Firm reduction renders the nose unreadable. There is excellent intensity to the gamy, dense and overtly powerful larger-scaled flavors that terminate in a markedly structured, rustic and robust finish that is compact and quite serious. This is a full-on Charmes that is impressive in its fashion though it doesn't possess much finesse. Drink: 2035+

A spicy and notably ripe dark pinot fruit nose that offers black cherry and a touch of cassis that continues onto the tightly wound, earthy, rich and austere but amply powerful flavors that are impressively backward and dense, particularly for the vintage and this too is going to require the better part of a decade before it really gets rolling. I like the style and the definition, particularly on the superbly long and intense finish. Drink: 2014+

This was the Scavino family’s first vineyard and was planted by Lorenzo’s great grandfather. It was replanted just after the Second World War and the vines are 80 years old. “The sandier soils of Bricco Fiasco impart sweeter tannins”, says Lorenzo. Utterly ethereal in its perfume, with delicate rose petal, alpine strawberry, and sweet red cherry. The palate is just as fine and pretty, with sweet, filigree tannins and a soothing acidity that are the perfect foil to the pure fruit. Drink 2023-2030

Bright, full red. Captivating perfumed scents of wild strawberry, raspberry, white flowers, spices and white pepper, with darker notes of cherry and menthol emerging with aeration. In a distinctly juicy, minerally, cool style compared to the broader 2015, but with terrific intensity to its youthfully imploded red fruit flavors. Powerful crushed rock and saline mineral flavors give this wine's finish outstanding energy and lift. Already compellingly floral and perfumed, this wine will nonetheless require patience owing to its substantial dusty tannins. 2023-2034

The 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru, which like the Clos de Bèze is matured in 30% new oak, has a tighty-wound bouquet with broody red berry fruit, oyster shell and granitic scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip. This seems more linear than the Clos-de-Bèze at the moment, but there is very good depth and a precise saline finish that will obviously need time and patience. I hope that it gains just a little more flesh by the time of bottling as this is a very fine Chambertin in the making. Drink: 2018 - 2038

(from purchased grapes that Perrot has the right to intercede with certain aspects of the viticulture). This is even more aromatically restrained than the Bèze with a markedly floral and earth-scented nose of both red and dark berries that is cool, elegant and airy. The rich, intense and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors are a bit more mineral-driven as well and I very much like the mid-palate density that adds to the sense of scale, all wrapped in hugely long finish where the abundant dry extract does a fine job of pushing the very firm tannic spine to the background, at least for the moment. The Bèze is a knock-out but my instinct is that ultimately this will prove to be the slightly better wine in time. Drink 2030+

The 2022 Rauzan-Ségla was picked 2 to 28 September at 30hL/ha and matured for 18 months in 50% new oak. Nicolas Audebert told me that it contains 17% vin de presse which is slightly higher than normal, a combination of 150 separate vinifications. This has a very opulent bouquet with layers of black cherries, créme de cassis and violets. Perhaps just a little too decadent? The palate is medium-bodied with fine balance, grainy tannins, very pure and focused with quite a minerally finish. Long in the mouth. It's just missing that knockout blow at the moment, yet it's still a supremely well-crafted Margaux. Drink 2030-2065

The 2022 Rauzan-Ségla is a classy, elegant wine. Even so, the 2022 very clearly lacks the immediacy of some surrounding vintages. Readers should be prepared to cellar this for a number of years The mid-weight, gracious presence of Rauzan-Ségla is very much present, and yet the tannins are pretty imposing. Dark red/purplish fruit, rose petal, graphite and white pepper are all beautifully delineated in the glass. The 2022 is pure and total sophistication. Château Rauzan-Ségla (2ème Cru Margaux) 72 Cabernet Sauvignon, 26 Merlot, 2 Petit Verdot 50% new oak for 18 months 14.5% alc 3.7 pH 30 hl/ha With considerable power and concentration, this is a closed wine with a midnight black fruit core and the deepest foundations. It appears to be commandingly oaky, but as it is so well integrated, it is hard to see this carpentry, aside from on the finish, where it brings crisp sappiness and mouthwatering traction. Introverted, grand, layered and exotic, this will be a sleeper, and it is clearly made of stunning raw materials, so do not dive in for at least a decade. Interestingly, they harvested the eastern sides of the vines and the western sides of the vines separately, ensuring that the fruit 16 was all in perfect condition as it entered the winery. This extra level of effort has certainly paid off, as this is my highest-ever scoring vintage of Rauzan-Ségla.

The 2022 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is magnificent. In recent years, Estate Director Nicolas Glumineau has pushed Pichon Comtesse to the limit. Maybe even a bit too far. The 2022 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has turned out even better in bottle than I anticipated, bursting from the glass with aromas of cassis and blackberries mingled with scents of licorice, violets and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, layered and enveloping, it's suave, seamless and complete, with faultless precision, pristine integration of tannin, controlled sweetness and a long, expansive finish. The 2022 manages to unite the sensuality that's the estate's calling card and the ripeness of the vintage on the one hand, with a sense of Pauillac classicism on the other, threading the needle to deliver one of the finest wines of the vintage and a benchmark Pichon Comtesse. It's a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc that spent 18 months in barriques (three months more than was formerly the case), two-thirds of which were new. As I wrote en primeur, there's more than a hint of the 1982 about this wine, and like the 1982, the 2022 will offer an exceptionally wide drinking window.

The 2022 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one wine where a comparison with this estate's magical 1982 doesn't appear to be far-fetched. Wafting from the glass with deep aromas of cassis, plums, violets, rose petals, tobacco leaf and pencil shavings, it's full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with a layered, seamless core of fruit that largely conceals its chassis of powdery structuring tannin. Concluding with a long, expansive and beautifully perfumed finish, it's a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc that has the potential to equal or even surpass the 2019 and 2016 vintages at this address. Château Pichon Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande (2ème Cru Pauillac) 78 Cabernet Sauvignon, 17 Merlot, 5 Cabernet Franc 8 There is an extra dimension of juiciness and ripeness here which is, of course, unavoidable in 2022. This fruit clarity and expression make this grand wine a somewhat sleeker and glossier model than of late. There is a profound depth of fruit here, and the oak enhances this fruit elevating the nose and bringing an air of splendour to the whole. While this is a somewhat expressive Lalande, all of the classical notes are buried in this wine’s core, and they can converse fluently at this early stage. It is like taking a roll call of the essential traits needed for a great wine, and the responses are all, ‘Yes, Sir’. This is a stunning wine, and behind all of the exuberance sits a battery of tannins that will propel it forward for a long time. It is simply stunning – this is a modern, expressive and memorable Pichon Lalande and will be a favourite vintage for decades to come.

One of the gems from Pauillac is unquestionably the 2022 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande, which is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. A hypothetical blend of the 2019 and 2020, it's a full-bodied, concentrated, opulent Comtesse offering beautiful blue fruits, some chocolate, leafy herbs, and undeniable minerality, ripe, velvety tannins, and a great finish. Despite the higher Cabernet Sauvignon component, this stays silky, expansive, and incredibly sexy. It's going to be drinkable with just 4-5 years of bottle age but should have a lengthy drink window. Hats off to director Nicolas Glumineau for another legendary wine from this château.

Another exceptional vintage from a property that is delivering at the top of its game, this impresses without seeming to try too hard. Precision winemaking also, with very low pumpovers, reduced by half from a decade ago, and no added sulphites until putting the wine into barrel. 3.65ph, 31h/h yield, with around 50% of production split between this and Reserve.

Dark red/purplish fruit, rose petal, graphite and white pepper are all beautifully delineated in the glass. The 2022 is pure and total sophistication.

The 2007 is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay taken from Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Ambonnay, Verzenay and Verzy for the Pinots and Chouilly, Avize, Cramant and Mesnil for the Chardonnays. In other words, as good as it gets for villages. The wine was done mostly in tank with about 15% of the lots vinified in oak. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. (Originally published in May 2021)

The limestone soil in this vineyard typically produces wine with a mineral nuance: something smoky and violet-scented in its aroma. Even in a dimly lit cellar, you can see the vibrant cherry colour of the young wine. The domaine’s new basket presses have transformed not only the character of tannin structure achieved, but they have also been excellent for colour and brilliance, owner Claude de Nicolay explains. This wine seems so together already, with a harmonious cohesion between fruit, tannin, acidity, and body.

As is the norm at Vietti, I tasted this wine and then wrote this review based on impressions gained from two samples—one opened several hours before my tasting and one opened at the moment of my review. Those floral notes came forth with increased intensity and clarity in the bottle that had been opened longer. The bouquet continues to surprise with touches of black fruit and freshly milled white pepper. However, like many wines from Serralunga d’Alba, this expression from Lazzarito reveals a pretty inner paradox. Those ethereal and balsamic aromas cede to a dense and rich mouthfeel, characterized by structure and power. Those two sides of the wine reach beautiful parity and lasting harmony. Drink 2022-2045

James Suckling, June 2019, Score: 96
This is a very youthful Barolo that has attractive, fragrant perfume with freshly picked roasting herbs and a strong, central thread of ripe cherries and red plums. The pure and concentrated palate frames intense plum and cherry flavors in long, unwavering tannins that deliver rich, strong and seamless into the finish. Exceptional quality and built for aging. Try from 2025.

Decanter, January 2019, Score: 94
Although Vietti was bought by an American company in 2016, the long-standing family winemaker Luca Currado remains in place. This powerful expression of an important Serralunga vineyard is aged both in barriques and large casks. It's deep in colour and shows lush, meaty aromas that at present lack finesse. It's very opulent and savoury on the palate, assertive without being astringent, and has imposing balance and length. Drink 2021 - 2038

Serralunga d’Alba. Just mid ruby. Dark and brooding nose of great depth. Generous and mouth-filling fruit and plenty of acidity adding freshness. A big layer of finely stitched tannins adds structure to the ripe fruit. Concentrated and deep. Drink 2022-2034 (WS)

Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024
Made from half a hectare of superbly positioned vines just below the famous Clos de la Maréchale, this is a highly fragrant cuvée with captivating floral notes, which Pauline likens to blackcurrant blossom, and aromas of wild strawberry. Bright, pretty and elegant, the palate shows sweet red cherry fruit upfront, fine-grained, supple tannins and a driving mineral tension.

This is the one red that I thought about all week. I could not get its flavour and poise out of my mind. It captures Pinot Noir's beauty without adding any excess in any department – perfume, flavour, finish, balance, oak, acidity, juiciness or weight. It is pinpoint accurate in every way, and it will not fall over for six or seven years either, so get in quick. This is a genuine discovery...

Juicy and sweet. Raspberries, squelching with fruit and juice. Playful but with graceful structure and a peppery poufff at the end.

The 2015 Vosne Romanee Villages has a very pure, feminine bouquet, vivid morello cherry intermingling with crushed strawberry and cold black slate. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry with tensile tannin, what you might call an "athletic" village cru with no fatness, rather streamlined and tensile. It is completed by a long, mineral-driven finish that is almost worthy of a premier cru. This is excellent. Drink Date 2018 - 2025

Enough wood to remark upon frames an expressive and well-layered nose of Asian-style tea, plum, violet and a lovely array of spice elements. The succulent and caressing medium-bodied flavors possess fine mid-palate concentration that buffers the moderately firm tannins shaping the balanced and delicious finale. This too is very good for its level. Oustanding. Drink 2022+

Lighter in colour with a slightly less intense purple. There seems to be greater finesse in the Clos de Bèze, compared to the Chambertin. There is a lighter touch to the texture, a fresher red berry fruit, more in alpine strawberries, excellent persistence, less the hand of the winemaker. Drink from 2028-2036.

The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru possesses mainly red berry fruit, touches of pressed rose petal, incense and peony. The palate is medium-bodied with quite supple tannins, fine acidity, lightly spiced, candied orange peel and blood orange. This will vie with the Chambertin as Rebourseau's best offering in 2021. Drink 2025-2045.

The vines planted between 1927 and 1973 are used for this cuvée. It has a rich deep purple colour, with a reductive note on the nose. It is easy to pick up the quality though. A few black notes on top of the main core of fresh red raspberry, an excellent mineral thread through the middle and very good length. This is going to need time but the Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes 2021 from Rebourseau will be spectacular. Drink from 2028-2038.

The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru shows some wood on the nose that slightly obscures the terroir profile. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry, with supple tannins. Not the most complex Charmes Chambertin, though it has an attractive plummy finish. Drink 2025-2037

Not a vineyard which likes great extraction, so what to do? They taste every day during the fermentation to see how it is progressing. An even purple, plenty of raspberry fruit some elegance along with tensile strength, good fruit acid balance but there is not much sense of place here, more of vinification Drink from 2027-2031.
