintage. Tannins are soft, ripe and not as intense as usual, but it does have length and ripe black fruit, with a graphite element to the tannins. Acidity is on the low side, as is the alcohol. The 2022 is rather Pinot Noir-like in its fruit profile, mixing high-toned strawberry and raspberry fruits with some blackberry and blueberry. There are some peppery, garrigue undertones to the succulent fruit which has a sweeping freshness on the palate backed up chalky tannins. 'Corton is cheaper than many premiers crus! The quality has increased recently.' Transparent ruby. Heady nose with great charm. Readable, just a hint of beetroot on the finish but an attractive round fruity drink inside some framework. The nose is the best bit. Drink 2023-2033

Julia Harding, January 2015, Score: 16.5
Savoury dark fruit combined with oaked sweetness. Seems to be a bit smokily reductive too. More reductive on the palate but the freshness and fruit purity is still evident underneath but I fear the oak is a little dominant and may stay that way.

Bright, dark red. Highly expressive tangy scents of cherry, wild strawberry, pomegranate, crushed stone and mint. Superrich, tactile, dense and chewy yet light on its feet. Conveys a powerful sense of dry extract and outstanding clarity and cut to its flavors of raspberry, cherry and minerals. The 2014 version shows riper, blacker fruits while this is more about acidulated wild red berries. Wonderfully silky, smooth wine with outstanding energy and thrust. The wine's powerful fruit blows past its refined tannins on the palate-staining finish. Splendid!
