En Primeur | Burghound Recommends

Although the field of serious Burgundy critics is becoming ever more crowded, Allen Meadows (Burghound) still stands out as the original and the best. So, when he releases his review of a new vintage it is worth sitting up and taking notice. He is positively rapturous, commenting that the 2019 wines are: “Ripe, fresh, concentrated and very high-quality.” If you have not yet dipped a toe in the fabulous Burgundy 2019 pool, now is the moment.

Lying at the top of the Clos just below the Château, in a parcel called “des Papes” reputedly reserved for the Popes of Avignon, the Drouhin Laroze hectare of vines is one of the very best positioned in Clos de Vougeot. The quality found here supports 80% new oak élevage. With the Clos’ natural power in abundance, he destalks the fruit 100%, giving a deep and full style that highlights the warm black fruit characters, rich and luscious, with a strong tannic structure and great length. Superb quality.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 95-97

The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a refined bouquet that blossoms in the glass with very fine delineation and purity of fruit. The medium-bodied palate with fine tannins, well-judged acidity, and crisp fruit shows more brightness on the finish than other cuvées. This is one of Drouhin-Laroze's best wines in 2022. Drinking Window: 2027-2049.

This cuvée comes from three separate lieux-dits on the lower slopes of Morey St Denis:, Aux Cheseaux, Clos des Ormes and Les Crais. As such it is a quintessentially representative style of the appellation. Brick red in colour, fresh red cherries a touch of cinnamon and Pinot vibrance. Gentle and sweet, with appealingly rounded tannins, Chantal has bottled the 2021 a little earlier to capture all this delicious fruit.

  • Goedhuis, May 2016

This great Grand Cru requires little introduction. It jumps out of the glass at you with its lively summer pudding aromas. In the palate, this is bold and broad. A wine with layers and layers of flavours, dark wild fruits, hints of toffee and liquorice and nutmeg. It is mouth coating and concentrated, without excess. A great Clos de la Roche in the making.

  • Neal Martin, December 2015, Score: 95-97

The 2014 Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a corker of a nose: here, a rush of raspberry and Morello cherry infused with limestone and flint aromas. The palate is stately, regal, with filigree tannin and a beguiling sense of symmetry. It bides its time in the mouth before fanning out with effortless ease. This is a fabulous, vivacious Clos de la Roche. Drink 2018-2045

  • Burghound, January 2016, Score: 94-97

There is enough wood to notice along with a hint of menthol on the markedly earthy red and dark berry fruit aromas where background hints of spice and floral elements are in evidence. The overtly powerful and concentrated broad-shouldered flavors display almost painful intensity before culminating in an explosively long and very firmly structured finish where once again a hint of bitter cherry appears. This is an interesting wine of contrasts as the mid-palate, even with all of its intensity, possesses a caressing palate feel yet the finish is bold, robust and unyielding. As the description confirms, this is going to require a long snooze in a cool cellar. Don't miss 94-97! Drink 2031+

  • Wine Advocate, October 2018, Score: 95

The 2014 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes reveals a pretty bouquet of red plums, blackberries, spring flowers and potpourri. On the palate, it's full-bodied, velvety and layered, with tangy acids, fine-grained but chalky tannins and a deep, concentrated core of fruit. While this has shut down, it isn't as structurally reserved as some of the top 2014s have become. It's an elegant Clos de la Roche in the making. Harvested on September 18, this was one of Ponsot's earliest harvests in recent years: the 2013 Clos de la Roche, for example, was picked on October 9. William Kelley 95/100

The 2018 Le Corton Grand Cru comes from an east-facing vineyard on clayey soils over limestone at 300m altitude. It has a fresh raspberry and cranberry bouquet with touches of rose petal and orange peel. The palate offers a pleasant bitter cherry note on the entry, which leads to a finely structured, gently grippy midpalate and a commendable, nicely proportioned finish that is fresh and quite long. This is certainly worth seeking out.

This fine vineyard lying alongside Bonnes Mares Grand Cru takes its name from the small huts (bodes) that once existed in remote spots in the vineyards. Often a bolder style of Chambolle, resembling Morey or Gevrey, in 2020 this superb example combines the best of all three appellations. Intense summer pudding fruit flavours, it has a plump ripeness showing the silky richness of Chambolle, underpinned by full, rounded tannins. Fabulous breadth and great length.

This is a much more intense and powerful Chambolle than many and this follows the Sérafin model and it is darker and more muscular, too. Please be aware of this before you take the plunge, but this is a splendid wine in terms of the structure and integrity of the fruit.

(for inveterate map readers, Clos des Corvées Pagets is situated within Clos des Corvées). There is excellent complexity to the blend of plum, earth, soft spice and game hints. There is very good richness and volume to the sleekly muscular middle weight flavors that possess just enough minerality to notice, all wrapped in a balanced and velvety finish that is supported by moderately firm tannins. This should also drink well young but reward up to a decade of bottle aging. Drink 2021+

(bottled the day before my visit; vinified with 90% whole clusters and aged in 50% new oak): Dark red-ruby. Very ripe but sappy aromas of red cherry liqueur and smoky oak. Full, broad, dense and fine-grained, with its sweetness nicely restrained by savory minerality. Carrying a good bit of baby fat but this premier cru is extremely unevolved today. The pliant, saline finish shows terrific tannin management. The crop level was just 20 hectoliters per hectare, noted Groffier, who told me he made 40 in 2016 as the vines were not affected by frost. 91/100 2021/2029

Corbeaux means curved hollow in old French and this vineyard lies in a small dip beside Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru. It is renowned for making charming, approachable wines, and the Serafins have 0.45 hectares in a walled vineyard. There is enough reduction present to push the underlying fruit to the background. Otherwise there is a lovely texture to the sleek, intense and well-detailed medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a linear, firm and markedly compact finale. A cool, restrained and equally elegant nose is overtly floral with its ripe aromas of dark berry liqueur, earth and pretty spice elements. The venerable old vines are very much in evidence thanks to the seemingly endless reserves of sappy dry extract that confer a highly seductive texture in addition to buffering the exceptionally firm, compact and tightly wound bitter pit fruit-inflected finale that just goes on and on. This superb effort is consistently Rossignol's finest wine and so it is again in 2020. If you can find it, buy it though note well that it is likely to mature glacially. Don't miss! Outstanding. Of course, Michel Chapoutier produces some very limited spectacular dessert wines. The 2005 Ermitage Vin de Paille has a dark amber color, much more noticeable acidity than the 2004, but tastes as unctuous, yet with considerable precision. The truffle notes are not nearly as intense, but the wine does exhibit plenty of honeysuckle, caramel, and marmalade notes in a full-bodied, sweet style. This wine cuvee has between 100 and 159 grams of residual sugar, and the finished alcohol is approximately 15%.

A sublimely layered nose combines a variety of red berry aromas with those of spice, earth and a hint of leather. This too is very good and worth considering.

The Latricières vineyard is known for retaining moisture well during the summer months and delivering its best wines in warmer years. This has served it well in 2019. Characterised by an ample silky richness, this is one of the more elegant and ethereal of the Chambertin Grands Crus.

The 2019 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet of tertiary black fruit, black olive and a touch of Japanese nori. The palate is medium-bodied and well balanced, delivering crisp tannins that gently grip the mouth. It is conservative, like most Latricières, and almost Morey-like in style, with a lightly peppered finish. It will need 4–5 years in bottle. Drink 2023 - 2038

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2020, Score: 93-95

Medium deep red purple, the nose takes coaxing, reticent at first, but there is clearly volume behind. The grapes come across as riper after the range of Savigny 1ers Crus, though there is still no real sign of heat, just a heavier texture. I would love to see this wine in a line up with other Latricières. 3 stars

  • Goedhuis, April 2023, Score: 97-98

Josephine Duffau-Lagarrosse and her new business partner Prisca Courtin-Clarins are fast becoming the St Emilion dream team at this astonishingly positioned 6.8 hectare classified growth. In only their second vintage as partners, the 2022 is an astonishing success. 69% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Franc show the strength of the limestone soils. Dark opaque colour, wild forest and plum fruits, nutmeg, oriental spice with a delicate seam of vanilla oak. Rich and creamy, it gives the palate an amazing expression of both red and black fruits, generously exuberant, with silky tannins all held in position by a limestone mineral edge. Heavenly!

The 2022 Beauséjour has a gorgeous bouquet with pure redcurrant, raspberry and wild strawberry fruit scents. Hints of pencil shavings and orange sorbet emerge in the background. It’s very harmonious and the oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, fresh and vibrant with crisp acidity. This is a more intense Beauséjour under Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse, yet it retains delineation from start to finish, with the tongue tingling on the aftertaste. Exchanging the wine between two glasses really brings out the true character of this fabulous Saint-Émilion that is going to give a lot of pleasure. Chapeau Joséphine Duffau!

  • Neal Martin, April 2023, Score: 95-97

The 2022 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse was picked on 6-9 September for the Merlot and 23 for the Cabernet Franc, representing the highest percentage to date. It was cropped at 42hL/ha with 14.9% alcohol and a pH of 3.5. Aged in 68% new oak, it has a delicate nose that completely disguises that summer's warmth. Precise redcurrant and raspberry fruit aromas are laced with minerals. The limestone soils percolate and evince the estate's style under Joséphine Duffau Lagarrosse. It seems to deepen, to "stretch out" with aeration, manifesting more darker fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, mineral-driven and almost pastille-like in terms of purity with its mélange of red and blue fruit and granular texture. Background notes of tobacco and black truffle begin to surface with time. There's just a trace of white pepper on the finish. Precise, focused and with plenty of substance, this is a characterful and intellectually satisfying Duffau. Most importantly, not only will it be flippin' delicious, but you get the sense that Joséphine is only just getting started. Drink 2030-2065

  • Antonio Galloni, January 2025, Score: 98

The 2022 Beauséjour is fabulous. I find it better from bottle than it was in barrel. Explosive aromatics from the Franc make a strong first impression. Bright acids drive through a core of dark red fruit, blood orange, spice, new leather and espresso. All the elements meld together seamlessly. What a vivid and gorgeous wine this is. I especially admire the long, saline finish. This is a superb effort from the team led by Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2023, Score: 94-97

The 2022 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse is an elegant, supremely polished wine. It is also an infant, and yet the pedigree is easy to see. Bright red/purplish fruit, rose petal, mint, chalk and white pepper lend aromatic brilliance to this understated, classy Saint-Émilion. Clean saline notes extend the finish effortlessly. I can't wait to taste this from bottle. Drink 2030-2052.

  • Wine Advocate, April 2023, Score: 95-97+

The 2022 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) promises to be the finest wine that this superb limestone terroir has produced in at least several decades. In recent years, the quality of the site always shone through, but it was sometimes obscured by an impactful vinification and élevage (plenty of creamy new oak and malolactic fermentation in barrel). Much of the estate's Cabernet Franc was frequently eliminated from the blend. Joséphine Duffau Lagarrosse has changed that, incorporating fully 31% Cabernet Franc in the blend to deliver a complex and compelling wine evocative of wild berries, plums, rose petals and violets. Medium to full-bodied, pure and vibrant, it's supple and layered, with beautifully refined tannins, terrific depth at the core and a long, chalky finish.

  • James Suckling, April 2023, Score: 97-98

A beautiful and enticing red with blackberry, hazelnut, dried flower, spice and berry character. It’s full yet poised with finesse and richness while also being bright and energetic. Precise.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 19.5+

Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse could not hide her excitement when she presented this wine to me, and I could immediately see why. Unlike hosts of properties on both sides of the river, there was no hydric stress whatsoever in Joséphine’s dramatically positioned, limestone-soaked vineyards. The resulting wine has the most significant Cabernet Franc percentage ever at Beauséjour. With a heavenly nose and a thrilling palate, this wine prompts complete and utter elation almost immediately, and the finish is so long, keen-edged and gripping it sets this dramatic wine aside from all others. The floral overture starts with violet and peony delicacy, and this builds incrementally through the luscious, wild, berry and saline-soaked palate and onto the insanely refreshing finish. The image that came to mind when I tasted this wine was of a tightrope walker. Not a slackline walker with a pole – this would be too easy. Joséphine has managed to navigate a high-tensile steel line with no assistance whatsoever – the most difficult of all balancing acts. In 2022, she and her wine made it to the other side without missing a beat. Returning to the wine, the perfume is one of the most delicate and profound on the Right Bank. The flavour continues unabated with no diminuendo, staying with you, complete and flawless until you take another sip. Invigorating, intellectually pleasing, absurdly accurate and hear-achingly delicious, this is a nearperfect and timeless creation, and it could only ever come from this historic property perched high on Saint-Emilion’s limestone plateau.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, April 2023, Score: 96-98+

The 2022 Château Beauséjour (Duffau-Lagarrosse) looks to be another brilliant wine from this incredible terroir located just outside the village of Saint-Emilion. Based on 69% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Franc resting in 68% new oak, it sports a dense purple hue as well as a floral, intense bouquet of cassis, liquid violets, black cherries, truffly earth, and graphite. Hitting 14.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.5, it's full-bodied and has a pure, layered, opulent mouthfeel and just about perfect tannins. There's a little bit more clay in the soils at this estate (there's still plenty of limestone) which gives the wines plenty of power and richness, and the 2022 holds onto a beautiful sense of elegance.

  • Jane Anson, April 2023, Score: 98-100

Just so good, so much uplift, direction and power, with vivid violet reflections to the ruby coloured fruit. Intense and concentrated on the opening, then a soaring limestone juice comes in through the mid palate, with the whole thing showing precision and character. A jumbled, joyful mix of blueberry, cassis, peony, roses, pummice stone and slate limestone, cocoa bean and coffee, showing real depth and seduction. This is always one of the wines that for me most leans in to the character of limestone, and you really feel the full impact in this hot year. Old vines 45 years average. Stopped all punch down during fermentation, now only soft pumpovers and infusion. Axel Marchal and Julien Viaud consultants. Highest Cabernet Franc percentage in the estate's history, and a full 40hl/h yield, 3.5ph. Potential 100.

Much more savoury than the 2017. The nose has a smoky flint and green-wood-spice notes, it seems a touch saline almost. With meat and mint hints behind and coolly wild strawberry notes underlying it all. The palate starts very lean, but is nicely evolving. It’s in an awkward place at the moment between maturing fruit stages, but ripe without the sweetness. Fresh crunchy acidity, with grippy integrated ripe tannins. This is very good but in that “teen phase” means it still needs time. Finishes minty

  • Goedhuis, December 2015

This 100% whole bunch Grand Cru is a jewel in the Morey St Denis crown. It has a wonderfully sophisticated wild strawberry scent, with hints of fresh spice. In the mouth there are appealingly fine-grained tannins, with good Pinot sweetness and a long layered finish, showing all the hallmarks of this great terroir.

  • Neal Martin, December 2015, Score: 93-95

The 2014 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is matured in 50% new oak and is 100% whole bunch fruit. It is blessed with a winsome bouquet. As usual, there is something very natural, unimposing and refined on the nose: blackberry and briary, a hint of graphite, a subtle leafiness maybe, and yet delineated and very pure. The palate is lively and energetic with crisp tannin, black rather than red fruit, linear and very classic in style with what you might call a "cool" marine-influenced finish that has fine salinity. What a great Clos des Lambrays that will put a smile on the face of those that adore refined Burgundy. Drink 2017-2040

  • Burghound, January 2017, Score: 94

A notably spicy, fresh, cool and floral nose displays mostly red berry fruit scents that are trimmed in discreet earth notes. There is excellent cut and definition to the nicely rich and attractively textured flavors that culminate in a presently austere finale though I doubt that austerity will persist. This is a relatively fine and forward vintage for Clos des Lambrays and one that should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years of bottle age. In a word, marvelous. Drink 2026+

Good bright red with a healthy, concentrated red fruit nose overlaid by a lick of oak. This is pleasingly concentrated on the palate, deep red fruit rather than black, plenty of oak but judiciously integrated. Balanced and stylish with medium density – what this vintage is all about

  • Sarah Marsh, December 2015, Score: 19

Rich and compact on the nose. Spices…ah wonderful somewhat exotic spices. The palate is rounded and juicy and supple - but so subtle. It is refined. Silky textured, it glides with some finesses. Not explosive wine; gentle and very long. “I am very happy with the style we are now making with the Clos. It is both refined and expressive….” says Thierry. Drink from 2020
