The 2019 Beychevelle remains glorious on the nose with detailed red berry fruit, incense and wilted rose petals. Maybe a little more understated than its peers? It has an endearing purity. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm grip, outstanding balance, very well poised with just a touch of glycine toward the finish. Yet another superb bottle. Tasted at the Beychevelle vertical at the property. Drink 2025-2055.

Neal Martin, June 2020, Score: 93-95
The 2019 Beychevelle, one of the only wines that I actually tasted at the château with Philippe Blanc prior to lockdown, has a wonderful bouquet with detailed blackberry, briary, cedar and light touches of mocha unfurling from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, a discrete marine influence taking over towards the finish. There is a tang of seaweed and brine on the aftertaste. It keeps you coming back for more. This is a great 2019 from Blanc and his team though we must wait to see if it will surpass their 2018. Drink 2025 - 2060

Antonio Galloni, June 2020, Score: 92-94
The 2019 Beychevelle is a rich, unctuous wine. Blackberry jam, cloves, licorice, bittersweet chocolate and torrefaction infuse the 2019 with tons of darkness that works well with the wine's flamboyant personality. Beychevelle will appeal most to readers who enjoy exotic, super-ripe wines. In 2019, Beychevelle pushes the limits, in my view.

Decanter, June 2020, Score: 94
A confident and well expressed Beychevelle, this is bristling with blackberry and cassis fruits, creamy through the mid palate as so many of the best wines are in this vintage. It's broad shouldered which takes it a little out of appellation signature, but the glamour is well balanced by a lovely crushed mint leaf finish. Harvest September 23 to October 10, 55% of production in this main estate wine, 45% in the 2nd wine. 60% new oak. 3% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. Drinking Window 2028 - 2044

The 2020 Branaire Ducru has an open, more forward bouquet than its peers—just a touch of mint infusing the red berry fruit, later developing hints of India ink and pressed violet. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, sappy tannins. This doesn't quite possess the panache and complexity of its peers. It's old school in style with a firm backbone. Despite a little austerity toward the finish, this is a Saint-Julien that brims with charm and classicism. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2020 Branaire Ducru has a tightly wound bouquet of blackberry, wild hedgerow, freshly tilled loam and distinct sea spray scents, all well defined, albeit 15–20 minutes after opening my sample bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, and very cohesive, displaying a keen thread of acidity. Unlike previous vintages, there is impressive density on the midpalate where it once was a little lean, and plenty of energy and tension conveyed by the finish. Excellent. 2028-2048

The 2020 Branaire-Ducru was so alluring en primeur, but is very shy today. That said, some of that youthful exuberance has given way to the characteristic Brainaire finesse. Dark red cherry, spice, grilled herbs, menthol and licorice emerge, but only with great reluctance. Sweet floral and spice notes lift the finish nicely. This is a fine vintage for Branaire but it is an atypical one, too. Usually velvety and charming, the classic Branaire flavours are here but they are tense, angular and rather introverted. The acidity is bitingly fresh and the tannins are lined up ready for combat, but these two elements do not dare to interfere with the fruit. The oak is lovely, too, and so I am confident that this will be a hugely enjoyable wine down the line, but you will have to wait not only for the tannins to soften, but also for the fruit it drop its shoulders, too.

The 2024 Duhart-Milon was picked between September 24 and October 8 and matured in 50% new oak. The aromatics take their time to coalesce. It's a little herbaceous at first although that ebbs away to reveal quite pure blackcurrant, raspberry and Morello scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit and a dab of licorice toward the finish that just tapers slightly. Overall, this is a decent Pauillac in an old-school style that I approve of.

This is superb Duhart with sleek, shimmeringly clean flanks and a long, smooth, refined finish. There is a sense of coolness and calm throughout, and it never seems to break step or feel too urgent. Unlike last year’s wine, which seemed tense and eager, this is Zen-like and refined, and the finish is generous, with discreet ripples of tannin and acidity, which further heighten the experience. The 2023 Le Petit-Mouton is being matured in 50% new oak for a planned 18 months. It has an attractive, understated bouquet with pencil shavings and cedar-tinged black fruit—not as complex as the 2022, but refined. Two weeks later the nose demonstrates just a soupçon more éclat [brightness]. The palate is medium-bodied and harmonious with crisp acidity on the entry, dashes of spice and black pepper on the back-palate and moderate length on the linear finish. Matthew Jukes, May 2025, Score: 18+
Technical Director Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy informed me of the importance of a frustrating six-week period while the grapes underwent veraison on this wine. A quick glance at the harvested bunches would hoodwink anyone into thinking the bunches were ripe, but while the colour was uniform, the proper ripeness of each berry was anything but! Some grapes, those who turned first, were perfect, while others, masquerading as ripe, were sour and harsh! This called for the water bath (Delta Densilys)! Destemmed grapes were dropped into this bath full of sugared water. The density of the water, determined by its sugar content, allowed some grapes to float while others sank. Those that sank were of the perfect density and, therefore, ripeness. The floaters were sent off, never to be seen again. Some 40% was eliminated from the lesser blocks, and even the finest plots sacrificed 10-14% of their yields, significantly improving the wine quality. You only have to consider what might have happened if 10, 20, or 30% of unripe grapes (perhaps containing only 6% of potential alcohol) remained in the fermentations! This low-tech invention was trialled in 2017, and it came into its own in this vintage, with a few estates happy to confirm they rented or even acquired this piece of kit! Being able to vinify this wine carefully and with great accuracy has meant that Le Petit Mouton shows uncommon plushness and fruit weight, and coupled with this vintage’s trademark freshness, it is an amazingly detailed wine. While no one wants uniformity, eliminating unknown extremes is a very comforting skill. After all, wine is all about nuance, and Clerc Milon embraces violets, berries, and even unexpected hints of exoticism. Chapeau. 18+/20

Ripe blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, and spicy notes all define the 2024 Le Petit Mouton De Mouton Rothschild. Medium-bodied on the palate, it has remarkable purity, fine tannins, and a great finish. It's a charming, layered, certainly outstanding, Pauillac in the making.

Goedhuis Waddesdon, April 2025, Score: 93-94
A deep ruby colour with a medley of dark fruit on the nose, melding with hints of fresh coffee bean, wood smoke and mocha. A more generous style of wine than many this vintage, with a rewarding generosity and confident exuberance. The crisp apple freshness lifts the mid-palate and blends perfectly with the sweet sensation of vanilla pod on the finish. Hugely pleasurable.

Jane Anson, April 2025, Score: 93
Here you get that sexy Petit Mouton kick, defined by Cabernet, less exuberant profile than in recent years and yet great texture and lift, supple blackberry fruits, cocoa bean lacing. Very much succeeding in the vintage without compromising the heart of the estate signature. Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy director. Harvest 23 September to 5 October. 3.62 pH. 50% new oak.

Burghound, January 2012, Score: 90-92
A slightly more complex if similar nose adds touches of violets and plum to the aromatic mix before introducing vibrant, intense, dense and quite serious flavors that enjoy impressive mid-palate concentration as well as an ample amount of tannin-buffering sap, all wrapped in a lingering and impeccably well-balanced finish. Again, it's rare to see this level of quality for this particular appellation. In a word, terrific.Drink: 2017+

An expressive and notably ripe nose combines relatively generous wood influence with plum, earth and cassis aromas that introduce textured and palate staining flavors that possess outstanding energy as they explode on the powerful and hugely long finish. This is a big yet elegant Charmes with enormous aging potential. Buy it if you can find it.Drink: 2021+

Burghound, Score: 89-92
Here the expressive nose offers up both upper and lower register aromas of pomegranate, red cherry, earth and underbrush. The notably rich and enveloping medium weight flavors possess excellent delineation and a subtle minerality that carries over to the extract-rich and mouth coating finale. This is first-rate and should drink well both young and with 6 to 8 years of age. Recommended. Outstanding. Drink 2021+

Only 40% of the annual production went into the Grand Vin in 2017. The final blend focuses on the quality of its Cabernet fruit (76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Cabernet Franc), with Merlot and Petit Verdot making up the final 15%. A very direct style both on the nose and on the palate, with striking cassis and blackcurrant flavours. This wine has an excellent kernel of mid-palate fruit. It is fresh and cool in style, with a fine, rewarding length.

Neal Martin, April 2018, Score: 92-94
The 2017 Calon-Ségur was cropped at 43.5hl/ha and underwent a 20-day cuvaison after which it is matured entirely in new oak for 20 months. It contains 13.2° alcohol. At the moment the aromatics convey the 100% new oak but there is sufficient fruit underneath. There is a palpable sense of “coolness” imbuing the aromatics and like other Saint-Estèphe barrel samples, it conveys a subtle estuary-like tincture. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannin, beautifully integrated new oak that lends this a silky texture. Perhaps this is the smoothest of all the 2017s I encountered within this appellation, a classy and sophisticated Calon-Ségur in the making and heightened by the thrilling tension towards the finish and the latent energy that lingers in the mouth. Excellent. 2024 - 2045

Antonio Galloni, April 2018, Score: 90-93
The 2017 Calon Ségur is a classy, polished wine. Conditions favored Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up 76% of the blend. Open-knit and supple, the 2017 is surprisingly open and harmonious in the early going. Hints of espresso, mocha, red cherry jam, cinnamon and dusk of new French oak add accents, but it is the wine's gentle personality that stands out most. In some vintages, Calon Ségur speaks loudly. In 2017, the Grand Vin is hushed and yet very expressive. The blend is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Tasted three times.

Wine Advocate, April 2018, Score: 92-94
The 2017 Calon-Ségur is tentatively blended of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it opens with pronounced black currants, crushed blackberries and fresh black plums with hints of cigar box, sandalwood and cinnamon stick plus a waft of mossy bark. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant, energetic and fresh with layers of black fruit, perfumed incense and fragrant earth notions, lingering nicely with exotic spices coming through on the finish.

Decanter, April 2018, Score: 94
This is rich, with fresh blueberry and cassis notes. The fruit is on the elegant side, and this should be earlier to drink than the 2016 and even the 2014. Technical director Vincent Bache-Gabrielsen and the team took an interesting approach to building the mid-palate, increasing the persistency by re-integrating the press wine immediately after vinification, so having both free run and press wine together during maceration. Blending the press wine at such an early stage took a leap of faith, as did using so much of the young, nine-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon in the first blend. But it works - this is precise, balanced and appealing, building slowly over the palate. Yield of 43.5hl/ha, 40% of production into the grand vin. 3.7pH. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040

Matthew Jukes, April 2018, Score: 18
The growing season started early with relatively dry conditions and temperatures which were above average – accordingly the harvest was two weeks early compared with the previous five vintages. Because of the proximity to the Gironde Estuary the vineyards were protected from the frosts at the end of April. In spite of some hot spells, the clay soils regulated moisture well. Everything was picked between 15th and 29th September. Very deep and sonorous on the nose there is a superb wave of cassis which greets the palate. This is a different take on Calon and it is a style of wine which I have never seen before at this property. It is shaped like the lovely 2008 in terms of refinement and size, but this wine has 15% ten-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, and this is the first time that this fruit has been used in the Grand Vin. It brings acidity and freshness and this lifts the wine and elevates the blackberry fruit beautifully. It will make 20-30 years even though it initially seems to be a more discreet and calm vintage.

Jancis Robinson, April 2018, Score: 17.5+
Inky core with black-cherry rim. Ripe, dark and with a fine mineral cast to the cassis fruit, which is ripe but not sweet. Paper-fine tannins in many layers. Great ageing potential but also accessible. Deceptively accessible, suggesting lack of ageing ability, but I don't think that is the case. Cool, fresh, serious, fine cassis fruit. The finesse comes from the lack of sweetness but there's no lack of fruit. Dry, firm and very St-Estèphe, with tannin structure. But the structure is filled molecule by molecule with the fruit. It's so finely balanced. There's more firmness than in Cos but there's still excellent harmony. Opens to a hint of violets. Super-moreish and juicy even with the structure of the terroir. Full-bodied, creamy and supple, the 2017 Hermitage La Maison Bleue looks to be a thrilling Hermitage to drink over the next 10-15 years. It's loaded with mixed blueberries and raspberries, adds subtle notes of mocha and baking spices and picks up a savory hint of black olives on the long, silky finish. Don't make the mistake of thinking only the La Chapelle is worth drinking, this should be a real beauty when it's released next year.

The inky colored 2017 Hermitage La Chapelle comes all from the Le Méal (50%), Les Bessards (25%), and Rocoules (25%) and was brought up in 15% new oak, with the balance in once-used, twice-used, and older barrels and demi-muids, A magical wine in the making, with some resemblance to the 2009, its deep purple color is followed by a ripe, layered, incredibly sexy wine loaded with notions of blackberries, black raspberries, crushed rocks, spice, and new saddle leather. Fresh, vibrant, and layered, with a flamboyant style that's already almost impossible to resist, it's a gorgeous wine that will keep for 3+ decades.

Looking at the 2014 reds, the 2014 Hermitage is resting as a final blend and is scheduled to be bottled early next year. It has a serious floral character as well as the classic minerality imparted from the Bessards lieu-dit (which makes up the bulk of the cuvée), gorgeous depth of fruit, medium to full-bodied richness and fine, polished tannin. Like most 2014s, it will be approachable at an early age, but this beauty has class and will evolve gracefully. Jeb Dunnuck Score (94-96)/100 Drink Date NA
