En Primeur | Burghound Recommends

Although the field of serious Burgundy critics is becoming ever more crowded, Allen Meadows (Burghound) still stands out as the original and the best. So, when he releases his review of a new vintage it is worth sitting up and taking notice. He is positively rapturous, commenting that the 2019 wines are: “Ripe, fresh, concentrated and very high-quality.” If you have not yet dipped a toe in the fabulous Burgundy 2019 pool, now is the moment.

There is no better feeling than unearthing a little-known gem that significantly over-delivers on quality and sheer deliciousness in the glass. That’s exactly the sensation this wine imparted when we discovered it recently. Although not yet classified as a Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru), all of the fruit for this ‘Village’ wine comes from a Grosses Gewächs vineyard – this is a Grand Cru in all but name. An ultimate perfectionist, Ernst Loosen won’t designate this wine as a Grosses Gewächs until the vines have reached the age that he considers necessary at this quality level. So, for the next five years, the Graacher Village will continue to fly under the radar and deliver exceptional value for money. Packed with bright lemon and Granny Smith apple notes on the nose, the palate is dense and concentrated with flavours of pithy citrus fruit and fuzzy apricots. Fresh, crystalline acidity and a hint of saline minerality keeps everything in balance, leading to a poised, refined finish.

47% Grenache, 43% Shiraz, with a drop of Mataro, it comes as little surprise to know that the 138 draws inspiration from the wines of Southern Rhône. The exceptional 2022 vintage has helped produce a GSM that is plush and vibrant, with wild strawberries and blackcurrants coming to the fore. There is a delightful hint of spice and black olive too, while the palate is creamy and loaded with flavour. Elevated to ‘Bin’ status in 1998, the latest release is an aromatic and approachable blend.

  • Wine Advocate, July 2022, Score: 93

A blend of 65% Syrah, 29% Grenache and 6% Mataro, the 2020 Bin 138 Shiraz-Grenache-Mataro is aromatically spicy and exciting, with peppered raspberry, star anise, strawberry and humbug through the finish. It's a really lovely, supple, delicious wine. There is polish and shape here. Early-ish drinking recommended to capture the vivacity and life of the fruit. Drink 2022 – 2029.

  • Vinous, July 2022, Score: 93

Vivid ruby. Floral-accented aromas of dark berries and cherry cola, plus a spicy topnote and a hint of smokiness. Juicy, expressive and open-knit blackberry, candied plum and kirsch flavors, along with a discreet touch of cracked pepper. Velvety and approachable, given some air, delivering a smooth blend of power and vivacity and finishing with fine clarity and gentle tannic grip. All large French oak barrels, 12.5% of them new. Drink 2024-2033.

From one of Burgundy’s great names comes a refined and expressive Moulin-à-Vent. This has AF Gros’ hallmark elegance, and is beautifully translated here, with fine-grained tannins, vibrant red fruit and a subtle mineral edge. There’s no carbonic maceration from this vintage, resulting in a wine of depth, focus, charm and remarkable value.

The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Piaggione is one of the most sensual wines of the vintage. Racy, open-knit and expressive, the 2011 will thrill Salicutti fans who are looking for a wine to drink young. Silky tannins wrap around the succulent fruit and add t the wine's total sense of allure. The warmth of the vintage comes through, yet the wine is never heavy or ponderous. Sweet macerated cherries, cinnamon and rose petal meld into the sumptuous, inviting finish. A wine of weightless elegance, the 2011 is superb. It's hard to imagine the Riserva will be better than this.

The jewel in Tortochot’s crown; almost 0.5 hectares of Gevrey’s greatest Grand Cru at one of the highest locations within the vineyard. A combination of red and dark cherry, the 100% new oak, wafts across with nuances of sweet spice and mocha. The volume of fruit is soothing, giving a lovely profile of ripeness and plucky sweetness. Its overall body consumes the tannins and means everything lingers in the mouth for a very pleasing amount of time. Great class.

This superb wine embodies the ethos of Domaine Serafin, coming from two different plots in the appellation, one with vines of 70 years old and the other just over 100 years. A hugely complex wine, with layers of dark smoky fruits, bilberry and huckleberry. (this and the Latricières are from the oldest vines of the Domaine and this wine comes from a superbly situated 1 ha parcel of Clos de Vougeot high on the hill). A slightly riper blend of red and blue pinot fruit, violets and plenty of warm earth also suffuses the rich, full-bodied and very serious broad-shouldered flavors. This enjoys an abundance of tannin-buffering dry extract that confers a sappy texture to the driving, complex and hugely long finish. One of Chambolle’s highest positioned Premiers Crus, with a very stony soil that produces very fine and mineral wines. Sadly though, they are going through a replanting programme at this exceptional vineyard, so they are currently only making 3 barrels before the next generation of young vines come through and make their mark. Vivacious and energetic, with a fresh and pure red cherry and red currant identity, tense in the mid palate with an impression of tight limestone tannins. Tremendous clarity of fruit.

The Elio Grasso 2016 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is immediately expressive and bright. The wine is savory and rich with a generous bouquet of dried berries, spice, crushed flowers and even a hint of market-fresh blueberry that we don't see in the other wines. The bouquet moves toward balsam notes with mint and rosemary the longer it stays in the glass. I also get anise flower and fresh licorice root as a pretty signature on the close. With aging in large Slavonian oak casks, the tannic integration is spot-on and so is the freshness and purity of those beautiful Nebbiolo nuances. Some 20,000 bottles were released.

  • Antonio Galloni, February 2020, Score: 96+

The 2016 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is a vibrant, massively tannic, austere wine, the likes of which I have never tasted here before. Vertical and explosive in the glass with tons of pure power, the 2016 Gavarini Chiniera is a gorgeous Barolo that is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Swaths of tannin wrap around a core of sweet red cherry fruit. White pepper, mint, orange peel and floral notes develop a bit later, but the 2016 remains reticent and inward, with brilliant acids and tannins that dominate today. The 2016 is a striking wine, but it is going to require considerable patience. 2024 - 2041

  • Wine Advocate, January 2019, Score: 92-94

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru En Orveaux delivers a superb bouquet of cassis, wild damson, grilled squab, sweet soil tones, licorice and exotic spices. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and concentrated, with a lavish core of old vine fruit, succulent acids, and fine-grained structuring tannins, concluding with a long and dramatic finish. This cuvée, from seventy-year-old vines, is the insiders' choice for chez Cathiard this year.

  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 90-93

A more deeply pitched if just as spicy aromatic combination consists of ripe plum, dark currant and violet scents. As is typically the case, the medium-bodied flavors possess both a bit more volume and certainly more richness if perhaps not quite the same level of minerality on the austere, serious and impressively persistent finale. This isn't as refined as the Reignots but it's more powerful. Drink 2029+

The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru contains 40-50% whole bunches and is matured in 100% new oak (the only cuvée to do so.) It has quite an intense bouquet and as you would expect, the new wood is expressed as much as the fruit at the moment. With time, scents of tobacco and undergrowth emerge. The palate is very well balanced with grippy tannin, quite saline in the mouth with plenty of tightly-wound, detailed black fruit towards the lengthy finish. It will require several years in bottle but will be worth the wait. 2023 - 2045

Once again there is an admirably discreet application of wood lurking in the background of the markedly cool, airy and restrained nose that offers up notes of red currant, game, leather, violet and lavender. The broad-shouldered flavors are borderline painfully intense while exuding almost palpable amounts of minerality on the driving, linear and exceptionally firm yet beautifully well-balanced finale. This is clearly built for the very long haul and is a wine that will need it. Drink 2037+

  • Wine Advocate, January 2019, Score: 93-95+

There are three new barrels of the 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru, an integrated but reserved wine that offers up notes of dried rose petals, grilled meats, espresso roast and sweet berries. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and satiny, with excellent depth and a tight-knit core that's framed by a fine but firm chassis of structuring tannins. Less forthcoming than the Mazis-Chambertin and Bonnes-Mares, it likely also has a longer future.

  • Decanter, December 2018, Score: 98

It's a close-run thing, but this is even better than the Mazis in 2017, made with what Arnaud Mortet says are some of the most beautiful grapes he's ever seen. Hailing from a 0.15ha holding of 60-year-old vines, it easily handles its 100% new oak, such is the precision, texture and concentration on offer here. One of the wines of the vintage. The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Combe Aux Moines 1er Cru is tasted from the regular blend matured in oak, although readers should note that Fourrier is trialing some of this cuvée aged in amphora that may or may not be added. It has an attractive bouquet with vivacious Morello cherries, wild strawberry and orange rind aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe fruit, quite spicy with white pepper and touches of sage and oregano livening up the finish. It is already a very promising Gevrey, so I am fascinated to see whether the amphora component ends up being used. 2023 - 2040

The rich, medium-bodied and reasonably concentrated flavors possess good power and muscle on the mouth coating and serious finale. This well made and youthfully austere effort will need at least 5 to 7 years first and potentially reward up to 15. Drink 2029+

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe Aux Moines is very promising indeed, unfurling in the glass with notes of cherry, cassis, dried rose petal, loamy forest floor and a very subtle touch of new wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad-shouldered and deep, with fine-grained but youthfully chewy tannins and juicy acids. After the Clos Saint-Jacques, this is the most serious and multidimensional of Fourrier's Gevrey-Chambertin premiers crus, and it will demand a few years of bottle age.

Interesting floral and red fruit notes cut with a hint of minerality introduce pure, medium weight flavors that offer excellent acid/fruit balance. There is good harmony here and fine finishing elegance and detail. I like the style of this as it has intensity, fine length, a nice touch of class and enough structure to warrant aging this for 7 to 10 years.

A wine of huge class which exudes its breeding and the origins of this fine vineyard. Having initially tasted the 3 component parts from the top, middle and lower slopes, I tasted a wonderful blend of all three highlighting the intensity and preciseness of fruit. This is a delicious wine – dense, full and concentrated with layers of flavours. Huge potential.

  • Burghound, January 2013, Score: 91-93

(From an enormous 7.5 ha parcel of vines planted in the early 1950s). A brooding but notably ripe nose of dark cherry and pungent earth aromas slides gracefully into strikingly rich and tautly muscular big-bodied flavors that possess praiseworthy concentration. There is plenty of underlying tension and energy to the mouth coating and very serious finish that displays only a touch of rusticity. This is potentially outstanding but note that it will, as is usually the case, require plenty of bottle age. (91-93)/2023+

The firm but not prominent tannins should enable this to enjoy 10 to 12 years of upside development potential. Drink: 2020+.

  • Neal Martin, February 2022, Score: 99

The 2019 Ausone was picked September 20-27 for the Merlot and October 3, 5 and 7 for the Cabernet Franc, then matured for 20 months in new French oak with light toasting. This is very refined and focused on the nose, less opulent compared to recent vintages, and very sophisticated, with hints of Montecristo cigar interwoven through the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine but quite firm tannins that frame the lightly spiced black fruit. Touches of pencil lead and white pepper appear toward the prolonged finish. This very composed Ausone might actually drink earlier than other vintages but unequivocally has the substance to age with grace in bottle. There is an abiding sense of completeness here. • Antonio Galloni, February 2022, Score: 98

The 2019 Ausone is a deep, statuesque Saint-Émilion that is at the beginning of what will surely be a very long, long life. Its vertical energy, stunning aromatics and persistence are all things of beauty, but it is the balance here that is so captivating. The acids and tannins are at once searing in their intensity and yet also totally woven into the wine's fabric. Ausone can be quite flattering in its youth. The 2019 is a wine that readers will have to wait for. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle for a decade or more. Drink 2034 - 2069

  • Jancis Robinson, June 2020, Score: 17.5+

Compact, dense and structured but just a little austere at present. Fresh and lifted with a hint of tea and floral notes, depth of fruit and finely matted texture but everything reined in, the plentiful tannins subdued behind. But nothing in excess. Just a slow burner. Undoubted ageing potential. Drink 2030-2050 (JL)

Unwinding in the glass with deep aromas of wild berries, vine smoke, orange rind, exotic spices and violets, framed by a deft application of classy new oak, the 2019 Ausone is full-bodied, rich and concentrated, with beautiful purity of fruit, lively acids and ripe but abundant structuring tannins. Deep, layered and vibrant, it's full of potential and will likely emerge as one of the most long-lived 2019s. This is another magical wine from what many consider to be Saint-Émilion's greatest terroir, and it will demand and richly reward patience. Drink 2029 - 2065
