En Primeur | Burghound Recommends

Although the field of serious Burgundy critics is becoming ever more crowded, Allen Meadows (Burghound) still stands out as the original and the best. So, when he releases his review of a new vintage it is worth sitting up and taking notice. He is positively rapturous, commenting that the 2019 wines are: “Ripe, fresh, concentrated and very high-quality.” If you have not yet dipped a toe in the fabulous Burgundy 2019 pool, now is the moment.

  • Wine Advocate, October 2022, Score: 98

The 2020 Yattarna Chardonnay is an exercise in floral restraint, streamlined power and palate-staining intensity of flavor. The wine undulates over the mouth and through the long and lingering finish. Yattarna is routinely a sophisticated expression of Chardonnay—one of Australia's finest—and the 2020 season is the perfect backdrop for the wine. If you headed into this wine expecting a big, powerful, obvious wine, you would be sorely mistaken. The power is coiled within the folds of phenolics and volumes of fruit in the mouth. Sixty-eight percent of the wine is sourced from Tasmania, the balance from Adelaide Hills; the clonal selection is largely Bernard clones 95 and 96. It is scintillating and composed, elegant and poised, but so seductively concentrated that it sort of forces you to sit back and contemplate it. At 12.5% alcohol, it is weightless; the power undeniable. Drink 2022-2037.

The oak is strongly expressed in this blend of Tasmania and Adelaide Hills chardonnay. Aromas of toasted hazelnut, as well as peach, lemon, grapefruit and wet stones abound. There’s nougat and spiced bread here, too. The palate holds an intense core of ripe-peach, grilled-lemon and nectarine fruit flavor delivered in a mouthwateringly intense mode, with flavors of grapefruit, grilled lemon, toasted nuts and a bracingly fresh, unwavering drive of acidity. One of the finest Premiers Crus in Nuits St Georges, located at the northern end of the village towards Vosne Romanée. • Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 90-92

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Murgers 1er Cru was the most backward on the nose among the domaine’s 2019s, delivering sultry black fruit, loam and touches of damp leaves. The palate is nicely structured, more muscular than the Au Bas de Combe, and displaying fine mineralité, although it needs to develop just a touch more sustain on the aftertaste. It will certainly need 3–4 years in bottle before it shows what it can do. Drink 2023 - 2036

Smoke, tar, licorice, grilled herbs and wild cherries flow from Sesti's 2004 Brunello diMontalcino. This is an especially dense, full-bodied wine that shows off remarkable depth and richness in its endless layers of fruit. The finish is sweet and long. This, too, is another wine that will require patience, but it is a gem. Biodynamic farming and traditional winemaking - with all operations undertaken according the lunar calendar - are at the heart of proprietor Giuseppe Sesti's approach. Based on the beautiful wines I have tasted in recent years, I can only say theresults are striking. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

Another highlight in this range, the 2014 Barolo Ravera opens with the most exquisite, captivating aromatics imaginable. It will be interesting to see if it develops a bit more midpalate depth and pliancy. Today, the 2014 is a bit austere, even within the context of the year and this site, where the wines are a bit on the nervous side to start. I have seen Vietti Raveras blossom into spectacular wines and imagine that will be the case here as well. Readers should not plan on opening a bottle anytime soon. 2026 - 2054

These vines on slopes close to Ladoix in the direction of Nuits St Georges were planted in 1927 and the wine reflects true old vine characteristics. • Neal Martin, 90-92

The 2018 Corton Clos Rognet Grand Cru is deep in color and sports a more opulent and dense bouquet than the Corton-Perrières; the black cherry, cassis and violet aromas are very seductive and generous at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, quite saturated tannins, and sweet and candied in style, offering dark cherries and allspice toward the finish. Fine. 2023 - 2040

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 92-94

A slightly fresher and spicier nose blends nose of plum, cassis, earth and plenty of pretty floral nuances. The opulent yet powerful and focused full-bodied flavors flash evident muscle on the serious, very long and balanced finale as the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is very Corton in character and should age accordingly. Drink 2036+

  • Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 92-94+

The 2018 Corton Grand Cru Clos Rognet is built for the long haul but evidently possesses considerable potential. Mingling aromas of cassis and cherries with notes of bitter rose, spices and truffles, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and introverted, with fine but chalky tannins and lively acids. Méo's two bottlings from the hill of Corton are arguably his most underrated wines, and readers with the patience to forget them for 15 or so years should give them serious consideration.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 92-95

Harvested on the same day whereas Perrières whereas normally Rognet is ready to pick up to a week earlier. Vibrant and exuberant purple, sweet deep red fruit with excellent lift, and a heart-warming long distinguished finish.

Badarina is one of Serralunga’s most precious plots. Decanter calls Grimaldi “the reference producer for this vineyard”. At 450m above sea level, it was traditionally reserved for Dolcetto vines, but the forward-thinking Grimaldis planted Nebbiolo; a sage decision in the face of rising temperatures. The wines from Badarina have linear tension and a tell-tale chalkiness. The 2020 is super, offering sumptuous balsamic and angostura bitter complexities to the crystalline red fruit. Sapid and intensely mineral with a taut backbone that gives the wine such racy energy. We can’t get enough!

A velvety, come-hither style of Clos de Vougeot with none of the wildness found in other Domaines, this is a seductive and delicious style which is so fruit-forward it is bound to drink well young, but the real excitement will come in ten years when it will reveal more depth and power.

Nine barrels instead of 14 usually (but 5 in 2021). Deep purple with brighter rim. Sturdy stuff on the nose with some black fruit. Mulberry and blackberry, certainly on the lusher side, but this is backed by the familiar Clos Vougeot structure and of course the need to wait ten years. But I would not want this any riper.

The palate is medium-bodied with a structured, slightly tough opening. The Urziger spice garden (wurzgarten) is unique in the middle mosel for its red soils rather than slate. These 120 year old vines produce a stunningly floral wine. Lemon colour, it is so floral on the nose with hints of white peach, guava and verbena. A more gracious style than the strict and steely Wehlener. This is a wine which coats the mouth. Beautifully rewarding there is a touch of lychees and lemon sherbet, beautifully vibrant and alive but so graceful and fine and the hint of honeysuckle on the finish gives a sensation of being less firm in its dryness and a feeling of wonderful harmony.

This is the 16th vintage of Elisabeth Salmon in the last 36 years, and it certainly brings with it a wonderful charm and grace. Sourced exclusively from 100% Grands Crus and Premiers Crus parcels, you are greeted by instantly seductive, fruit forward aromas with a mix of wild strawberries and redcurrants. This elegant charm is echoed on the palate, bringing with it layers of brioche and white pepper. You are reminded that there is a backbone of Chardonnay to this blend, which plays a crucial supporting role in providing a refined, chalky texture, leading to a lingering saline finish.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2024, Score: 96

The 2012 Brut Rosé Cuvée Elizabeth Salmon offers up hints of red berry fruit, ginger, spice, rosewater, mint and crushed flowers. There is a feeling of classic austerity that runs through the 2012. I would prefer to cellar this for at least a few years, as it is quite reticent at this stage. Chalk, mint, white pepper and bright saline accents linger on the pointed finish.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2024, Score: 19+

The bottles were superbly clean, amazingly delicate, and resonant, with crystal-clean fraise de bois notes dominating. Not surprisingly, with a Chardonnay-dominant recipe, the finish brings acres of chalk to scour the taste buds with glorious minerality and tension. Both the bottle and magnum have this superb engine on display, and the main difference at this early moment in the magnum’s life is that it appears, although the difference is not as stark as it is in Louis, to have more power pushed forwards on the palate. Both formats are superbly calm and controlled, and a vault of power in the core will send this wine down the line for a good couple of decades. Drink now-2045.

The Sérafins own a third of a hectare of this grand cru across two different parcels: one within Mazoyères Chambertin and the other in Charmes Chambertin. Full of dark summer pudding fruits, this is an opulent, generous style, with rounded ripe layered tannins. A wine of very serious quality indeed.

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 90-92

Once again there is ample sauvage character present on the very ripe aromas of red and black cherry, warm earth and interesting floral hints. The rich, full-bodied and concentrated flavors brim with sappy dry extract while delivering very good if not outstanding persistence on the mildly warm bitter pit fruit finish. This too is currently firm to the point of being chewy so extended patience is strongly suggested. Drink 2035+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 93-96

Almost too dark to merit the imperial purple epithet. The nose shows a wealth of fruit, ripe but not cooked. A wealth of mulberry bilberry and dark raspberry with a slightly dry finish. I think this will come through in time, though it does not currently show the grace of the Cazetiers. Fruit intensity is playing a battle with thick tannins. The former will win.

  • Neal Martin, September 2021, Score: 96

The 2017 Richebourg Grand Cru sports an intense nose of mulberry, dark plum, sous-bois, fern and incense. This is complex and involving, and quite mercurial in the glass. Returning to the wine after 15 minutes, it develops a subtle minty aroma. The palate is velvety-smooth with enormous depth. A little more lush than its peers, it offers extremely pure red cherries, wild strawberry and blood orange toward a dried blood and spicebox-tinged finish that fans out gloriously. Just a wonderful wine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Drink 2027 - 2065

The 2017 Richebourg Grand Cru has a showstopping, persistent bouquet of intense blackberry, sous-bois and crushed stone. The supremely well-balanced palate offers filigreed tannin, wonderful mineralité and an otherworldly-long finish. One of the most elegant Richebourgs that I have tasted. Best Richebourg in show this year? Quite possibly. Six barrels produced. 2023 - 2055

  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 93-96

Here there is no reductive funk as the elegant, airy and beautifully perfumed nose offers up notes of sandalwood, anise, clove, Asian-style tea and plenty of floral influences. There is excellent delineation and minerality to the solidly concentrated, indeed even muscular, large-scaled flavors that culminate in an incredibly long if very, very backward, austere and compact finale. This Zen-like effort is going to require an extended snooze in a cool cellar and as such, it's a wine to buy and forget that you own it for at least a decade. Drink 2037+

  • Decanter, December 2018, Score: 97

For the third vintage in a row, this 0.32ha plot, ranging in age between 60 and 80 years, has produced the best wine at the domaine. It's a stunning grand cru that was deceptively easy to taste from barrel. Elegant, refined and sensuous, it's a soprano of a wine with beautifully pitched chalky precision, a hint of earth and subtle wild strawberry fruit. Drinking Window 2022 - 2032

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 90-93

There is a touch of the sauvage to the ripe aromas of black cherry, cassis, violet and earth. The decidedly fleshy full-bodied flavors possess good power and mid-palate density while displaying very good energy on the firmly structured, serious markedly rustic finale. This is an old school Corton that is clearly built-to-age. Drink: 2033+

  • Wine Advocate, June 2020, Score: 91-93

The 2018 Corton Grand Cru Cuvée du Bourdon is the usual blend of some 60% Les Paulands, 20% Les Perrières and 20% Clos du Roi, and Alexandre Abel told me that he limited the fermentation temperature to a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius to control extraction. Wafting from the glass with notions of cherries, raspberries, potpourri, spices and forest floor, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated, with real energy and excellent structural refinement.

  • Decanter, June 2020, Score: 96

Alexandre Abel co-ferments grapes from the climats of (mostly) Pollands with 20% each of Perrières and Clos du Roi to produce this stylish, nuanced, well-integrated cuvée of Corton. Fine, nuanced and refined, it's a Grand Cru red that whispers rather than shouts with understated wood and savoury floral red berry fruit. The tannins are a delight.

The slightly more humid location of the Valozières vineyard suited the dry summer conditions has resulted in a wine with striking summer pudding aromas. A very pure Pinot style, lively and open, with a bright drive of fruit on the finish. Aloxe is often overlooked as an appellation, which is a great shame as this example shows what fine quality there is to be found.

The 2016 Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Les Valozières offers up lush blueberry and black cherry scents on the nose with a touch of violet, the 20% new oak nicely integrated. The palate is crisp and fresh on the entry with crunchy tannin and tobacco-tinged black fruit that leads to a rather hard finish that needs to smooth down its rough edges. I certainly think that the 2015 suited this vineyard better. Drink 2019-2025

  • Burghound, April 2018, Score: 89-91

An overtly floral nose combines notes of red and dark currant, earth and a whiff of game. The rich and solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors possess the usual muscle of a fine Valozières while delivering fine if not great depth and length on the mildly rustic and youthfully austere finale. Good quality here. Drink 2023+

  • Decanter, January 2018, Score: 89

An incipiently complex nose of cassis, plum, raw cocoa and spicy soil is followed by a medium-full wine with nice depth and length, and a firm core of savoury fruit framed by fine, chalky tannins. This needs some time to come together and fill out, but should be very good. Drink 2026-2036

A distinctly earthy and somewhat somber nose reflects notes of underbrush, forest floor, dark currant and plum. This is a very good Nuits villages that should drink well after a few years of cellaring. Recommended. Outstanding. Drink: 2022+

  • Stephen Tanzer, January 2018, Score: 87-89

Healthy dark red. Deeper-pitched and riper on the nose than the Pommard, offering aromas of redcurrant, smoke and game. A step up in sweetness as well, with redcurrant fruit lifted by a violet quality and complemented by sweet oak. A bit dusty but not dry on the back end.

The 2014 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a clean and very precise bouquet: nicely focused with palpable mineralité even at this early juncture, hints of briary and griottes emerging with time. It is a succinct nose, detailed and not showy at all. The palate has a detailed entry with fine, quite firm tannins. This is linear and precise, a little grainy in texture with a healthy dose of white pepper furnishing the finish. It will need 5-7 years in bottle before it is ready to go. It just does not quite have the depth and body that others have shown. Drink 2020-2038

Aromas of raspberries, cherries and peonies preface the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques, a medium to full-bodied wine with good depth and concentration, its perfumed core of fruit framed by powdery tannins. Rather than emphasizing the more brooding side of this climat, it's a Lavaux St Jacques that—like all of Magnien's wines—emphasizes suppleness and purity of fruit.
