En Primeur | Burghound Recommends

Although the field of serious Burgundy critics is becoming ever more crowded, Allen Meadows (Burghound) still stands out as the original and the best. So, when he releases his review of a new vintage it is worth sitting up and taking notice. He is positively rapturous, commenting that the 2019 wines are: “Ripe, fresh, concentrated and very high-quality.” If you have not yet dipped a toe in the fabulous Burgundy 2019 pool, now is the moment.

  • Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 92-94

The 2019 La Grande Rue Grand Cru is aromatically tailored in a similar vein to the domaine’s other Grand Crus: ethereal and floral in style with rose-petal-infused red fruit, the quintessential Pinoté, and hints of crushed rock developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, cohesive and poised, gaining weight with aeration toward a very pixelated finish and leaving a ferrous aftertaste. Very fine, very feminine.

A more deeply pitched nose offers up notes of plum, dark currant, earth and soft spice nuances. There is more volume to the rich and velvet-textured medium weight flavors that possess slightly more depth on the lingering finish. This isn't as refined but I like the complexity. Drink 2022+

  • Goedhuis, December 2016

One of most classic examples of Morey St Denis, this finely positioned premier cru sits in the middle of the village below the great Clos de la Roche vineyards. Radiant purple in colour, with generous fruit flavours of damsons and sloes. A well-structured and succulent wine, with a fine drive of mineral depth. Long and classy.

A pungent but pretty nose is comprised by notes of wood, freshly sliced plum, cassis and earth. There is even better punch and mid-palate concentration to the moderately stony and beautifully well-detailed flavors that also display focused power on the broad-shouldered, firm and driving finish. Good stuff if you have the patience to allow this at least 6 years at a minimum and to see this at full maturity, 12 to 15 years of bottle age. Outstanding

  • Neal Martin, February 2012, Score: 98

Tasted single blind against its peers. Chateau Climens always tends to go into its shell after bottling, which is probably why I was not dishing out an even higher score to this still, spellbinding Barsac. The 2007 is endowed with a lovely bouquet: very pure with honey, a touch of orange-blossom and a touch of quince. The palate is very well-balanced with great purity and a dash of spice as well as a lovely viscous, botrytis-laden finish that possesses awesome weight and persistency. This is a slice of heaven in a glass, but it definitely needs time to reveal its true potential. Tasted January 2011.

  • Neal Martin, April 2010, Score: 99+

Tasted twice at UGC tastings, it was actually under blind conditions that the Climens 2007 re-confirmed its status as the best Sauternes of the vintage. It retains an ethereal bouquet of honey, white peach, apricot and orange-blossom with ethereal purity and joie de vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with exquisite balance and essence of mineralite. It balances on tiptoe with perfect acidity that effortlessly counterpoises those layers of rich honeyed fruit; the finish taut, vibrant and with a sense of place. This is outstanding in every way. Perfect? I would not bet against it deserving that loaded adjective one day in the future. Drink 2015-2050.

  • Neal Martin, July 2009, Score: 98-100

The final blend (although not blended in the cellars.) The nose has certainly closed down since last year, tightly coiled. However the palate is superb: brilliant definition and weight of fruit. Incredibly pure with notes of honey, fresh apricots, a touch of citrus lemon and passion fruit, wonderful tension and length on the finish. Perhaps the wine of the vintage? Awesome purity and length. The wine of the vintage although I think it will close down after bottling…you have been warned! Drink 2015-2050. Tasted April 2009.

  • Neal Martin, April 2008, Score: 98-100

Multiple tastings of barrels and two micro-blends with Berenice Lurton at the chateau and each one more breath-taking than the last! An intensely minerally nose with astounding delineation and poise with hints of wild honey, orange-blossom and a little almond. The palate displays brilliant balance, so much so that the 150-160gms/L residual is barely noticeable. A sublime viscous, honeyed, peach-tinged finish that leaves the palate tingling with glee. To quote my own words: "it encapsulates everything you love about Sauternes." Bravo Berenice. Drink 2010-2050+ Tasted April 2008.

  • Jancis Robinson

As usual, no finished blend of this wine was available for tasting. Instead we tasted five different possible ingredients, and this year a first possible pre-assemblage blend - one of 39 pre-assemblages. It is truly sobering to think how much wine must be expectorated before Bérénice Lurton and her team are happy to bottle a final blend. The most thrilling was a sample picked on 17 Oct as part of the relatively big second trie, or passage through the vineyard. It had a heady aroma of hazelnuts and was amazingly substantial in terms of both body and richness, the keynote of the best 2007 Sauternes. A slightly dry finish (something evident on the Yquem 2007 too) but so fascinating in terms of its array of elements. The wines from the first trie were much lighter and simpler but had great clarity and freshness while the third trie's produce seemed lighter than thesecond too. But overall, this should be a very promising year for Climens. Drink 2018-35.

70% whole bunch vinification and 12 new barrels in 14. Full deep purple. The nose is much sterner than the Grands Echezeaux but the wine may be very nearly as fine. There is a purist, Cistercian element on the palate: this is beautifully constructed though the oak shows at the moment, savoury, with real grip at the back side alongside the happily managed dark fruit. This wine is weighted to the back, whereas the Grands Echezeaux gets you going form the first moment. Very promising- no, more than that, its the real deal.

  • Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 90-92

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, quite floral with hints of crushed violet and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant fleshy mouthfeel. This is not a deep Fremiets, but there are fine-boned tannins and it is potentially a pretty and feminine Volnay with a touch of piquancy on the finish. Lovely. Drink 2020-2035

  • Burghound, April 2018, Score: 90-93

A background note of menthol sits atop the spicy combination of floral and the pure essence of dark pinot fruit. The highly energetic and equally pure middle weight flavors brim with minerality on the beautifully refined, saline and even firmer finish that also exhibits a trace of youthful austerity. This well-balanced effort is really quite lovely and very Frémiets in character. Outstanding. Drink 2026+

  • Stephen Tanzer, January 2017, Score: 91-93

Bright medium ruby. Brooding aromas of black cherry, blueberry and violet. Dense, sappy Volnay with compelling sweetness to its dark berry fruit. Finishes with dusty, broad tannins and good saline lift. The estate lost 25% of this parcel to frost, but Guillaume d'Angerville told me that the ultimate crop was actually larger than he thought it would be during the summer.

  • Decanter, January 2018, Score: 91

Like the premier cru blend, Fremiets is quite fragrant and expressive this year, offering up notes of plum, raspberry, raw cocoa and a touch of violets. The wine is deeper, more concentrated and taut on the palate, with a firm chassis of tannin which is likely to become more integrated after racking and further élevage. Drink 2024-2040

According to Ghislaine, the warm summer conditions really suited this centrally located premier cru in 2018 and has, in her words, “made it much friendlier than some years!” Dense purple colour, it focuses more on black cherry and darker fruits. Despite its silky volume it has broad shoulders and subtle power. The overall intensity sits comfortably with the touch of minerality at the end of the palate. Excellent.

Such a flagship for both the domaine and the appellation, this is an exceptional Clos de la Roche. Full of dark cheery and black fruits. The initial impression is a wine with beautiful volume, tremendously gracious and the noticeable intensity and concentration of fruit build as the layers evolve. A wine full of self confidence, with a mass of deep dark black mocha and spice, it has a “digestible” character about it. There is no doubting its class, potentially a great wine in the making.

Marvellous purple colour. The nose is seductively heady but with underlying class. Takes time to dig out, but there is a sensuality waiting to pounce. Much more together, rather less of a vinification style. It is still quite a brash fruit that comes out at the front of the palate, then the real wine further behind. The finish in particular shows style as well as persistence. Clearly the superior wine in the range. 4/5 stars.

A reserved, cool and inexpressive nose requires aggressive swirling to eventually liberate its high-toned aromas of essence of red cherry, just turned earth and plenty of sauvage nuances. There is absolutely superb intensity to the super-sleek texture of the broad-shouldered flavors thanks to the fine-grained tannins that also shape the moderately austere and equally long finish. This is genuinely stunning though very much built-to-age.

The succulent and caressing yet markedly powerful and muscular larger-bodied flavors deliver fine depth and persistence if perhaps not quite the same vibrancy on the even firmer finale. This mildly warm effort is also very good but as one would expect, more robust.Drinking 2034+.

This fine Premier Cru is in the middle of the village lying below Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, and has a similar hedonistic self-confidence.  A gratifying scent of summer pudding and ground coffee bean. Tasted out of barrel at the Domaine. As usual, the nose is more closed and introverted than the other Vosne Premier Crus, but it reluctantly unfurls to reveal darker, more broody fruit with hints of violet. The palate is very structured, more stoic but with great breeding. This is a long-term wine that may not show its true colours for several years, but once again there is great mineralité showing on the long, persistent finish. Intuition tells me that this may eventually surpass the RSV.

  • Burghound, January 2012, Score: 94

A highly perfumed nose of classic Vosne-style spice and ripe black fruit is trimmed in quite generous wood treatment that for the moment is borderline too much. Like the '09 Vosne villages, this is definitely on the robust side with powerful middle weight plus flavors that possess excellent concentration on the tightly focused and solidly structured and mildly austere finish that delivers explosive and striking length. Malconsorts is naturally masculine and this very ripe and serious example is very much in that mold. Note that there is so much underlying material that my score assumes that the liberal oak treatment will be integrated in time as this is definitely a wine that is built for the long-term.Drink: 2024+.Notes: from a .74 ha parcel of 35+ year old vines.Comments: outstanding!

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2011, Score: 17

I had the huge pleasure of tasting this wine in three different casks: a Remond Tronçais, a François Frères and a Remond Jupilles from the forest of Bertrange in Nievre. The wine is very much in the Cathiard style with bright crimson colour, round fruit and fresh elegance, though in the Tronçais barrel it had a trace of oak and definitely needed to gain a bit of depth. The François Frères example had the most structure, seemed drier and was particularly vibrant whereas the wine from the Jupilles barrel was almost silky smooth. Lucky Cathiard has 15 casks' worth of this winefrom a plot next to La Tâche, although he had to buy out his three sisters' shares.

  • Tim Atkin, February 2011, Score: 95

Very closed when I tasted it from barrel, and again in London, this is dense, chewyand quite firm, especially for the vintage, but it has amazing depth and concentration.
