The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Clos de l’Orme, matured in 50% new oak, has an elegant, expressive bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry and sous-bois aromas. Here there is no reductive funk with its expressive and high-toned nose of essence of red cherry, raspberry and a whiff of herbal tea. The cool, sleek and detailed flavors possess a lacy texture before culminating in a seductive, stony and youthfully austere finale. This is, at least today, the best of the Cathiard villages level wines and a wine that should ample repay mid-term cellaring. Drink 2024+

The 2017 Chambolle Musigny Clos de l'Orme wafts from the glass with aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries, pomegranate and rose petals, deftly framed with a judicious touch of new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with superb concentration and a fleshy but crystalline core of fruit that's striking for its purity and lift, concluding with a long finish.

The 2015 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has an open red cherry, crushed strawberry and sea spray-scented bouquet that perhaps does not quite have the complexity, nor the intrigue of the Mazis-Chambertin at this stage. The palate is refined with grippy tannin and a commendable sense of energy and tension. The salinity comes through on the finish and lends this grand cru fine sappiness, urging you back for another sip. For those with patience... Drink 2020-2045

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Clos de l'Orme, raised in 50% new oak, has a slightly more backward bouquet than the Nuits Saint Georges Villages, even though the malolactic finished a little earlier. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, slightly grainy tannin. There is a slight reduction here, but it dissipates and there is wonderful freshness and precision here. Superb, especially for a "mere" village cru. Drink 2018-2030

A perfumed, airy and elegant nose features the essence of red cherry, floral and soft spice-scented aromas. The lilting and wonderfully refined flavors dance across the middle weight flavors that terminate in a complex, balanced and dusty finale where a hint of bitter cherry arises. This beautiful effort is textbook Chambolle and highly recommended. Outstanding. Top value. (89-92)/2022+

The cooler of Cathiard’s two Nuits premiers crus, the 2016 is vibrant and fresh, with extremely pretty aromas combined with some dense red fruit concentration on the palate. Sébastien has reduced the amount of new oak from previous years, and 55% here helps support the fruit without masking it.

Around 25% of the production was lost because of frost with respect to Cathiard’s 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey. It has an extremely floral bouquet loaded with crushed violets, so Vosne-Romanée like in style. Very ostentatious! The palate is medium-bodied with black cherries and blueberry fruit, strict tannin underneath that segue into with a sustained, peppery and quite penetrating finish. Maybe the showiest of Sebastien's wines from barrel, but you know that this is going to give so much joy once in bottle. Drink 2021-2035

Burghound, January 2018, Score: 90-92
A subtly spiced array speaks of ultra-fresh aromas of dark currant, violet, plum and soft earth wisps. The mid-palate of the middle weight flavors is deceptively pliant because as the lingering and lightly stony and rustic finish sits on the palate the supporting tannins become more evident. I very much like the depth and persistence though note that this will require a few years of aging. Drink: 2024+

The Nuits Aux Thorey is one of the Domaine’s emblematic wines, and the 2016 is lovely and already very well integrated. Aromas of creamy cherry, cassis, rich soil, truffle and spice precede a full-bodied, fine-grained wine, its firm Nuits tannins beautifully cloaked in juicy fruit and only asserting themselves on the long, racy finish. This great Grand Cru was a favourite of the monks of Cluny in the early days of classification and tasting this high-class wine it isn’t difficult to see why. This is an exceptional cuvée full of vigour and drive. So many flavours of dark spice, cocoa and a central kernel of sweetly intense black fruits. Not just a fruit bomb, it has a layered texture and a classic Gevrey minerality. So long and so much potential and very much one of the finest of the vintage

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a southern orientation, but Mathilde Grivot was surprised that it only reached 13.0° alcohol; this was due, she believes, to the rain before the harvest. It takes a little time to cohere in the glass. After a couple of minutes, it offers lovely red and black fruit intermingling with black truffle and damp earthy/woodland aromas, delicate and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, precise and focused. Not a Aux Brûlées of substance and density, but rather one of precision and focus. Excellent. 2023 - 2050

The Geantets have a generous 0.45-hectare slice of this great Grand Cru, lying right next to Griotte Chambertin, and this is their flagship wine. Profound aromatics of damson, sloe and tayberry. The initial impression is of great charm, with a sweet, succulent character, but what follows is all power and intent. There is a great breadth, weight and noticeably concentrated dark black fruit flavours and graphite. Grand Cru complexity, profound and persistent.

While this is a classier wine than the rest, and it is also a few degrees deeper and longer, it is hard to step up to £1240, given this is twice the price of En Champs. Having said this, if you have deep pockets, this is certainly the finest wine in the line-up, and it has the double-benefit of tasting sensational already but will undoubtedly hold for well over a decade with ease.

This great Grand Cru was a favourite of the monks of Cluny in the early days of classification. The Drouhin Laroze 1.5 hectares are particularly important; planted in 1949 they are over 70 years old and produce fruit of exceptional quality and intensity. Cypress tree and pine kernel scent, rich with wild Black Forest fruits. Full bodied and richly layered, this has a beautifully earthy textured character from the iron rich soil of the vineyard. The tannins have an earthy intensity, there is so much going on here and no doubting its Grand Cru status.

No whole bunches were used in the Clos, which is as usual. Their plot is very well sited in Plante de l’Abbaye and Quartier du Marei Haut. Red fruit with a darker edge is prolific on the palate, leading through to light tannins at the finish, with a sense of discreet energy. A well-balanced example. Drink from 2027-2034.

An expressive aromatic palate to begin with. Rich fruit upfront and then it battens down and becomes tight. It has quite a lot of grip to the end of the palate. Les Suchots is wedged between the two great blocks of Grands Crus in Vosne Romanée and Flagey Echézeaux. A background dollop of wood easily allows the exotically spicy aromas of violet, lavender, black cherry, plum and hoisin to be appreciated. The 2023 Clarke has a concentrated bouquet with blackberries, cassis and light violet scents, quite Saint-Julien in style and nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins and a commendable line of acidity. It doesn't quite kick on to a higher level on the finish, so in that sense, it feels a bit conservative. But, it is still a well-crafted Listrac that should allow up to 15 years of drinking pleasure. Drink 2027-2040.

The 2023 Clarke is a powerful, authoritative wine, as it so often is. A blast of dark cherry, scorched earth, licorice, incense, tobacco, gravel and charcoal hits the palate. This brooding Listrac hits all the right notes. The 2023 is impressive and promising. Let’s see if the tannins soften a touch with élevage. Drink 2027-2043.

Goedhuis Waddesdon, April 2024, Score: 89-91
Unusually for the left bank, Merlot forms the backbone of this wine, providing aromas of ripe red and black plums, while there are also hints of strawberries and pencil shavings. This is a brawny wine that will need time to soften up, but there is a nice red berry sweetness in its youth. Drink 2027-2038.

Fresh and ripe, this medium-bodied 2006 displays pretty and aromatic notes of sweet red cherry, black berry and plum - between perfectly ripe Grenache and Pinot Noir. The tannins are supple yet do add a bit of weight suggesting some ageability. A delicious entry level wine that delivers more than its price would suggest.

The Maréchaudes vineyard sits just below Corton Bressandes. This wine is always very expressive in its youth, and 2022 is no exception: the depth and richness of fruit allowed Claude to use a little more new oak this year during the élevage, enhancing the wine’s generosity. There is power, depth and great persistence on the finish thanks to the combination of iron oxide and clay soils. Superb.

The 2022 Corton Les Maréchaudes Grand Cru perhaps reveals the whole bunches more than other cuvées, with the most transparent and ephemeral red cherry and raspberry fruit scents. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very harmonious and smooth. This is a more elegant, refined Corton Grand Cru that should drink after just three or four years. Drinking Window: 2026-2042.

Racked last week. Mid crimson purple in colour. The bouquet is quite expressive despite the recent racking, both strawberries and raspberries, perhaps a little dissociated at the moment, with an elegance though and a fine lifted finish. A little iron rich note in the middle. This is likely to gain in coherence from here and the finish is certainly both fine and persistent. Drink from 2029-2038.

The 2022 Corton Les Maréchaudes Grand Cru has turned out especially well, retaining a cooler feel in this warmer vintage. Offering up aromas of plums and cherries mingled with tones of peonies, licorice and rose petals, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a deep, vibrant core of fruit and a polished, harmonious profile.

Pungent and decidedly ripe aromas of wood toast, black cherry liqueur and a plethora of spice elements introduces round, rich and succulent medium weight plus flavors that also conclude in a firm, moderately grippy and slightly warm finale. While the description admittedly does not sound promising, this may well come together if allowed at least a few years of cellaring to begin to round out the tannic spine as there is good underlying material. The core of the fruit for this excellent village cuvée comes from 50 year old vines planted on a limestone and clay bedrock. A plump and juicy wine, with a herbal and spiced scent, the aged vines provide a defining central structure, whilst the tannins are silky and genteel in nature. A long, juicy sweet finish completes this excellent cuvée.

Pass the grandeur of Ch Montrose and immediately next door is the charmingly humble property of Ch Meyney – you will be instantly struck by how special its terroir must also be. One of our “value buys” of the vintage. Shining purple colour, with open aromas of dark hedgerow fruits, this is plush, polished and luscious. The tannins are very ripe and rounded, and it has a lovely warming sensation on the finish.

The 2018 Meyney is very closed and backward on the nose, possibly due to the oak becoming more prominent at this stage during its élevage. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, fresh in the mouth with a linear, tobacco and graphite tinged finish. All the component parts are here, but its very tight and I am sure it will need several years in bottle. Could this be the best value in the appellation this year? I'll leave it to tussle out with Lafon-Rochet.

The 2018 Meyney is powerful, dense and super-expressive. Gravel, game, scorched earth, smoke, licorice, incense and spice infuse this potent, virile Saint-Estèphe. As big as a Chambertin with the intensity and sheer flavor authority to match. Sumptuously, even lavishly oaked yet it carries its oak as though it were nothing and there is no doubt that this will absorb the wood completely as there is a mind boggling amount of mid-palate sap and punch and it completely coats the mouth and the persistence is exemplary. The structure is completely buried beneath all the sap and while this should be approachable after a decade, it will drink well for another two. Another great Roty Charmes in a very long line of them. If you can find a few bottles, don't miss them. In short, this is very classy juice.
