Goedhuis, April 2022, Score: 97-98
Almost equal proportions of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this has a wonderful perfume of violets, lavender, morello cherry and freshly fallen autumn leaves. It starts gracefully in the palate, with excellent composure: the tannins, whilst intense and chalky in nature, are rounded and sit in unison with the sweet broad fruit flavours. A little more reserved and less showy than some years, but wonderfully harmonious. There is so much potential here. This bears the hallmarks of a great wine in the making.

The 2021 La Mission Haut-Brion is blessed with an ethereal bouquet, subtle touches of wilted iris petal and truffle infuse the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, perfectly judged acidity, quite compact on the mid-palate with linear and correct finish. Not the most charming La Mission Haut-Brion. You could argue that it is slightly "aloof", yet intuition tells me it has something up its sleeve for later on. Patience necessary. Drink 2027 - 2060

The 2021 La Mission Haut-Brion offers lovely aromatic presence and fine balance, albeit in the smaller-scaled style of the year. Dried herbs, mint, sweet red cherry, incense and blood orange all run through the 2021. This is a decidedly understated edition of La Mission. It will be interesting to see if elevage adds body. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries and plums mingled with loamy soil, sweet spices, cigar box and licorice, the 2021 La Mission Haut-Brion is full-bodied, lively and seamless, with a deep, concentrated core of fruit framed by bright acids and supple, powdery tannins. This charming, sensual rendition of La Mission is a blend of 48% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc, attaining 13.4% alcohol.

Matthew Jukes, April 2022, Score: 18+
There is a big difference between La Chapelle and the Grand Vin as this wine is much more concentrated and more tannic and reticent. The tannins come in early, cloaking the fruit and making this elegant wine more combative and action-packed. The fruit character is superb, and the length is extraordinary given the relative lightness of the overall framework. The fruit is mildly exotic in parts over a plummy core, but the skin elements keep the taste buds buzzing with energy, which surely points to a long and even life ahead of it. While many wines in 2021 seem to want to kick off early, La Mission will take its time to blossom.

Wine Cellar Insider, April 2022, Score: 93-95
Surprisingly deep in color, it takes a bit of effort before finding the cigar box, tobacco, smoke, forest leaf, currants, blackberries and plums in the nose. On the palate, there is a richness and sweetness to the fruit. But this is not an exuberant vintage. It is reserved, slightly austere, quiet and discreet. There is finesse to the tannins and flesh to the fruits, but the wine is restrained, building in the mid-palate with air, finishing with chewy currants, leafy, fresh, green herbs, thyme and dark chocolate. The wine blends 48% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc, 13.4% ABV. Harvesting took place, September 20 - October 8. Yields were 48 hectoliters per hectare, with 40% of the harvest going into the grand Vin. Drink from 2026-2055.

St Emilion’s most historic estate expresses its great terroir of limestone and calcareous clay to absolute perfection. A blend of 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot, with an array of wild hedgerow fruits and black forest gâteau. It is extraordinarily layered, poised and yet lively at the same time. The generosity of the Merlot fruit is supported by the energy and purity of the Cabernet Franc, which gives additional grip and a noticeable lift of fresh acidity. The 2021 Ausone was picked on September 30 for the Merlot and October 4–6 for the Cabernet Franc, with a higher percentage of Cabernet Franc because some of the Merlot was deselected into the Chapelle. Matured in 90% new oak, this has a fragrant and floral bouquet, more iris than violet, revealing a hint of seaweed in the background. The palate is well-defined, quite strict and focused, certainly one of the more mineral-driven Ausones that I have encountered at this stage. The limestone terroir is evident on the finish. Again, this is a little leaner and less flamboyant than recent vintages. Having tasted Ausone at this prenatal stage for over 20 years, I don’t find the thrilling "drive” or the pyrotechnics of the 2001, 2010, 2016 or 2019. Yet this Ausone is compelling in its own uncompromising way, and I wouldn't want it any different. Drink 2026 - 2050

The 2021 Ausone could turn out to be one of the wines of the vintage on the Right Bank. It shows terrific balance, with just enough mid-palate sweetness and texture to fill out the layers. To be sure the 2021 is an understated Ausone, but all the elements are so nicely balanced. Red/purplish berry fruit, pomegranate, spice and mocha are pushed forward. The blend is 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot, with the Merlot more in evidence today while the Franc is felt mostly in the wine's finish. Rose petal, cinnamon and blood orange add an exotic flourish. Drink 2036-2061

Wine Advocate, April 2022, Score: 97-100
A blend of 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot, the 2021 Ausone is a strong candidate for the title of wine of the vintage. Wafting from the glass with aromas of wild blueberries and raspberries mingled with rose petals, violets, exotic spices, vine smoke and blood orange, it's full-bodied, seamless and sensual, with a satiny attack that segues into a deep, layered mid-palate of breathtaking precision and intensity without weight. Built around bright acids and ultra-refined tannins and concluding with a resonant, perfumed finish, this profound young Ausone represents the essence of this great limestone terroir. I am not in the habit of drinking six-month-old Bordeaux cask samples, but this is one wine that would have sorely tempted me to make an exception to that rule if my appointment at the estate hadn't been one of the first of the day!

Matthew Jukes, April 2022, Score: 19+
This is a wonderfully suave and cultured Ausone with a quietness and composure that is compelling. The nose is floral and slightly spicy over a core of classic Ausone wild red and black fruit and it is delivered sotte voce with the palate following in a similar vein. The finish is as civilised as it gets with discreet levels of tannins hidden beneath the flowing crimson gown of fruit. It seems so calm and restrained that you wonder where the classic Ausone power and majesty is to be found and the answer is on the nose. If you don’t spend some time on the perfume, you will miss everything – the whole story, the plot line, the set-up, the truth. While the finale will happen in a couple of decades time, the cast is complete. If you read the statistics above, just as in any situation then you might conclude that this is a powerful, oaky, concentrated wine. This could not be further from the truth – it is sensational and as considered, calm and sophisticated as any the very finest in vintage.

Underbrush, smoke, cigar wrapper, espresso, spice, dark cocoa, flowers and the strong sensation of crushed rocks and stones tossed into the Atlantic ocean create the the enticing bouquet. On the palate, the wine is medium/full-bodied, elegant, polished and chalky with layers of sweet, ripe, earthy, red pit fruits, salty tannins, herbs dark chocolate. There is length, minerality and complexity on the mid-palate and a vibrancy to the red fruits with a strong crushed rock influence in the finish. This is a serious candidate for the wine of the vintage. Made from a blend of 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot,12.8% ABV, pH 3.6. The harvest took place from September 30 - October 6. Violet edging, jewel red depths. There is austerity on the tannins here, but also great depths through the palate, with controlled but juicy loganberry and raspberry fruits, and waves of saffron, creamy red-fruit puree, crushed rock, cold ash and salt-cracker salinity. Subdued, with hidden power and complexity. A tough year for this stable of wines - or rather proof of their exceptionally high standards, making a half production of Simard, no Haut Simard, tiny amounts of Fonbel and almost certainly no Moulin St Georges. The last year that Ausone will be recorded as a Premier Grand Cru Classé A, before publication of the new ranking in September 2022. Harvest September 30 to October 6, 100% new oak. In conversion to organic farming since 2020, Philippe Baillarguet cellar master. Average vine age 55 years.

From a .37 ha parcel in Les Véroilles of 60+ year old vines saved for a very tiny parcel in Richebourg proper. An exuberantly spicy nose is much more expressive than it usually is with its aromas of rose petal, violet, lavender, sandalwood, hoisin and once again, exotic tea nuances. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the gorgeously textured and refined yet seriously powerful larger-bodied flavors that conclude in a hugely long if moderately austere, balanced and stylish finish. This is robust yet classy and a wine that should also amply repay 15 to 20 years of keeping. Don't miss! Drinking 2037+.

Vinous, October 2024, Score: 93
The NV Brut Classic Cuvée Edition I is the inaugural release of Champagne Taittinger's English sparkling wine project founded in 2014, made from vines planted in 2017 in chalk and flint soils in Kent. It is based on the 2020 vintage with around 25% of reserve wines dating to the tiny first vintage of 2018 and the first proper vintage in 2019, all fermented and aged in stainless steel only, undergoing full malolactic conversion. The wine is a blend (...) reflecting the current plantings at the 69-hectare estate. A citric, bright lemon and green apple freshness defines the lively nose of the wine. More air allows lemony Viennoiserie to peep through, as well as an ozone breeze. Fine, creamy bubbles immediately distinguish the slender palate, where more lemon freshness is bedded in the smoothness of that exemplary mousse. An impressive and elegant debut, svelte and clean-cut, especially considering the Pinot Noir dominance of the wine. Châpeau.

The Times, September 2024
This is clearly a wine that delivers on the promise of this Anglo-French collaboration, bringing the best of both worlds, at once with a youthful vivacity, but also an underlying complexity and concentration that will continue to emerge with a little more age. Put simply, this is a delicious wine and a great addition to the English sparkling scene.

Corbeaux means curved hollow in old French and this vineyard lies in a small dip beside Mazis Chambertin. It is renowned for making wines with charm and approachability. It was unusually closed the day we tasted, Frédérique felt, possibly due to the sudden drop in temperature. Perhaps it was more sensitive than some of the more structured, robust wines in their cellar. All the components are there though for a very fine wine.

Otherwise there is excellent volume to the robust and overtly muscular middle weight plus flavors that culminate in a rustic, firm and youthfully austere finish where a touch of wood resurfaces. This is a big and very serious wine and while it is not firm to the point of being hard, it clearly needs time to harmonize. Drink: 2024+

Stephen Tanzer, January 2018, Score: 90-92
Bright, dark red. A touch of gamey reduction to the aromas of blueberry, blackberry, violet and licorice; showing less new oak on the nose than most of these 2016s. Densely packed and suave on entry, then quite tightly wound in the middle palate, showing less early sweetness and a juicier quality than the old-vines Gevrey. This distinctly masculine wine is a bit youthfully severe, with its very firm tannins reaching the front teeth. But I suspect it will benefit from the de-gassing effect of a racking.

Rich and winning – transparent and rather charming though with a hint of creamy coffee (an oak effect?). Drink 2026-2042

Goedhuis Waddesdon, April 2025
Really alluring nose of blossom and yellow apple and yellow plum. This is very successful in this vintage, with a lovely weight of the classic Marsanne/Roussanne richness of fruit, with a touch of orange and quince giving structure to the lovely round stone fruit on the palate. Nice savoury touch with some blanched almonds and a fine bead of salinity running through it, providing a lovely freshness.
-
Jeb Dunnuck, May 2025, Score: 94
The 2023 Saint Joseph Blanc is a blend dominated by Marsanne with a smaller portion of Roussanne, brought up for 10 months in 10-15% new barrels. It showed beautifully, with a rich, honeyed apple, quince, and crushed stone-like minerality. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a layered, elegant mouthfeel and good acidity. While normally an equal split between varieties, the Roussanne didn't fare as well in this vintage, leading to more Marsanne in the blend. It should have 7-8 years of prime drinking, although I see no need to delay gratification either.

The 2023 Coteau de Chery has a lovely soft peachy nose, with apricot, a touch of ginger and white blossom. There’s a steely saline minerality on the palate that brings a great driving freshness, balanced wonderfully against the riper Viognier character. Lovely generous weight and body, with a long, crystalline mineral finish. This is such a fabulous expression of this famous vineyard, a true labour of love.

Jeb Dunnuck, May 2025, Score: 97
Compared to the Clos Chanson, the 2023 Condrieu Chery brings a sweeter, more opulent profile yet holds onto a gorgeous sense of purity. Honeyed orange, toasted bread, white flowers, and subtle tropical notes define the aromatics, and it brings a liquid rock-like sense of chalkiness and minerality on the palate. Medium to full-bodied, focused, elegant, and beautifully balanced, you can't go wrong here, and it, too, is perfect for drinking over the coming decade. Drink 2025-3035.

St Joseph had a difficult time in 2023, but from these vines further north in Chavanay, Perret’s wine is a lovely expression of the terroir and fared much better. Peppery blue fruit and violets on the nose, that carry through onto the palate. There’s a wonderful energy here, framed by bouncy fruit: black cherries with a saline bite. Generous and delicious to drink now, and well worth stocking up on.

As ever, raised solely in stainless steel to achieve maximum brightness and terroir-transparency. The youngest vines are 50 years old, and many are much older and come from a vineyard carpeted in pudding stones. This is super successful in 2023, immediately accessible and approachable. Sweet fruited, with cherry and fresh brambly fruit. A sweet pastry element makes it very moreish indeed. Lovely purity and spritzy freshness here, with a touch of liquorice giving it a darker, more brooding core. A lot to like!
-
Vinous, November 2025, Score: 91+
Blending 70% Grenache with the remainder equally split between Mourvèdre and Syrah, the 2023 Gigondas La Tour Sarrasine starts a little reductive. Time in the glass gradually unlocks just-ripe red fruits, peppery elements and dried herbs. Blackberries add another layer. Much more engaging on the full-bodied palate than the nose, the 2023 offers remarkable overall intensity and freshness. Built around polished tannins and finishing long and spicy, the 2023 is best kept for at least two more years in a cool cellar. Drinking Window: 2027 - 2035

This joint venture between the esteemed Rothschild family of Ch Lafite in the Medoc and Dr Nicolas Catena, the well respected premium Argentinian winemaker is sensational. We have been buying it since it was first released in 2000 and have just received our allocation of the excellent 2005 vintage which is superb. The fruit is ripe and juicy. It will drink well now and will keep on doing so for 12 - 15 years easily. The blend is 65/35 Cabernet/Malbec, classic "left bank". It spends 18 months ageing in 60% new oak barrels and total production is 5000 cases. It exhibits luxurious amounts of blueberry, blackcurrant, cassis, lead pencil with gorgeous texture, purity and length. It really is a treat and one of the best wines to come out of South America.

A very classy expression of this famous appellation, from vineyards planted between 1909 and 1965. Bright and lifted floral aromatics, with citrus fruits undertones. On the palate, the richness and depth of fruit evolve, with flavours of pannacotta and freshly whipped cream. An appealing structure and long flavoursome finish reminiscent of freshly cracked hazelnuts. Delicious.

Neal Martin, June 2025, Score: 91-93
The 2023 Pouilly-Fuissé Clos du Roy is aged for 12 months in barrel on the lees without SO2, and then in tank for a further six months. This has a lovely nose with citrus fruit, hints of candy floss and wild peach—very seductive and nicely defined. The palate is well balanced with a discreet bitter lemon note on the entry, quite linear with good weight and girth on the finish imparted by the clayey soils. Very fine.

The 2015 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is raised in 80% new oak with 20% whole bunch. It has a very detailed and focused bouquet with precise blackberry, raspberry and morello cherry aromas neatly infused with mineral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, powerful without losing control and building towards a very structured, spicy finish. Whilst I would still dial down the oak to 50-60%, nevertheless it remains a very well-crafted Chambertin with plenty of substance and ambition, and that ain't a bad thing when you are a Clos-de-Bèze. Here too the nose is quite ripe yet remains fresh and inviting with its more elegant combination of spice and floral elements adding breadth to the red currant, plum, violet and underbrush scents where there is just enough wood to remark upon. The more refined and highly energetic medium weight plus flavors also display more evident minerality on the sleek, focused and explosively long finale. I very much like the interplay of dry extract, tannin and supporting acidity as the sense of harmony and vibrancy is lovely. Don't miss! (93-95)/2032+

The 2021 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak, takes time to unfurl on the nose: brambly red fruit, undergrowth, just a touch of liquorice and sea spray. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, well-judged acidity, more open than previous vintages, supple and very pure on the finish. Wonderful. Four barrels produced - the maximum produced from their holding. Drink 2024-2042.

A glowing brisk crimson colour. The bouquet is where it belongs, at the heart of Vosne-Romanée. Still needs a little teasing out though. Good energy at the front of the palate, a useful thread of acidity, the oak lends a light char, then the fruit returns to sweep through to the finish. The acidity is just right, tannins are refined. Fresh crunchy red berry fruit to finish. Drink from 2029-2036.

A less expressive but more complex nose grudgingly offers up its aromas of various red berry fruits, a bevy of floral nuances and ample spice elements. There is a really lovely inner mouth perfume to the gorgeously textured larger-scaled flavors that possess evident minerality and muscle on the well-detailed and beautifully persistent finale. The tannins are also quite fine-grained and overall, this is a Malconsorts of refinement and finesse, which is admittedly unusual. Atypical or not, this is a really lovely effort. Sweet spot. Chambertin is considered the jewel in the crown of Gevrey Chambertin’s wealth of eight Grand Cru vineyards. Open and instantly striking, it has an air of self confidence with flamboyant summer fruit aromas and touch of freshly brewed coffee and liquorice. There is an immediacy in its volume as the wine coats the mouth with smoothness and richness. An abundance of 'matière' combines weight, structure and balance. A hugely pleasurable wine for the long term.

From .67 ha parcel planted in 1940.Here the nose is moderately reduced though there is a lovely sense of verve suffusing the beautifully textured, plump and round medium-bodied flavors that possess a caressing, even succulent, mouthfeel before terminating in a slightly more austere, dusty and sneaky long finale. This balanced effort also needs to develop more depth but again, that should reasonably occur if given a chance. Drinking 2029+.

13 barrels have been made from 3ha30 which means a measly 9hl/ha. Another fine deep imperial purple, with an additional glossiness over and above the Morey Alouettes. This bears all the hallmarks of a fine Clos de la Roche, enough fruit and perfect ripeness, just enough acidity, greater persistence with a few tannins to provide the structure. This will stand up extremely well in the future. Fine persistence. Drink from 2030-2040.

Neal Martin, November 2022, Score: 94-96
The 2021 Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has exquisite delineation and focus on the nose, almost pixelated, very transparent yet with ample, vivacious red fruit that gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, nicely structured with a touch of sinew on the finish. Not the most precise Clos de la Roche from Ponsot in recent years, but very capable and with the density to suggest it will age long-term. Drink 2026-2050

Jasper Morris MW, November 2022, Score: 94-96
13 barrels have been made from 3ha30 which means a measly 9hl/ha. Another fine deep imperial purple, with an additional glossiness over and above the Morey Alouettes. This bears all the hallmarks of a fine Clos de la Roche, enough fruit and perfect ripeness, just enough acidity, greater persistence with a few tannins to provide the structure. This will stand up extremely well in the future. Fine persistence. Drink from 2030-2040.

Robert Parker, April 1998, Score: 91-93
I liked the 1997 Lafleur more than the 1996. It is one of those rare Lafleurs that lucky purchasers will be able to drink at a young age. An impressively saturated dense ruby/purple color is followed by the classic Lafleur aromas - jammy black raspberries, kirsch liqueur, prunes, and minerals. Forward, full-bodied, and sexy, with an unctuous texture, and gobs of sweet tannin, this is a luxurious, evolved Lafleur that will provide gorgeous drinking in 2-3 years, and last for two decades. The only other vintage of Lafleur that tasted this evolved and satiny at such a youthful age was the 1983. Drink: 2000-2018.

Robert Parker, April 1999, Score: 89-91
Lafleur's 1997 is easy to assess. The color is dark ruby with purple nuances. Medium-bodied, with striking kirsch liqueur and black raspberry scents, moderate tannin, excellent purity and ripeness, it displays sweetness and glycerin. It should be ready to drink early, and I expect it to be one of the longer-lived wines from the 1997 vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018.

Robert Parker, April 2000, Score: 88
The dark ruby-colored 1997 is impossibly tannic, with a tough texture and lean constitution. Paradoxically, the wine has weight, ripeness, and richness, but its dry, astringent finish is reminiscent of a 1998 Medoc. This wine's development is questionable, and I have serious reservations about its ratio of tannin to fruit. It may turn out to be excellent, but patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2015.

Wine Spectator, January 2000, Score: 89
A solid wine. Good dried cherry and berry aromas follow through to a medium-bodied palate, with light tannins and a fruity finish. Perhaps not as impressive as in barrel. Best from 2001 through 2005. -JS
