A deeply pitched and slightly riper nose of cassis and spiced plum adds nuance to the intensely earthy aromas where the earth character can also be found on the rich, full and voluminous flavors that are almost opulent on the mid-palate yet the finish is borderline austere. This is a very serious effort that has a velvety texture but tightens up quickly on the backend due to the buried structure. Terrific potential here in a "built for the long haul" package that delivers amazing quality for its level.

This wonderful cuvée was absolutely singing when I tasted from cask. Stunning raspberry and strawberry fruit aromas. On the palate it is a beautiful blend between the silky elegance of true Volnay, with some defined backbone and power. Rich and concentrated this has huge potential.

Sadly production was down 50% for this fine vineyard which lies alongside Bonnes Mares, because it is a quite glorious cuvée. Lots of black winter fruits and hints of Christmas spice. It is bright and fresh, with a natural purity. Fine length with telltale of Chambolle silkiness on the finish.

Here the reduction is heavy and it not only crushes the fruit but it also extends to the palate and experience has proven that this is never a good thing. To be fair, reduction in the mouth isn't necessarily fatal but it is a serious warning sign that the wine may not clean up. There is excellent underlying material and it is on this that I base my provisional range but with an important question mark added. Drink: 2028+

Bright, dark red; these 2016s all have inviting limpid colors. Slightly reduced aromas of red berries, mocha and soil. Fleshier and more concentrated than the Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes, with its sweet dark fruit and spice flavors cut by musky minerality. At once silkier and more backward than the Millandes, finishing with substantial ripe tannins. With its rocky complexity, this wine reminded me of a mini-Bonnes Mares.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens ‘11 has an attractive bouquet with vivacious red cherries, bergamot and cold wet stones. The palate is well defined with a crisp line of acidity. This is a lighter style of Rugiens from de Montille and though it just lacks a little persistence, it does offer fine balance and poise. Like the Latricières, the nose is ripe, cool and restrained while featuring elegant aromas of overtly spicy and earthy red cherry liqueur and discreet newly turned earth nuances. There is fine concentration to the intense, palate staining and muscular flavors that also coat the mouth with dry extract while offering a superbly persistent finish that is quite firmly structured. This beautifully balanced and powerful effort is almost lilting and overall, this is quite simply terrific. Drink 2037+ Don't miss!

From the sector known as Les Petits Epenots which is recognised for making a fine, poised style of Pommard. A deep crimson colour, with wild fruits of the forest aromas. The 2022 Pommard Epenots 1er Cru easily has the richest, most opulent bouquet with violet-tinged red fruit, quite vivacious in style, a Pommard determined to seduce. The palate is medium-bodied and perhaps more…contained than the aromatics. But plenty of black plum fruit, baking powder and cracked black pepper remain, exerting gentle grip on the finish. Quite robust, but it will age well in bottle. Drinking Window: 2025-2040.

Mid crimson. An interesting complex and more savoury nose. A little more red fruit perfume. 50 years old vines which were in not too bad a state. A bit more, in fact a lot more, punch behind, with a weight of dark fruit and an altogether more complete finish. The fruit keeps returning. Drink from 2028-2035.

As is usually the case, this offers a big step up in aromatic refinement with its ripe, pure, cool and fresh nose that combines notes of red and blue pinot fruit plus wet stone, violet and hints of earth. (from a 1.5 ha parcel that is almost entirely in terres rouges). A reserved and openly taciturn nose reluctantly reveals notes of a cool and exceptionally fresh mélange of plum and red berries that are freely cut with stone and warm earth nuances. The mouth feel is unusually refined and while there is excellent size, weight and concentration to the large-scaled flavors, the tannins are quite fine though dense and it's clear that this markedly persistent and youthfully austereeffort will require plenty of cellar time. Note that while it's a minor distinction, this is notquite as austere as the Latricières. In a word, terrific. 2025+

The 2012 Comtes de Champagne is gorgeous. Warm and resonant in the glass, the 2012 Comtes shows all the allure that makes this vintage so appealing. The combination of bright citrus, mineral and floral notes typical of Comtes, enhanced by the soft contours of the vintage, makes for an inviting, open-knit Champagne that is quite showy right out of the gate. Light tropical accents on the finish add an exotic flair. Usually I recommend cellaring just-released Comtes, but that won’t be necessary here. Drink 2022-2042.

The 2012 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne is showing beautifully out of the gates, offering up demonstrative aromas of sweet golden orchard fruit, buttery croissants, peach and hazelnuts. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and enveloping, it's a rich, textural, vinous Comtes somewhat reminiscent of the brilliant 2002. If it gains in tension and cut (as the 2002 did and as I suspect the 2012 will) with more time on cork, it will make this initial rating seem conservative. Drink 2024-2055.

In search of a simple, but delicious wine to go with herb and lamb sausages, eaten outside on a warm late spring evening, assisted by the perfume of our favourite roses, Madame Alfred Carrie`re and Fantin Latour though the latter’s scent is so sublimely powerful that it might drown the pinot aromatics. Back to the wine. I chose the 2012 vintage from my favourite Clos des Perrie`res vineyard in Meloisey, a village famed for its wine in the Middle Ages. This is a dense powerful wine for the Hautes Co^tes yet with good acidity. It is maturing only slowly but is in a good place for drinking with tonight’s food.

Bordering Pommard, this is a more powerfully structured Beaune than many reds in the appellation. Very rounded tannins and the dark spice on finish gives a further burst of unctuous sweet ripe fruit.

The 2022 Beaune Epenottes 1er Cru needs to forage a little more focus on the nose; it’s a tad rustic in style compared to its peers. Bold and rich, dark bramble fruit flavours balance the volume, underpinned by a tannic depth. Long and savoury.

With over 6 hectares of village Chablis adjoining both Premiers and Grands Crus sites, Olivier has all the ammunition to make a benchmark Chablis. Notes of golden apple and toasted brioche can be found on the nose, while the palate displays generous fruit and a delicate citrus pith finish. Though no oak is used during élevage, the steady maturation on the lees creates a style with great depth and purity.

Bailly noted that this had been bottled 3 days before I tasted it and not surprisingly, there was a background hint of sulfur on the more obviously Chablis-like nose of Granny Smith apples, lemon rind and tidal pool nuances. There is also better volume and mid-palate concentration to the more attractively textured medium-bodied flavors that possess an enveloping mouthfeel, all wrapped in a nicely long if not especially dry finale. This was a bit awkward but in fairness, it had just been bottled so my rating offers the benefit of the doubt.

Due to its exposure, this is one of the first places to be picked during harvest. What makes Vaillons so special is the balance both on the nose and palate. The former displays a mixture of hawthorn flowers and ripe nectarine, enlivened by hints of lemon zest and freshly squeezed grapefruit. From three separate locations, it is the site in Roncières in particular, with its 95-year-old vines, which gives the wine depth and complexity.

Here too there is just enough wood to mention framing the cool and bright aromas of mineral reduction lemon confit and refreshing sea breeze nuances. There is excellent density, especially for the vintage, to the middle weight flavors that are rich and caressing while maintaining good verve that carries over to the clean, dry and youthfully austere finale. This could use more depth but the fine potential is evident. Lovely.
