Goedhuis, December 2022
The 2021 shows the more traditional characters of this famous Grand Cru, with its sense of sturdy muscle. Autumnal berry fruits, there is a bulk and fullness to the wine, the tannins are keen to make their presence known, but there is plenty of dense fruit to support their makeup. Be patient and this will be brilliant. Drink 2027 - 2050

The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a vibrant nose with dark berry fruit, touches of sea cave/oyster shell. This is nicely focused and intellectual. Pretty, airy and cool red berry scents are laced with floral and earth nuances where the latter are picked up by the nicely rich, delicious and quite vibrant broadshouldered flavors that deliver excellent length on the firm, youthfully austere and balanced finish that is noticeably firmer. This will need at least some forbearance as it’s quite tightly wound at present. Drink 2036+

70% crop achieved, so perhaps the helicopter treatment worked. A deeper dense purple, with a serious concentration of fruit here. The advantage of the vines which were less ravaged. Then darker fruit, almost a chocolate nose, a little foursquare as per its terroir, small waves of darker fruit coming through behind, a dark plum for example, then an evenly balanced finish between fruit, tannin and acidity. Drink from 2030-2040.

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru takes time to really cohere on the nose, more backward than recent vintages, sultry even. This seems to lean more towards black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with strict tannins. There's backbone here, assertiveness, yet without the density or opulence that has come to define Cathiard's style, so very different. This will require some time in bottle but will have much to offer. Drink 2025-2048

Mid crimson purple. Quite a restrained nose, though the quality of the vineyard really begins to merge afterwards on the palate. Not the most flamboyant, a little more savoury, a little less lush but with a fine bone structure. A Malconsorts for the medium term. This is a fine wine, but without the lush glories of the grandest Malconsorts. Drink from 2026-2033.

The 2018 d'Armailhac is lifted, floral and nicely focused, although a touch closed today. Bright red cherry and floral notes add nuance throughout. Medium in body and fresh, the 2018 has quite a bit of aromatic depth from the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, which helps hide the 14.5% alcohol nicely. Yields were just 32 hectoliters per hectare as opposed to 42-46, which is the norm. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Tasted two times.

The 2018 D'Armailhac (14.5% alcohol) is composed of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, harvested September 12 to October 3. Deep garnet-purple colored, it reveals a very fruity nose of crushed blackberries, warm black cherries and mulberries plus hints of potpourri, spice cake and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, the decadent palate delivers loads of black berry layers and a firm, grainy frame with underlying freshness and an earthy finish. Wonderfully opulent D’Armailhac!

Decanter, April 2019, Score: 94
This is clearly one of the most concentrated d’Armailhacs that has been produced in recent decades owing to the extremely small and concentrated berries, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested at the end of the growing season. It’s also one of the best, with clear personality and power, and although still the least complex of the three Pauillacs in the Mouton stable, it should offer the best value giving a ton of rich fruit and cigar box frisson. 5% Petit Verdot makes up the blend. 3.7pH. Tasted several times – always with the same impression. Drinking Window 2026 - 2040

Matthew Jukes, April 2019, Score: 17.5+
Very commanding and robustly fruited, this is a dense, velvety d’Armailhac with structure and layers of plum and chocolate fruit. Not overly complex but certainly luxurious and imposing this is a style of wine which will appeal to all palates thanks to its generosity and depth of flavour. There is certainly enough grip to allow this wine to expand in time and while the finish is quite tart, this will inevitably fade quickly.

Black core. Scented with cassis and cassis leaf, lightly cedary. (This last is, unusually, a rare descriptor in this vintage.) Aromatic but not as much as Duhart-Milon tasted just after. The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru offers lilting red berry fruit laced with cola and crushed stone on the nose, although I would have liked more presence and intensity at this stage. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin and quite masculine in style. The rather simple finish needs more mineralité. Personally, I prefer some of the Premier Crus from the domaine this year. Maybe this just did not shine on the day. 2021 - 2032

A pretty, cool and restrained nose reluctantly offers up notes of red currant, earth, humus and a hint of violet, all of which is trimmed in a discreet application of wood. The vibrant and detailed flavors are not especially concentrated (though they're certainly not dilute) but I like the punch plus the moderately austere finish is more refined than it typically is. Solid if not sensational quality here. Drink 2032+

Wine Advocate, January 2019, Score: 91+93+
Aromas of wild berries, cassis, incense, smoked duck and rose hip introduce the 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, a full-bodied, ample and layered wine that's quite charming and open-knit by the standards of Clos Vougeout and even by the standards of this routinely elegant cuvée. Framed by fine-grained tannins, it's pure, fleshy and elegant, and it should shine at a comparatively early age.

A menthol top note is present on the spicy dark cherry, cassis and poached plum-suffused nose. There is once again a very rounded and seductive texture to the delicious medium-bodied flavors that juxtapose somewhat with the attenuated and mildly lean finish that also flashes a touch of dryness. This is sufficiently firm to require at least a decade to resolve the tannins and I suspect that during that time the dryness will eventually palliate. Drink: 2030+

(from a .30 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines that sit directly behind the cuvérie). Here the wood is a bit more prominent though not so much as to override the very spicy and complex array of game, red and dark currant and pungent earth aromas. There is excellent volume and intensity to the concentrated and once again overtly muscular big-bodied flavors that possess plenty of power, punch and impressive scale, but here too the finish is slightly edgy and drying. Goedhuis, January 2011
A beautiful Clos de Bèze that has claimed her throne in 2009. Expressive and dense, there is an incredible amount of charm here that penetrates and lavishes the palate in an explosive core of sweet juicy fruit and fine velvety tannins. Exceptionally well done.

This was sufficiently reduced to hide everything but the wood though its influence on the palate was considerably less if not invisible. The rich, minerally and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors possess a subtle minerality that continues onto the mouth coating finish where the wood resurfaces. I suspect that this reasonably wellbalanced effort will always display some wood influence but not enough to affect the finishing texture. 2024+.

The 2020 Chambertin Grand Cru, which contains 80% whole bunch and had not been racked, has a beautifully-defined bouquet with red and black fruit, undergrowth, hints of tobacco and pressed rose petals. Very focucsed. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, very harmonious with a pastille-like purity on the finish. Very classy and composed.

A restrained and intensely floral-suffused nose is reticent to the point of being brooding and only grudgingly provides glimpses of fresh dark berries and sauvage whiffs. The precise, highly energetic and tautly muscular flavors possess that wonderful sense of underlying tension that becomes even more apparent on the mineral-driven, youthfully austere and equally long finale. This is a classic and wonderfully promising Chambertin that in magnum format should age as long as anyone would reasonably care to wait. Don't miss! Drink 2042+

Not racked. Fine heady mid purple, the sample is slightly more evolved, with weight and oak and depth, detail to follow. This is a sound rendition though of the majesty of Chambertin, and may well emerge to earn a higher rating. Magnums only.

A perfumed and extremely pretty nose features notes of spiced plum, violet, rose petal, exotic tea and moderate wood influence. The gorgeously textured medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality on the succulent but punchy and powerful finish that flashes a touch of youthful austerity. This too is mostly impressive and is a wine that is also built for extended cellaring yet it's not so structured that it couldn't be approached after 7 to 8 years or so. Drink 2034+

This is the second 100-point Vigna Le Rocche, following the 2015. What the former had in intensity of fruit and transparency, this has in structure and power. The purity of fruit is sensational in this young Barolo, offering blackberries, black truffle and iron. Rust too. This is so tannic and powerful with incredible structure. This may be the most structured Barolo from Bruno Giacosa I have ever tasted as a young wine. Speechless. Full-bodied and so intense, yet it remains fresh and agile. Traditional in every sense of the word, but this is clear and clean. A classic in the making. It will be in the market January 2022. Leave this for at least six to eight years. Try in 2027. Goedhuis, June 2020, Score: 98-99
Shining radiant purple colour. Despite hints of summer pudding and Morello cherry, it’s clear there is plenty more to come. In the palate this initial discretion gives way to a firework of sensations, it really is quite fabulous. There is a breadth of rich fruit and the wine progressively fills out in the palate thanks to its Cabernet Sauvignon (90%) substance. It balances the Cabernet’s directness, with an appealing creaminess. A very full wine with wonderful fruit concentration and a fine degree of freshness. There is nothing ostentatious about this wine, comfortable in its own skin and fully aware of its breeding. Top class.

Neal Martin, June 2020, Score: 96-98
The 2019 Château Margaux, like many other top names, was tasted in 12-hour intervals after opening. Like the Pavillon Rouge, it is tightly-wound on the nose initially and it is really only after 12-hours that it begins to motor, revealing enticing scents of blackberry, briary, seaweed and crushed stone, perhaps less florality, less violet-inspired aromas compared to previous vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with very lithe tannins that disguise the considerable backbone of this First Growth. This is imbued with a sense of linearity and focus, a strictness that gradually gives way to more sensuality. It is a beautifully proportioned Château Margaux, somehow "effortless", fanning out nonchalantly with residues of white pepper and fresh tobacco on the finish. Outstanding. Drink 2029-2065

Antonio Galloni, June 2020, Score: 98-100
The 2019 Margaux is a total showstopper. A thrilling wine that melds together the textural intensity of the year with striking vibrancy, Margaux is just stunning. All the classic Margaux signatures are amplified in such dramatic fashion. The 2019 is a wine of pure and total sensuality. A second sample that arrived very late after having been stuck in customs was shockingly vibrant when I tasted it out of curiosity. I couldn't help myself. In the early going, Margaux is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Don't miss it. Estate Manager Philippe Bascaules and his team turned out two spectacular wines in 2019. Note: I did not taste the Pavillon Blanc, as the estate thought it was too fragile to ship. Bascaules describes 2019 as an easy vintage. Flowering was normal and set was good. Yields came in at a healthy 47 hectoliters per hectare, more than 2017 or 2018, the summer heat spikes notwithstanding. Bascaules opted to pick the Merlot early and gave those lots a very gentle extractions at low temperatures, whereas the Cabernet Sauvignon vinifications were a much more typical 20-22 days at 28-30 degrees Celsius. In tasting, the 2019s have more tannins than any other vintage, with the exception of 2018, and yet the wines don't show that at all.

Wine Advocate, June 2020, Score: 97-100
The 2019 Château Margaux is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, accounting for 37% of the crop. The alcohol came in at 13.9%, the IPT was 75, and the pH was 3.66. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose begins with intense scents of crushed blackberries, warm cassis and plum preserves before fanning out into a whole array of floral, exotic spice and earth scents: iris, red roses, star anise, cassis, tilled soil, moss-covered bark and black truffles, with an emerging waft of crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate quivers with energy, emitting loads of mineral sparks, featuring bold freshness and fantastically ripe, finely grained tannins to support the delicate, perfumed layers, finishing very long and wonderfully poised. The juxtaposition between the acidity and the richness in this Château Margaux is just extraordinary!

The fantastic quality of the cabernet sauvignon really comes through here with black currant, blueberry and raspberry character. It’s full-bodied with such tightness. It’s so beautiful in the center palate. The tannins are wonderfully blended into the wine and flow across the palate. Rather leaner and racy. Ethereal. 37% of the production and 90% cabernet sauvignon, 7% merlot, 2% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.

Decanter, June 2020, Score: 98
This expands sideways, vertically and downwards, with a creamy mid palate and a rose petal, peony, raspberry and cassis collision on the nose. This is chewy in its tannic structure, full on and yet delicate and sappy. Fresh, elegant, perfumed and concentrated - clearly will age for decades. This is close in character to the 2009 or 2015, two exceptional vintages at Margaux and classic to the graceful yet concentrated signature of the property. 1% Petit Verdot to complete the blend, 100% new oak although barely discernible already. 37% of overall production in the 1st wine this year. Jancis Robinson, June 2020, Score: 18.5
Deep colour to the rim. Super fragrance, the aromas pure and persistent with typical Cabernet cassis and graphite notes. Rich and full across the palate but definitely more freshness than the Pavillon. Plentiful tannins provide the drive but absolutely no aggression. Aromatic freshness on the finish aids persistence and length. (JL) Drink 2030 – 2050

Wine Cellar Insider, June 2020, Score: 98-100
Dark garnet with purple accents in the hue tells you the wine going to be concentrated. The nose, with its showy aromatic display of lilacs, roses, herbs, cigar box, blackberries, dark red pit fruits, gun powder and violets informs you the wine is complex. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, silky, and seductive. It starts off discreetly before moving to its sexy side. The layers of sweet, fresh, vibrant, black and red fruit come on strong and keep on going long after the wine has left the glass. The wine blends 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, reaching 13.9% alcohol. The Grand Vin was produced using only 37% of the harvest. Picking took place September 18 - October 10, making this a fairly leisurely harvest.

Antonio Galloni, Febuary 2022, Score: 99
The 2019 Château Margaux possesses off the charts richness to go along with plush contours and mind-blowing balance. All the elements are so wonderfully woven together. It's as if all the Château Margaux signatures are dialed up to eleven, but without losing any of the classic Margaux character. The purity of the red-toned fruit is just breathtaking. The Merlot was picked early, but then rain during harvest delayed the ripening of the Cabernets, which turned out to be a huge advantage.

Neal Martin, January 2023, Score: 97+
The 2019 Château Margaux is slightly more low-key than its peers, but very precise. Crushed rocks infuse the black fruit, quite transparent and very terroir driven. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, and fine structure. Dense and weighty, with a sapid finish that doesn't quite have same effortless ease as its peers. Maybe this is hiding something up its sleeve? (When its identity is revealed, the answer is affirmative.) Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.2029-2069

Wine Advocate, April 2022, Score: 100
Is the 2019 Château Margaux the wine of the vintage? A strong case in its favor could certainly be made. Soaring from the glass with aromas of blackberries, raspberries, rose petals, violets, pencil shavings and vine smoke, it's full-bodied, layered and sensual, with a strikingly vibrant core of fruit that's framed by ripe, powdery tannins and bright acids, concluding with a penetrating, mouthwateringly saline finish of almost interminable duration. Complex, elegant and utterly compelling, this is a brilliant Bordeaux that anyone with the requisite disposable income is going to want to own. Drink 2029 - 2069. 100 points. There is just one barrel of the 2021 Montrachet Grand Cru this year. This oak comes through quite strongly at the moment, especially compared to the Chevalier alongside, though there is obviously real power and intensity here. The palate is very well-balanced and multi-layered with gorgeous yellow fruit, crushed stone and hints of lemongrass toward the finish. This seems to really fill the mouth with flavour, though it deserves four to five years in bottle. Maybe I just prefer the more nuanced Chevalier. Drink 2030-2060

Comment: "Dont miss!"A positively kaleidoscopic and utterly knockout nose featuring exuberant Vosne-style spicy black fruit and a panoply of underlying nuances including anise, clove, minerals, underbrush, warm earth and smoke plus a hint of menthol introduce reserved, even cool medium full flavors that are like silk on the palate though the hugely long finish tightens up in a real rush. This is really quite fine and less youthfully austere than it usually is. A stunner with that wonderful character of inner mouth perfume that the great wines always have and built for the long haul. Note: like the Reignots, this too has benefited from the additional time in barrel and my original score was a bit too conservative.

Packaged in its distinctive red label, the 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is a rich and profound wine with incredible depth and dimension. Bruna Giacosa skipped over the 2015 vintage because she felt that the fruit was not poised for long aging. From the 2014 vintage, we jump to this 2016 expression, a wine that Bruna says reminds her of the epic 2001 and 2004 vintages. She also loves the 2017 vintage, which I look forward to tasting next year. This wine is incredibly precise and sharp; however, the volume and generous fruit weight promises a long aging future. The aromas veer toward red berry, cherry and cassis, and the darker black fruit tones that you might expect are less prominent in the Asili. The wine majestically captures the elegance and the power of this iconic vintage. 97+/100. Drink 2025 - 2050. Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
