The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Castelgiocondo is an earthy, herbaceous effort with a dark plum/ruby color as well as a sweet bouquet of cherries, compost, underbrush, and Asian spices. Medium-bodied, dry, and angular, with complex aromatics, it is hard to say in what direction this wine will go, but I would opt for drinking it over the next 8-10 years.

Good deep red. Captivating aromas of red fruits, coffee, mocha, violet, minerals and sweet spices. Very rich, dense and creamy, but with excellent lift, focus and energy giving shape and grip to the raspberry, red cherry, botanical herb and mineral flavors. This is a step up in concentration and depth compared to the majority of the 2012 Brunellos. Finishes with fine tannins and superb length. An outstanding vintage in the making for Salicutti.

Caparzo is one of two properties in Montalcino owned by the beautiful and charming Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini. The other property is Altesino. The wine opens to red and purple fruit aromas with background tones of dried herb, potting soil, cedar wood and light spice. Fruit comes from a site with heavier clay soils, and you get hints of that extra density and richness here. This vintage offers all you need in a model Brunello from a very beautiful and generous vintage. I always admire the wines of Caparzo for their accessible and immediate drinking style. Monica Larner.

On the palate, soft textures give way to zesty red berry and mineral tones, as savory spices and fine tannins settle upon the senses, and the 2015 Caparzo gains volume and sweetness in the glass. The finish is long yet fresh, with a blend of acid, fruit, and tannin which leaves a truly balanced impression.

More interesting are the intense and slightly bigger flavors that possess solid mid-palate density along with a reasonable level of dry extract, all wrapped in an overtly austere, rustic and sauvage-inflected finale that is presently very firm and like the old vines Gevrey cuvée is definitely going to require at least some forbearance.

There is outstanding richness and volume to the big, powerful and bold flavors that culminate in a chewy, markedly austere and very firm finish. This is an exercise in harmony and proportion with impeccable balance on the sneaky long finish. 2022+

The 2013 Leoville-Las Cases has perhaps one of the most understated bouquets for this estate in recent years. I do not mean that in a bad sense, after all, this was a vintage whereby it would be foolish to push too much. It gently unfolds with blackberry, bilberry and a light marine influence - iodine, a hint of black olive. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, nicely balanced with a saline note that comes through towards the finish. I appreciate the cohesiveness and refinement of this Leoville-Las Cases, certainly one of the best Médocs of this difficult vintage.

The Grand Vin is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc that includes 9.5% pressed wine and delivers 31hl/ha. It was picked between 2 and 17 October. It has a very classic Léoville Las-Cases bouquet with tobacco-scented black fruit that opens nicely during the time I spend chatting to Jean-Hubert Delon. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity, again, a much more fresh and classic take on Las-Cases reminiscent of 1980s vintages such as the 1983 or 1988. Just add "gentleman's club".

Better than many of the Medoc first-growths, the 2013 Las Cases was harvested relatively late, between October 2 and 17. It is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. Only 40% of the production made it into the grand vin, and the finished alcohol was 13.1%. It reveals a dense ruby/purple color, supple tannins, good texture and depth, excellent freshness and intense dark currant and black cherry fruit notes. While not a blockbuster, it is a medium-bodied, well-endowed 2013 that should drink well for 10-15 years.

With 10% press wine and 85% new oak this is a powerful, dense spicy Las Cases. Pretty good balance but slimmer and more muscular than before. More of a cage fighter than a fencer! There are small flashes of greenness among the cassis fruit which are not off-putting, but they seem to tighten the tannins further making the whole wine seem a bit combative and dry. There is a huge difference in mood between this wine and the lush Clos du Marquis.

Wonderfully lightness of touch here. Very backward wine with all the Cos de Bèze food groups: red fruits, minerals, spices, flowers, crushed stone. The 2007 Giusto dei Notri is a gorgeous, dark beauty endowed with layers of sensual black and blue fruits. Soft, seamless and utterly enveloping, the 2007 Giusto dei Notri impresses for its depth and richness, both of which have been achieved without any excess heaviness. Today the oak is rather pronounced and the wine needs further time in bottle for its full range of aromas and flavors to emerge, but make no mistake, this is a terrific and highly enjoyable wine. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. This is a gorgeous set of new wines from Tua Rita. Perhaps the best news for consumers is there is very little qualitative difference between the estate’s more modestly-priced wines and the high-end bottlings, something that is typical of quite a few properties in Maremma in 2007. Thierry struck gold with his 2007 Clos des Lambrays. Really juicy with plump, soft fruit, zesty spice and mouthfilling tender tannins. Despite its apparent richness, it remains light to the touch and long on the finish. Superbly appealing.

There is a combined hint of a floral and vegetal component, which is probably a residual effect of the significant percentage of whole cluster in the vinification. Otherwise the nose is composed of pure and elegant red berry fruit aromas liberally laced with stone and earth notes that can also be found on the richer and bigger flavors though it would be fair to say that the '07 Lambrays is a wine of finesse and delicacy rather than concentration and power. In sum, this is pretty rather than deep and while I doubt that it will ever be a charmer, it should offer very good to excellent quality in time. Drink: 2017+.Notes: produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 45 years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 20+ years of age.

90% Sauvignon Blanc leads the way here with Sauvignon Gris and Sémillon in tow. The wine has a less overtly herbaceous nose compared to its Pessac compatriots, instead opting for riper tones of nectarines and grapefruit, while there is a lovely lift of white blossom that keeps it feeling delicate. The concentration of fruit is reflected on the palate as the white stone fruit profile is enriched further by new oak nuances before finishing with a high-spirited, high-toned enthusiasm. A highlight of the whites this year.

The 2023 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc was picked from August 23 to September 9 at 36hL/ha and matured in 50% new oak. It has a reticent bouquet at first, requiring a few swirls of the glass to reveal touches of orange pith, peach skin, wild fennel and light pressed white flower scents. The palate is very well balanced with a lovely creamy texture, counterbalanced by the taut line of acidity. Very poised and focused, it's somehow almost Corton-Charlemagne-inspired on the finish (perhaps due to the umami). This is a seriously fine white Pessac-Léognan. Drink 2028-2048.

The 2023 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is quite the extrovert. Apricot, passion fruit, mint, tangerine peel and pineapple all soar out of the glass. Medium in body, with gorgeous texture, the 2023 is quite showy. I imagine it will drink well with minimal cellaring. Drink 2026-2037.

Aromas of white fruits, crisp orchard fruits, spices, smoke, spring flowers and pear introduce the 2023 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, layered and textured wine with a fleshy core of fruit and racy acids, concluding with a mineral, fresh and long finish highlighted by delicate notes of thyme and garrigue. Comprising 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sémillon and 5% Sauvignon Gris and matured in 50% new oak, this blend is among the finest white wines produced at this address.

Another exceptional vintage for Smith-Haut-Lafite Blanc. It’s so complex and structured, offering a palate that feels similar to the texture of a red wine with a velvety tannin structure. There’s a lot going on here. Spice, crushed seashell and citrus blossom. Salty, too. Weightless and so long. 90% sauvignon blanc, 5% sauvignon gris and 5% semillon.
