En Primeur | Burghound Recommends

Although the field of serious Burgundy critics is becoming ever more crowded, Allen Meadows (Burghound) still stands out as the original and the best. So, when he releases his review of a new vintage it is worth sitting up and taking notice. He is positively rapturous, commenting that the 2019 wines are: “Ripe, fresh, concentrated and very high-quality.” If you have not yet dipped a toe in the fabulous Burgundy 2019 pool, now is the moment.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

With 65-year-old vines on a mixture of limestone and blue clay soils, the southeast-facing vineyards in Montmains yield a nicely rounded style, marked by distinct minerality. The nose displays blossom and ripe orchard fruit in the form of golden apples and Conference pear, with delicate notes of dry toasted hazelnut. While there is some textural richness, the wine has a flinty core that is like a needle through velvet. One for the Chablis purist.

  • Burghound, October 2024, Score: 89-92

Notes of mineral reduction, lemongrass and a floral nuance are complemented by caressing and seductively textured medium weight flavors that possess a lovely sense of underlying tension on the clean and dry finale. This is certainly pretty but not as complex.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2025, Score: 17

Much more beautiful than the Fôret. Just gorgeous and full of wet-stone appeal. Just what Chablis lovers seek. (JR)

  • Jasper Morris MW, June 2024, Score: 90-93

Mid lemon yellow. Some of the stony reduction here which was missing in Vaillons. Mostly white fruit, notably saline at the finish, quite a wealth of fruit. Some lemon drops as well at the back, and fine persistence. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted Jun 2024

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

The domaine’s most important Premier Cru site, covering a little under 5 hectares, the fruit is sourced from four different locations which share the same Kimmeridgian soils as the Grands Crus. Vinified with 15% new oak barrels, there is a complexity and concentration to the wine, where accents of lemon curd, ripe pear, and vanilla are balanced by subtle spice. There is a creaminess to the palate, yet still with that Chablisien energy and drive that leaves you wanting more. Simply superb.

  • Burghound, October 2024, Score: 91-93

Here too there is a mild whiff of exotic character to the aromas of citrus confit, passion fruit, spice and plenty of Chablis typicity. There is fine volume to the more concentrated broad-shouldered flavors that display evident power on the saline-inflected, balanced and nicely dry finale. This possesses fine development potential and is a wine to consider.

  • Jasper Morris MW, June 2024, Score: 91-93

Vinified in 10% new wood, 90% stainless then all transferred to barrel for ageing. A slightly fuller yellow and the oak shows a bit on the nose, though more in the robustness of style than actual flavour. Solid and indeed striking white fruit fills the palate with a dancing acidity as well, again showing the slightly saline note of the year and region. This cuvée needs time to digest the oak, but will be worth waiting for. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted Jun 2024.

The 2022 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is a powerful wine, though comparatively speaking only a middleweight in the context of years such as 2018, 2019 and 2020, and it's more suave and integrated out of the gates than those vintages. Offering up deep aromas of ripe berry fruit mingled with baking spices, rose petals, orange zest and vine smoke, it's full-bodied, layered and velvety, with a fleshy core of fruit, supple tannins and a nicely cohesive finish.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 93-96

A restrained, spicy and broad-ranging nose features a plenitude of spice elements on the ripe, fresh and layered nose of both red and dark currant, earth and a whiff of the sauvage. Once again there is a caressing yet powerful mouthfeel to the beautifully concentrated and strikingly textured big-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the hugely long, firm and very much built-to-age finish. This is extremely impressive and in particular I like the fruit-acid-tannin balance. Drinking 2037+.

5 Star Wine. 32 barrels made, which is equal to half the red wine cellar! A bright even purple. A slightly nutty note to the otherwise reticent bouquet. Then follows a vast volume of fruit right across the piece, a density which is in a different league to the Chapelle. Absolutely swamps the palate and with the characteristic precision of the vintage. Excellent fresh feel to the finish. I think this is a wine which could explode in volume from here, with so much of the fruit expression currently being held back by the tension. Drink from 2035-2045+.

  • Neal Martin, December 2014, Score: 92-94

The 2013 Clos des Lambrays is whole bunch as usual (whereas the Morey Saint Denis is destemmed) and raised in 50% new oak. Thierry Brouin assembled my sample from four barrels scattered around the cellar, since the ventilation at one end creates variance in maturation. It has a refined bouquet with crisp leafy red berry fruit, harmonious and gaining intensity in the glass, fine mineralité underneath. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins and very well-judged acidity. This feels very harmonious with more energy and tension than the 2012, structured with a bright and vivacious finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is a classy Clos des Lambrays 2013 that should age with panache. Drink: 2016 - 2040

  • Burghound, January 2016, Score: 93

Here there is gentle wood setting off a similar if more complex nose that displays prominent floral and spice scents. There is very good volume to the utterly delicious medium weight and wonderfully vibrant flavors that possess really fine delineation before culminating in a mineral-inflected, saline and focused finish. I very much admire the sleek mouth feel as well as the impeccable balance. Lovely juice that is quite firmly structured and a bit less youthfully austere than usual.

Sourced from from east- and west-facing parcels, uniting the perfume and texture of east with the cooler, more mineral profile of west (especially beneficial in warm years like this, to support the acid backbone), Samuel Billaud's 2023 Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir is opening in the glass to reveal a bouquet of apricot, dried white flowers, pear and tangerine zest. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with good tension and grip, it’s beautifully balanced, concluding with a persistent finish.

  • Burghound, October 2024, Score: 91-94

The nose is difficult to read as there are still residual lactic nuances along with ample wood toast. The palate impression is much more interesting with its sappy and caressing texture that is highly seductive while displaying a lovely sense of refinement on the compact, moderately dry and balanced finale. This should cleanup nicely and repay up to a decade of keeping.

Three plots, on both sides of the valley. Vaudésir was the last to be picked, 9 days after Clos and Blanchot. Half has been ,made in wood and half in stainless steel. Backward but with a suggestion of intensity. Very greasy because of an oily layer which will disappear. Indeed, shaking the glass adds a bit of salinity. I think this will become very good once it has eaten the oil (which will happen). Particularly long aftertaste Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted Jul 2024.

The wine is broad, lush, and designed to be drunk in its first decade of life. This wine has superb concentration, purity, and freshness, very much in keeping with the overall personality of the vintage.

It has an attractive bouquet of blackberry and wild hedgerow, a distinct marine influence emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, a touch of cola and moderate depth, but maybe just lacking the complexity of the 2015 or 2016 toward the finish. Drink over the next 10 years.

It's refined and chalky, with some forest floor and spicy whole-bunch aromas followed by sweet red berry fruit and filigree tannins.

A centrally located Premier Cru on the lower slopes, characterised by its stony soils, which benefits from an excellent southerly exposure. Striking perfume of sloe, tayberry and sweet raspberry compote. The warmer location shines through in the palate, with delicious richness and subtle, fine tannins followed by a rewarding finish of vanilla spice. Charming and immediately pleasurable.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 91-93

The 2023 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Gravins 1er Cru, 22% whole cluster, is much more reticent on the nose compared to the Les Lavières. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant orange rind note infusing the black fruit on the entry. With fine structure and good grip, this feels precise and focused on the finish that has just the right amount of salinity. This is excellent.

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2024, Score: 90-93

A powerful purple with a deep black centre. There appears to be a strict intensity to the Gravains. A bit of plum, plenty of dark red berries, some tannins once again, a more compact wine than the Lavières but possibly a point more intense as well. 14% helps to explain this. Drink from 2029-2035.

The family own a substantial 5 hectares of vines coming from 15 different plots in almost every sector of the appellation, running from northwest of the village down to the boundary of Chorey Les Beaune, with vines averaging 50 years of age. A vibrant fruit expression of fresh cherry and damson is interlaced with a hint of exotic spice. The succulence of fruit sits perfectly alongside the easy rounded tannins. Very attractive.

True to the name of this lieu dit, the vineyard for this cuvée sits at altitude and on a rocky outcrop of eroded limestone. Lifted, bright and full of redcurrant and lightly floral aromas, this is a very fresh, precise expression of Pinot Noir. Great purity on the mid-palate gives way to a mineral texture and blood orange acidity that deliver great tension and drive. The limestone influence runs through this wine from start to finish.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2025, Score: 16

Smoky aroma, a little like slightly burnt popcorn but actually quite pleasant. White peach fruit, delicate but pretty and fresh. A kind of canned-grapefruit sweet-citrus note which is actually much more delicious than it sounds. This is rather good.

‘Thank you for visiting Savigny’ should read the sign at Les Peuillets, the final Premier Cru vineyard before arriving at the slopes of Beaune. Here the warm, sandy soils produce an affable style of wine and Girardin is the master of such expression. There is a plushness to the wine, where sweet black cherry and bramble fruit is paired with toasted oak and delicate floral notes. With 10 months in barrel, the tannins are fine-grained, while there is terrific freshness and a pink peppercorn spice to the finish.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 88-91

The nose displays crystalline fruit, with notes of lemon zest and nectarines, while the palate possesses wonderful textural richness with a tarte citron complexity on the finish. This year, Justin kept the wine in oak for two months longer than normal to retain the balance and expression of previous iterations.

This impressive Premier Cru faces the hillside of Corton Charlemagne. The cool, east-facing white marl slope makes it an ideal site for growing exceptionally pure Chardonnay, a perfect position as temperatures rise throughout the Côte d’Or. Following fermentation in barrel, 80% of the wine goes through cask aging and 20% in cement egg shaped cuvées, to maintain the freshness. A floral, tuberose scent, an initial graceful rounded texture flows into an orange citrus lift. A rewarding and appealingly long finish.

  • Wine Advocate, January 2025, Score: 92+

Opening in the glass with aromas of crisp orchard fruit, wet stones and white flowers, framed by a deft touch of reduction, Rapet's 2023 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru En Caradeux Blanc is medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with terrific cut and energy, this is another particularly successful cuvée this year.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2024, Score: 90-92

Their holding touches the restaurant Le Charlemagne. 20% has been made in egg and 20% in new wood. Mid lemon yellow. There is clearly more density here in En Caradeux and a more balanced ripeness. Excellent on the palate with the sunshine just showing in a couple of more exotic fruit notes alongside the core fresh white orchard fruit. Notable length, with just the right acidity.

This, the oldest section of vines within the Rollin estate, was planted by Raymond Rollin back in 1945. The soil is an excellent representation of the appellation, combining clay and red iron with a firm bedrock of limestone. Simon destalks 100% of the fruit, to focus on the charm and florality of Pinot Noir. Shining brick red colour, the red cherry fruit flavours have substance and depth thanks to the grippy tannins sitting quietly underneath. Deep, full and rich, showing the benefit of the 75-year-old vines and the excellent vineyard location.

The 2023 shows bright, lifted notes of ripe red cherries and raspberries with a pretty overlay of white pepper spice and dried wild herbs. With rounded, plush and juicy red fruit at its core, this is an immediately approachable Pinot with just the right amount of fine-grained, chalky tannin to provide interest and depth. Charming and very reflective of both the vintage and village.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 89-91

A blend from 8ha of vineyards, making a 50,000 bottle cuvée. This has been racked and blended, for bottling in the early Spring. Soils here are best described as mixed and are renowned for producing flamboyant, fruit-driven wines that bring immediate, undemanding pleasure. The 2023 certainly conforms to this archetype, with bright and enticing notes of raspberry, red plums and bitter cherries. Fleshy, generous and rounded on the palate, a lovely volume of fruit is supported by fine-boned acidity and a lift of mineral tension. A light chalkiness to the fine-grained tannins brings texture and grip to the finish.

Château de Marsannay own 0.7 hectares of old vines here, making this a cuvée of abundant depth and complexity. The 2023 shows a wealth of black cherry and dark forest fruit notes, along with hints of bitter almond, graphite and a wild, savouriness. • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 91-93

Three quarters whole bunch. Shorter cuvaison 10-12 days for this wine (compared to a typical two weeks or a touch more). A fine plump purple, never a problem getting colour here, the vines are almost straight on the rocks, with very low yields. The bouquet is stunning, reminiscent of upper end Chambolle, now avoiding puree de fruits. Finely balanced across the palate, a little white pepper to finish, a racy wine of fine pedigree. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is completely packed with tightly wound black and red berry layers, framed by firm, ripe, finely grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with incredibly persistent and evocative floral and mineral layers. An absolute head-turner, this 2018 is all that and then some. Tim Mondavi mentioned that this is due to be bottled in just a few weeks—mid-August—meaning this barrel sample I tasted is pretty close to being a finished wine. • Matthew Jukes, April 2022, Score: 18.5+

This is the first release of The Wheelright, named after Johann Christian Henschke, the founding father and first-generation winemaker at Henschke. A skilled stonemason and wheelwright, I imagine he would be pretty chuffed to taste this wine and learn that the sixth generation of Henschkes is currently driving this business forwards at a gathering momentum. Made from low-yielding, biodynamically-grown, old-vine Shiraz, the vines were planted near the village of Eden Valley at 500m in 1968 by fourth-generation winemaker Cyril Henschke. This vintage commemorates 150 years of Henschke winemaking, so it is somewhat of a landmark. This is a rather different style of Shiraz to the others in this collection, given it comes from a higher site and a wetter one, too. There is not the density of black fruit that one finds in Mount Edelstone or Hill of Grace in this beautiful wine and to use an ecclesiastical analogy, it seems as if the bass voices have taken time out from the choir and left the altos, tenors and sopranos to carry on with their anthems! Red-fruited in style with floral notes and lip-smacking savouriness on the finish, this is a spicy, energetic Shiraz that seems to deliver its message effortlessly. So many wines try so hard to impress, but The Wheelright keeps rolling along with a wonderful, measured tempo. Vital, sonorous and energetic, while you can drink it today, I anticipate it will hold for two decades, such is the intricacy of its tannins and the crispness of the acidity on the finish. Drink now – 2040.

  • Decanter, April 2022, Score: 95

The epitome of elegance with its sheen of silky, pure red fruits and lissome acidity, in 2017 this Eden Valley Shiraz is closer to Adelaide Hills geographically and in spirit. Medium-bodied, the beguiling strawberry and plum palate is delicately scented with pink peppercorn, coltsfoot, pine needle and black pepper. Subtle undertones of moss, twig and wattleseed draw you in further. Drinking beautifully now, with soft grainy tannins to the finish and lingering spice. Drinking Window 2022 – 2037

Transparent garnet. Lusciously ripe nose but extremely fresh on the palate, with medicinal and herbal top notes. Only medium body, despite the alcoholic strength, but this opens up most impressively on the finish – a real fan of flavour! I tasted this over several days and found it really opened up with time, which bodes well for its longevity. Real lift and truly beautiful texture on the finish with a hint of unsweetened chocolate. You could drink this now but do aerate it well before serving. 14.5%. Drink 2022 – 2035.

he 2021 Saint-Aubin Derrière Chez Edouard Haut Densité 1er Cru, from vines planted at 20,000 per hectare, has the most backward and austere nose of Lamy's whites at this stage. The palate is well-balanced with a malic entry and fine depth. Quite a "serious" Saint-Aubin that comes across more like a Puligny in style. Good length, if just a bit aloof at the moment. 93+ Drink 2026-2048

  • William Kelley, Jan 2024, Score: 95

Aromas of crisp green orchard fruit, citrus zest, apple blossom and sweet stones introduce the 2021 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Haute Densité, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and complete wine that's layered and harmonious, with a cool core of fruit that's girdled by racy acids, concluding with a long, saline finish. Yields here were 22 hectoliters per hectare, with a planting density of up to 30,000 vines per hectare. As ever, this will really demand a decade of patience to reveal its full potential. 95. Drink 2031-2055

Only one cask of this wine was made in 2014 following the devastating hails storm which wiped out such a large swathe of the vineyard. A very intense wine, full of liquorice and dark spices. This is tightly integrated and finishes very long.

  • Neal Martin, December 2015, Score: 93-95

The 2014 Pommard 1er Cru les Rugiens opens wonderfully in the glass, crystalline red cherry fruit mixed with fresh strawberry and orange zest, lively and precise, real sophistication and sensuality here. The palate is crisp and fresh, very powerful with tangible mineralité and tension. It is one of the best Pommard Rugiens that I have tasted for a long time, a sense of completeness here that I am sure will be intact once in bottle. Drink 2018-2035

  • Tim Atkin, January 2015, Score: 94

The bottom part of Rugiens deserves to be a Grand Cru, according to Jean-Pierre Charlot. This is classic Pommard: firm, concentrated, even a little austere, with dark berry fruit, good grip and depth and the potential to develop further complexity in bottle. Drink 2020-27
