En Primeur | Burghound Recommends

Although the field of serious Burgundy critics is becoming ever more crowded, Allen Meadows (Burghound) still stands out as the original and the best. So, when he releases his review of a new vintage it is worth sitting up and taking notice. He is positively rapturous, commenting that the 2019 wines are: “Ripe, fresh, concentrated and very high-quality.” If you have not yet dipped a toe in the fabulous Burgundy 2019 pool, now is the moment.

The 2021 Napanook is composed of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly emerges from the glass with expressive notes of blackcurrant pastilles, wild blueberries, and Morello cherries leading to an undercurrent of rosebud tea, cinnamon stick, and tilled soil with a waft of charcoal. The rich, concentrated, full-bodied palate delivers waves of black and blue fruit preserves supported by velvety tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing long and spicy. 3,000 cases were made. A more spectacular style, this has concentrated rich dark currant and cassis fruits, with underlying flavours of fresh tobacco and liquorice. Superbly intense, brimming with fruit which is wrapped around some exciting muscle and tannic core. Very long indeed and impressive.

Superbly intense, brimming with fruit which is wrapped around some exciting muscle and tannic core. Very long indeed and impressive.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 96

The 2020 Pichon Baron has a delineated, slightly conservative but brilliantly focused bouquet that opens gloriously with time in the glass: black cherries, blueberry and cassis tinged with graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent and juicy tannins that disguise the structure underneath. There's a real peacock's tail on this Pauillac, and it's a long-term prospect. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

  • Neal Martin, December 2022, Score: 97

As I found before, the 2020 Pichon Baron takes a while to open in the glass. Finally, it offers enticing blackberry and boysenberry fruit, peony and iris flower, hints of graphite and black truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, again, displaying outstanding symmetry and focus, fresh as a daisy with a strong and mineral-driven finish. Christian Seely and his team have overseen a splendid Pichon Baron for the ages. Blue-blooded Pauillac. Drink 2028-2050

  • Neal Martin, May 2021, Score: 95-97

The 2020 Pichon Baron underwent an early picking with relatively low yields. A blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot, it has a very tight nose at first that demands 15–20 minute coaxing in the glass. It eventually reveals enticing blackberries, blueberries and hints of balsamic and undergrowth, all very precise; crushed rock scents surface with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine-grained tannins and touches of hoisin toward a dense but structured finish of unerring symmetry. Tasted from test tube sample and regular 75cl bottle. Drink 2028 - 2050

  • Antonio Galloni, December 2022, Score: 98

The 2020 Pichon Baron is every bit as magnificent as it was en primeur. A wine of vertical intensity and explosive power, the 2020 offers up an exotic mix of dark red/black fruit, espresso, licorice, menthol, gravel and dried herbs. This potent, driving Pauillac needs time to come together. It marries the fruit intensity of a warm year with the driving energy of a cool year. The 2020 is a gorgeous Pichon Baron. Drink 2028-2050

  • Antonio Galloni, June 2021, Score: 96-98

The 2020 Pichon Baron is utterly breathtaking, and also one of the very best young vintages I have tasted here. An exotic mélange of red cherry, mint, rose petal and blood orange comes alive in the glass. More than anything, though, the Pichon-Baron possesses remarkable energy and vibrancy that builds to an intense, beautifully focused finish. This is hands down one of the most impressive wines of 2020. Superb. Drink 2035 - 2055

  • Wine Advocate, May 2021, Score: 95-97+

The 2020 Pichon-Longueville Baron is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot aging for an estimated 18 months in French oak barrels, 70% new. The production of the grand vin represents 48% of the harvest this year. Opaque purple-black in color, it comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant notions of blackberry pie, preserved plums and crème de cassis, plus suggestions of Chinese five spice, chocolate mint, graphite and cedar chest with a touch of violets. The medium-bodied palate is built like a brick house, featuring firm, ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness to support the taut, muscular black fruits, finishing long and spicy. Drink 2027-2052

  • Decanter, May 2021, Score: 96

Intense, concentrated, rippling with power while still delivering finesse. A muscular Pichon Baron, layered with liquorice and chocolate shavings. Unmistakably Pauillac, and hugely Cabernet dominant, with savoury spice notes of grilled cumin and the same muscular, saline-backed tannins that you find in Les Griffons, just here with more definition and depth. 70% new oak for 18 months, 48% of overall production. Harvest September 14 to 30. Yields on the old vines here just above 30hl/ha. Drin 2029-2048

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2021, Score: 18.5

As expected Cabernet leads the way in this blend and it is the only red in this particular family to feature this grape in the driving seat. For this reason, it has a markedly more commanding nose and stance on the palate. Small berries make for a deep, dark colour and alongside the intensity of the perfume and palate one might expect to experience a markedly tannic finish, but no. This is a genteel, honed wine with a long, lithe finish and a discreet, savoury kick on the back of the palate and this makes me think that it might start to drink a little sooner than the more structured 2018 vintage. A shade lighter, a touch more expressive and silky, this is a suave Pichon Baron with restraint offset with typical distinction and I expect it to blossom in a decade and then hold well into the future.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2021, Score: 18

Deep crimson hue. Powerful and reserved, the nose dark and restrained with just a nip of vanilla oak and spice. Dense, firm and persistent on the palate, a massive tannic frame heightened by acidity. Powerful and brooding. Will definitely need time. (JL) 13.7%. Drink 2030 – 2050

  • Jeb Dunnuck, May 2021, Score: 96-98

The inky hued 2020 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron checks in as a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot that spent 18 months in 70% new barrels. It's a dense, rich, powerful 2020 offering loads of pure cassis and almost blue fruits as well as full-bodied richness, a round, lush, incredibly sexy texture, sweet tannins, and ample classic Pauillac lead pencil, tobacco, and violet aromas and flavors. It's unquestionably in the same ballpark as the 2015, 2016, and 2018, and given its sweet tannins and beautifully integrated acidity, it should have some up-front appeal as well, yet still age at a glacier pace.

  • Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021, Score: 97-99

Richly colored with purple around the edges the wine struts its creme de cassis, tobacco, cigar box, earthy, forest floor and peppery spice nose with ease. On the palate the wine is round, polished, sweet, fresh, ripe, long and elegant. This is a refined, classic, potentially forward vintage of Pichon Baron that should start showing quite well with just a decade of aging. The wine was made from blending 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot, 13.6% ABV. Yields were only 33 hectoliters per hectare.

Rather gentlemen's-club-like with its note of leather and very dry, tannic finish. • Matthew Jukes, April 2021, Score: 17.5+

Like the second wine, Le Dragon, this is a monolithic wine with a stern character and a pleasant violet-themed perfume. The fruit is calm, dry and centred but there is little obvious exoticism or flair. A touch closed and firm, with a powerful core of alcohol under the bonnet, I imagine that we will need to wait for a decade for this wine to begin to open up and soften out and the oak, while not too pungent, is certainly preventing more fragrant tones from expressing themselves. Tense but worth waiting for, this is a fascinating wine and one which will be sure to evolve slowly and with determination.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2021, Score: 16.5++

Not in the rich camp but expressive in its own style. 15.4% Drink 2026 – 2040

A big, velvety textured wine, especially in the vintage, the 2020 Château Quintus offers a gorgeous array of pure crème de cassis and black raspberry fruits as well as leafy herbs, graphite, and chocolate. These all carry to a full-bodied Saint-Emilion with a round, mouth-filling texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. This estate has been firing on all cylinders of late, and this should be in the same realm as the 2016, 2018, and I suspect, the 2019.

A yield of 40 hl/ha. 14 to 18 months ageing in underground limestone cellars. 2021 sees 20 years of the Cuvelier family at Clos Fourtet and this is an excellent wine to showcase what a brilliant job they have done here. Score could go higher after barrel ageing. Drink 2028-2044

  • Matthew Jukes, May 2021, Score: 17.5+

While there is seemingly a forest of oak standing in front of the fruit this is still a forcefully fruity and heady wine with both black fruit and also blueberry tones in the mix. There are plum and mulberry nuances, too, which add to the complexity, but much of this exuberance is shut down by the earthy tannins which swarm the palate and dry everything out. This will be a medium to long-term wine and the fruit is reeling from the battering it is taking from the oak, but the fruit will win through given time.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2021, Score: 17

One of the biggest successes on the upper plateau is the 2020 Château Clos Fourtet, and it does everything right in the vintage. A magical, perfumed bouquet of red plums, black cherries, white truffle, and white flowers just screams Saint-Emilion, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, flawless overall balance, a dense mid-palate, and a liqueur of rocks-like minerality on the palate. Building incrementally with time in the glass, this is thrilling stuff that should offer some up-front appeal in its youth yet benefit from 7-8 years in the cellar and keep for 30 years or more. Bravo! The blend is 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Cabernet Franc that’s still resting in 50% new French oak.

  • Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021, Score: 96-98

Dark garnet in color, the wine gets your attention quickly with its licorice, smoke, dark cocoa, chalk and plummy aromas. Pure silk and velvet on the palate, with a fabulous sense of purity in the fruits, lift, length, richness, concentration and minerality. This is clearly a top vintage for Clos Fourtet that will age for decades. The wine was made from blending 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% ABV.

  • Neal Martin, March 2018, Score: 91

The Ausone 2013 was one of the superior wines from the challenging growing season like few others. I remember Pauline Vauthier telling me that it was thanks to 10 hot days in July that any greenness was eradicated. From a bottle tasted in Bordeaux, it repeated its performance from barrel. The bouquet is simple for Ausone, still driven by the Merlot rather than the Cabernet Franc, fleshy and quite rounded on the palate with impressive freshness, if not quite delivering the complexity and sensuality one often finds with Ausone.

  • Neal Martin, April 2014, Score: 91-93

The Ausone 2013 is a blend of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot, picked from 2 to 6 October. Pauline Vauthier told me that the 10 days in July burnt away the pyrazine notes however, there is just half the usual production at 9,000 bottles. Interestingly, the Merlot character comes through more prominently on the nose that feels just a little monochromatic compared to recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy entry, the acidity (pH 3.55) noticeable. The finish has a citrus freshness, not as complex as recent vintages but showing admirable persistency. This is a commendable effort in the context of the vintage.

  • Robert Parker, August 2014, Score: 93-95

Probably the wine of the vintage, once again. Only 9,000 bottles of the 2013 Ausone were produced, as crop size was 50% of normal. However, proprietor Alain Vauthier and his daughter certainly have proven a truly great wine can be produced in some of the most trying conditions Bordeaux wine producers have had to deal with over the last 20 years. Yields were only 22 hectoliters per hectare and the final blend was 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot. The haunting aromas of wet rocks, spring flowers, blue and black fruits and forest floor are followed by an incredibly dense, attractive wine with sweet tannin, stunning concentration and texture, medium body and a depth that is essentially unreal in a vintage such as this. The wine is a superb example of great winemaking under the most difficult circumstances. Unlike more recent Ausones, this should be reasonably drinkable in 5-6 years and yet be capable of lasting 25-30. Drink: 2019 - 2049

  • James Suckling, April 2014, Score: 91-92

A balanced red for the vintage with a solid core of fruit and a dense palate. Silky tannins and stylish character. Full body with a outstanding intensity and finesse for the vintage. Hazelnut and minerals. Half the normal production.

  • Decanter, April 2014, Score: 92

Follows the style of 2012. Accent on the fruit. Pure, elegant and digestible. Less density than top years but long, fine tannins for ageing. Drink: 2020-2038

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2014, Score: 18+

Quite marked by oak and while richer and fruitier than the second wine Chapelle this is a very tight and closed Ausone on the finish. It’s also a little greener and more sour and firm than expected in this vintage. When it all settles down this will be a delicate, long-lived Ausone with grace and slender, floral fruit as opposed to a powerhouse. A typical but classical and composed. I like this shape of wine enormously and a committed collector should not swerve this vintage because it offers another facet in the glittering Ausone firmament.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2014, Score: 17.5+

Deep blackcurrant fruit, supple tannins on the palate that grip the finish. A smidgen more concentration than their Chapelle, but it doesn’t scale the heights that you might hope for. That’s not to say it isn’t good – it is very delicious – but the quality is constrained by the vintage. (RH)

  • Tim Atkin, April 2014, Score: 94

For Ausone, which can be closed and compact in its youth, this is an appealingly forward wine. But the subtle use of oak, fine tannins and fruit weight, even in a lesser year, are typical of the château. The freshness and grassiness of the 55% Cabernet Franc make a significant contribution to the balance of the wine. 2018-26

The Suchots has a rather clayey entry with some white Burgundy characteristics: white peach and a touch of peach skin. The palate has a fleshy entry, brimming full of ripe strawberry and raspberry fruits with a rounded, harmonious plush finish. Impressive. Tasted January 2011.

  • Burghound, April 2011

This is slightly riper and exceptionally spicy with plum and black berry liqueur aromas complementing silky and opulent medium-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract that buffers the firm structural elements on the balanced, focused and impressively persistent finale. 2021+.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, February 2025

A worthy contender for one of the wines of the vintage, the 2020 opens with a burst of dark cherry, wild berries and clove. There is an incredible intensity to the fruit yet the tannins are sweet, round and pliant. With no Riserva produced in 2020 all of the juice from the designated Riserva vineyard known as Vigna Vecchia Mercatale, has gone into the straight Brunello this year adding extra depth and accentuating the quality of this fantastic wine. An unmissable Brunello that can be approached relatively early but will develop further over 10 years.

  • Eric Guido, Vinous, November 2024, Score: 95

A burst of black cherries and cloves gives way to shavings of cedar and lifting hints of mentholated herbs as the dynamic 2020 Brunello di Montalcino comes to life in the glass. This is soothingly round and pliant with an inner sweetness up front and crisp wild berry fruits that cascade across the palate. It's structured and firm, yet its tannins are sweet and round, tapering off with a pleasantly bitter tinge of blackberry and sour citrus. The 2020 aims to please and it is already incredibly approachable today. With no Riserva produced in 2020, all of the juice from Vigna Vecchia Mercatale was used to bolster this spectacular Brunello.

  • Jancis Robinson, October 2024, Score: 17+

Mid ruby with orange tinges. Balsamic nose with eucalyptus-oil notes and cigar-box hints. Full, lush cherry-fruit palate with polished yet gripping tannins. Juicy, long and hedonistic yet still a little embryonic. (WS)

  • AF, January 2025, Score: 95

Pouring a jeweled red/ruby color, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino is attractive and layered on the nose, with pure notes of red cherries, sweet Mediterranean herbs, crushed roses, and mossy earth. Medium-bodied, it brings lovely energy to the palate and is upfront with mouthwatering salty notes, snappy ripe acidity, and a clean, balanced finish, with even ripeness and stone-fruited notes of apricot on the back palate. This highly appealing Brunello is hard to resist now but likely has the ability to go the long haul over the coming 15-20 years.

You could get lost just in the alluring aromas of plum, fragrant blue flower, freshly mown hay, forest floor and leather on the beautiful 2020 Brunello from Canalicchio di Sopra. It’s young, fresh, elegantly structured and delicious, delivering layers of Marasca cherry, raspberry, star anise and dried rosemary enveloped in velvety tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced.

  • Monica Larner, November 2024, Score: 93+

This is a standout wine that marries red and purple fruit flavors with tangy hints of green curry leaf, rhubarb and sweet earth. The Canalicchio di Sopra 2020 Brunello di Montalcino carries a distinct signature that recalls not only the Sangiovese grape but a sense of place. You can mistake this for nothing but a Brunello. The vintage manages power and aromatic intensity but is also magically leaner and definitely more elegant in terms of mouthfeel. The immediate results are perhaps more accessible and also quite pleasurable now in this 41,362-bottle release.

The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and good balance and grip. This is a classic, tobacco- and graphite-driven Pauillac with a very persistent finish. There is something regal about this Les Forts de Latour, one of the finest vintages in recent years. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting.

  • Antonio Galloni, January 2022, Score: 96

The 2016 Les Forts de Latour is the clear highlight among these new releases from Latour. The first thing that is evident about the 2016 is the pedigree of the vintage. Undisputedly great. Readers will find a potent, dark Forts de Latour endowed with massive concentration and tons of depth. The 2016 won't be ready to drink anytime soon, but it holds tons of promise. Hints of gravel, sage, licorice and pencil shavings linger. The 2016 was impressive a few years ago. It is even better today.

  • Wine Advocate, November 2018, Score: 95

Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Les Forts de Latour opens with cinnamon stick, cloves and star anise scents with hints of crème de cassis, kirsch, wild blueberries and hints of black tea and violets. Medium to full-bodied, it has very firm, grainy tannins and is wonderfully intense with layers of bright fruit and loads of red berry sparks, finishing long and minerally. This is a superb showing for Les Forts and I would not be at all surprised if it far exceeds my conservative drinking window estimation!

This is a little paler in colour than 1er Cru Cros Parantoux and has a more open aroma. There is a sophisticated touch of malty oak reduction overlaying the beautiful fruit tones. The palate is supremely elegant, and the tannins show the finesse of the Richebourg site, whose pliant fruit and quiet power suit the 2017 vintage style with extraordinary success. As is the case with the greatest of grands crus, its layers unfurl in magnificent splendour. That it merely hints at its future greatness right now bodes for a truly exciting maturation.

The 2017 Richebourg Grand Cru has a much more expressive and open bouquet compared directly with the Cros Parantoux: red berry fruit, undergrowth, crushed stone, tobacco and plenty of ground pebbles here. This is wonderfully detailed. The medium-bodied palate delivers fine-grained tannin. Not as deep as other vintages of Richebourg that I have encountered from the domaine, being lighter on its feet, yet it still displays good grip and a hint of graphite that lingers on the finish. Excellent. 2024 - 2045

This too is firmly reduced though the supporting wood is less visible. There is impressive intensity to the equally sleek big-bodied flavors that possess a gorgeous mouthfeel thanks once again to the plentiful sappy dry extract that coats the mouth on the hugely long and impeccably well-balanced finale. Like the Cros, this very stylish and classy effort will also need to develop better depth though the underlying material is present for that to occur. Drink 2035+

By contrast to the ‘happy grandpa’ which is the harmonious and gregarious 2008 vintage of this wine, the 2010 is a very different creature. Upright and yet ever so slightly gnarled, this is a grand wine which still retains vigour and verve. While 2008 might be relaxing on the verandah in its slippers, regaling us with lovely old reminiscences, 2010 is charging around in a droptop with his salt and pepper bouffant fluttering in the breeze. This is a seriously exciting wine with undoubted class and reverence, but there is energy and dynamism here which hints at a much younger creation. Drinking now, but able to hold for a further two decades, there is unbelievable scale and phenomenal depth here balanced perfectly with and exquisite detail, poise and élan. I have tasted this wine on two occasions and each time the aftertaste has lasted all day on my senses. It is one of the most remarkable wines of 2020. Drink now – 2040

I wrote the rather baffling expression, ‘beyond minerality’, when I first tasted this wine. This was a knee jerk reaction to the elemental force contained in this fruit coupled with the unquestionable, but also the unfathomable impact that the ancient slate fermenters have on its expression. If you haven’t already, you must read the story of this magical ‘equipment’ from the long-derelict winery into which Ox has breathed life. The colour alone is absurd – it is Mordor in a glass. The earth and spice remind me of only one other wine on earth – Tempier’s Cabassaou and so I opened up a bottle of this wine, on the spot, to compare to 2018 Slate and the attitude, nobility and stance were identical. Sanguineous, vampiric, epically layered and super-fine this is a phenomenal release. While the nose and mid-palate are truly magnificent in their measured delivery, the trademark Ox finish arrives, freshening the palate and ending with ‘happy ever after’ purity and calm. As you will see by my words and also my score this is a deeply impressive wine. Drink 2022 – 2030

A true expression of the extreme beauty of their exceptional terroir. This is the most elegant and refined vintage I have seen of this wine. With ultra-refined tannin, the wine is dry, very clean, not minty at all, with very good tension and length, with a chalky, tasty, almost salty finish. With ultra-refined tannin, the wine is dry, very clean, not minty at all, with very good tension and length, with a chalky, tasty, almost salty finish. Of course, the classical notes of cedar wood, black peppercorns and tobacco are there, but in a very subtle way. Super elegant. Drinking 2017-2027

  • Goedhuis, December 2022

The family holding is a substantial 1.5 hectares in a wonderful location within the Chambolle Musigny sector of the appellation. The natural sweetness and richness in volume made this vineyard the perfect candidate to have 15% whole bunches and go through its élevage in 80% new oak. A voluptuous style, showing off excellent ripeness of brooding dark berry fruits. Silky in texture, glycerol and layered dark forest flavours. The graceful tannins sit comfortably below the volume of fruit and a sensation of toasted oak spice provides an added attraction and nuance.

  • Neal Martin, January 2023, Score: 92-94

The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is matured in 80% new oak with 15% whole bunches. It has a relatively light nose for this climat (though in keeping with several others encountered.) Fine delineation, nicely focused but just missing a bit of sensuality. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, moderate weight, pretty red berry fruit laced with desiccated orange peel and marmalade, gentle and harmonious on the finish. Fine. Drink 2025-2045. 92 - 94 points.

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2022, Score: 93-95

A medium deep crimson in colour. The nose suggests a fair weight of fruit but does not quite want to give it up. Complete, though, on the palate with that Chambolle/Morey dichotomy that adds an earthy weight to Bonnes Mares. A little iron rich touch too. Rather satisfying. The small admixture of whole bunches adds complexity. Drink from 2027-2034.
