Brunello di Montalcinos are the most sophisticated and elegant expression of Tuscany’s great grape, Sangiovese. They are refined, yet powerful; ripe with sweet berry fruits, tempered by savoury spice; with firm, fine tannins, and crunchy fresh acidity. This 2012 from Sesti is all of these things. Brick red in colour, this wine has real warmth, with sweet prune and cherry aromas. These luxurious flavours develop in the palate, supported by hints of cinnamon and cloves. The wine’s central tannic core contributes structure and depth. It is a hugely appealing style: forward and yet age-worthy.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a tiny part Sangiovese, the 2017 Sammarco is lush, generous and soft. This wine captures the spirit of generosity and richness that characterizes this sunny vintage. It reveals softer lines and more pliant contours compared to some of the cooler vintages of the past, and you get a generous down pouring of dark fruit, dried blackberry, cinnamon spice and cured leather or tobacco. The tannins are quite robust, but the wine also shows an immediate and accessible approach that distinguishes this growing season. You might notice that my review for the 2016 vintage is missing. That's because the 2016 vintage will be released after 2017 when that older wine has benefitted from more cellaring.
-
Antonio Galloni, October 2020, Score: 95
The 2017 Sammarco is heady, exotic and totally beautiful. It is also not anywhere near ready to show all it's got. Iron, smoke, red cherry fruit, leather, blood orange and spice are some of the many notes that infuse the 2017 with layers of complexity. Firm, muscular tannins are going to need time to soften. Even so, the 2017 is a rare Sammarco that will require only minimal cellaring, which is why the estate decided to release it ahead of the 2016.

Lovely, lifted nose, with a touch of smokiness. Dark cherries, kirsch, chocolate and blood orange. There’s a savoury streak to the nose and palate that adds interest, really quite long. The tannins are soft and caressing, giving the wine a graceful flow. Smart. 85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc.

Neal Martin, April 2025, Score: 90-92
The 2024 L'If was picked from October 4 to 6 for the Merlot, then October 8 for the Cabernet Franc. It aged for 12 to 16 months in 50% new oak. This has a fragrant bouquet, with mainly red fruit and slate-like scents. The palate is medium-bodied and balanced, with slightly chalky tannins and a little flesh on the mid-palate. Lightly spiced on the finish, this is a comparatively straightforward L'If compared to previous vintages that will serve as a fine earlier drinking Saint-Émilion.

Antonio Galloni, April 2025, Score: 92-94
The 2024 L'If is an elegant, sleek wine. Crushed flowers, tobacco, cedar, incense, dried herbs and menthol give the 2024 lovely aromatic presence. L'If is light on its feet, with a bit less overt concentration than most years, but there's more than enough persistence to compensate for that, shaping the wine in a style that favors linear energy over volume. Harvest took place between October 4-6 for the Merlots and October 8 for Franc, a much more condensed period between two rains. Aging is in French oak, 50% new. Tasted two times.

Love the aromatics here, and vibrant ruby colour, this is a real success and bright spot in the vintage, one to look out for, fragrant, tomato leaf, peony, lilac, raspberry fruits, lots of energy and delicate juice, not a powerhouse but skilful and early to medium drinking. 3.37 ph. Harvest 4 to 8 October, really held on to push for maturity. 30% new oak, even after sorting they are at 39hl/h yield here on these clay-limestone soils. Touch of chaptilsation and saignée, showing that even with waiting til October to harvest these things were needed.

This wine stopped us in our tracks. I was seduced by the quality, harmony and sheer class of this stunning wine! This Pichon Lalande exemplifies the supremacy of Bordeaux’s two most famous grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and Merlot (23%). Beautifully perfumed with hints of violets and dark cherries. It caresses the palate with its sweetness, charm and tenderness, slowly building in energy and intensity, finishing with Pauillac drive and depth. A real highlight of the vintage with a great life ahead. This is a totally brilliant wine.

The 2017 Pichon-Lalande was picked from 7 September to 2 October and underwent a 23 day cuvaison period. It is intense on the nose, the new oak coming through a little strongly since the sample came from a new barrel, the final blend consisting of 60% new wood. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, the Cabernet Sauvignon driving this alone with layers of black fruit laced with cedar and graphite. It is a very “Pauillac” Pichon Lalande, less opulent and giving than recent vintages and more in the style of say, the 1996 or 2010. There is very good persistence on the saline finish but it is clearly a wine that is going to require more cellaring than its peers. Tasted four times in total, each time this gained more substance and density. 2022 - 2045

Antonio Galloni, April 2018, Score: 92-95
The 2017 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is gorgeous, but it is also going to need time to come together. The sensuality and allure typical of so many Pauillacs is not at all evident here. A rush of dark cherry, plum, smoke, charcoal and exotic spice make a strong opening statement in a powerful Pichon Comtesse that is not ready to show all of its cards. The 2017 was incredibly reticent in several tastings, which is probably a very good thing for its long-term potential. Today, though, the 2017 is dense, powerful and closed in on itself, without the layers that define the 2014, 2015 and 2016.

This barrel sample is 100% new oak, whereas the final blend will be only 60% new oak. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is very deep garnet-purple in color with an incredibly fragrant nose of roses, lavender and baking spices over a core of crushed blackcurrants, wild blueberries and fresh plums plus touches of iron ore and underbrush. Medium-bodied and elegant with firm, grainy tannins, it's quite taut and muscular, with lots of perfumed and mineral layers and a long finish with lingering cinnamon and anise notes.

Decanter, April 2018, Score: 94
If you just taste the big name Pauillacs, you would be hard-pressed to understand that 2017 has been a challenging year. This is one of my wines of the vintage, no question. It's from 21ha, biodynamically farmed, with Vincent Masson as consultant. Just a few plots further away from the river were affected by frost. The slight austerity of 2017 is evident, with a savoury quality to the fruit, but this is exceptionally good, with plenty of stunning fruit and well defined tannins. The aromatics are very refined, and the intense cassis fruit doesn't sacrifice any intensity or power. It demonstrates the energy that Comtesse has displayed so consistently in recent vintages, with gorgeous finesse and structure to the tannins. The new cellar has raised the level of Cabernet from 65% to 70+%, with 12% press wine. This is going to age extremely well. Drinking Window 2026 - 2040

Matthew Jukes, April 2018, Score: 18+
Very clean and firm, there is a singular theme here. The Cabernet Sauvignon is so pure and dominant that while the other varieties clearly add detail, they are lined up behind the silhouette of the Cabernet and for the time being, they have to wait to add their voices to the experience. Very satisfying and very clean, this is a wonderful expression of this property and also the vintage.

Jancis Robinson, April 2018, Score: 17
Dark crimson with soft pink rim. Lightly leafy dark fruit. Super-smooth texture and some fruit sweetness on the mid palate. Firm, dark and elegant on the finish. Sinewy and quite supple and long even without huge intensity, showing the charm of Comtesse and still clearly revealing its Pauillac origins. A smart, elegant wine reflecting the vintage. Tannins are tender – if more serious than on the Réserve de la Comtesse – and fruit just right. (JH) Drink 2027-2042

This is very much in the half Nuits/half Vosne model of a classic Boudots where the Vosne spice shows up on the ripe nose and the Nuits character shows up on the muscled flavors. But here the tannins are relatively refined and not really all that rustic; indeed the mouth feel is a good deal more sophisticated than the Vaucrains. I very much like this as it's powerful, concentrated, balanced and beautifully persistent. Drink: 2022+.Comments: outstanding!

Once again there is a plethora of floral elements adding both breadth and elegance to the equally cool but more restrained essence of red and dark berries that are laced with plenty of freshly turned earth and a touch of the sauvage. There is excellent intensity to the even more overtly mineral-driven, sleek and muscular flavors that terminate in a youthfully austere and again mildly raspy finish that still delivers excellent length. This too is going to require a plenty of patience as it's very much constructed for the long haul and especially so in magnum format. Drink 2043+

The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has a tight-lipped bouquet that demands coaxing from the glass; the 80% whole bunches imparts captivating undergrowth/damp moss aromas that filter through the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and quite dense, with grippy tannin and a light espresso note. I find the Mazis-Chambertin has a little more grace on the finish by direct comparison. A bit of a curmudgeon, this will benefit from four or five years in bottle. 2023 - 2045

The Leroux parcel is located in the heart of Chambertin and is farmed biodynamically. It's a very poised, precise wine made with two-thirds whole bunches and 40% new wood. It's balanced and focussed, with effortless concentration and a bright, mineral-edged finish. Drinking Window 2025 – 2032.

Deep crimson. Sweet, ripe and intensely fruited on the nose. A hint of vanilla over crushed strawberries laced with pepper. Spicy too. Cool customer, less open on the palate. Pure, cool and silky on the palate. Incredible finesse already and so much more to come. Soaring beauty even if not yet expressive. Drink 2027-2045.

Readers looking for a modern day version of Latour's magnificent 1962 or 1971 should check out the sensational 1999 Latour. It is a big, concentrated offering, exhibiting a dense ruby/purple color, and a classic nose of minerals, black currants, leather, and vanilla. The wine is long, ripe, and medium-bodied, with high levels of sweet tannin. This surprisingly full, concentrated 1999 should be drinkable in 5-6 years; it will last for three decades. Drink: 2007 - 2032.

A terrific effort, this sexy, open-knit, opulent effort possesses plenty of tannin, but it is largely concealed by the wine's wealth of fruit, high extraction level, and noticeable glycerin as well as unctuosity. Dense ruby/purple-colored, with a sweet, evolved nose of black fruits (cassis, leather, and blackberries), cedar, spice box, and liquid minerals, this powerful yet seamless Latour will be surprisingly accessible at an unusually young age. Long and full-bodied, with the acidity, tannin, alcohol, and wood all beautifully integrated, it will be at its finest between 2007-2030. A classic! Drink: 2007 - 2030.

-
Robert Parker, April 2000, Score: 92-94
Because of extremely hot weather in late August and early September, Latour began harvesting its Merlot on September 14, bringing in grapes with 13.5-14% potential alcohol. Produced from yields of 39 hectoliters per hectare, the final blend was 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. The opulent, rich, concentrated 1999 is atypically forward and luscious. The dense purple color is followed by precocious, sweet black cherry/cassis aromas backed up by noteworthy liquid mineral and subtle smoky new oak notes. Dense and fat, with low acidity, an opulent, chewy texture, medium to full body, superb power, and a seductive character, it will be drinkable at an unusually early age, but, given its stuffing, will last for two decades or more. Drink: 2000 - 2020.

On the eastern side of the appellation, Meix Cadot is one of the village’s larger Premiers Crus, with a reputation to match. The oldest vines were planted at the tail end of the Second World War and are what give this Rully its concentrated and complex style. The nose displays notes of ripe apricot, lemon curd, and pie crust, while the palate has tremendous freshness to offset the wine’s natural opulence. With 25% new barrels, there is weight to the wine, yet subtle hints of oak spice help retain an elegance. An appellational gem.

Goedhuis, November 2017
2016 was a complicated vintage in Corton. On the whole the wines are fruity, but some lack in concentration having been hit badly by the April frost. This criticism could hardly be levelled at this wine: Ponsot’s late-picking style helps enhance the natural sweetness of the fruit, and this has great concentration. Rich pomegranate flavours weave across the spiced palate.

Good deep red. Sexy cherry and spice aromas complicated by alluring soil tones. Still a touch of reduction on the palate, but clearly a much sweeter and more generous wine than the Cuvée du Bourdon, with dense, well-delineated raspberry, spice and soil tones saturating the mouth and echoing on the finish. This firmly structured, sappy wine boasts notably ripe tannins and an attractive chewiness. Domaine Ponsot has made this wine since 1989.

Brilliant striking purple colour, with a lovely sheen. On the nose there is an explosion of deliciously sweet ripe dark currant and bramble fruits , with hints of fresh figs. A wonderfully fragrant wine, with direct intensity of perfumed blackberry flavours. Rich without excess, it has an almost European touch in terms of balancing directness of fruit with subtlety. Very gentle rounded soft tannins, with appealing freshness on the finish. A very harmonious wine, with mid-term ageing potential. A fine blend of 50% Malbec and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon.

As the name suggests, Clos du Roy is considered the most regal of all the Mercurey Premier Crus. In keeping with Charton’s style, the 2023 has a dark profile, where flavours of black cherry and wild raspberry are beautifully framed by tender tannins and subtle smoke. Thanks to a combination of marl and chalk soils, there is considerable power here, with a Pommard-esque power to the wine that will be well-received by fans of the appellation.
-
Burghound, October 2024, Score: 90-93
This too is completely reduced. By contrast, there is good vibrancy to the round, velvety and caressing medium-bodied flavors that are also supported by firm but relatively fine tannins on the serious, youthfully austere and sneaky long finale that displays focused power. This is potentially excellent and worth considering.

With nine-hundred vines of 70-years-old, Les Naugues is one of Charton’s most prized vineyards and takes pride of place at the front of the winery. Here the deep clay soils help create a gloriously full and rich Mercurey, displaying aromas of black cherry, crushed black pepper, and liquorice. The palate possesses power with structured tannins, yet there is lovely bright berry fruit and freshness on the finish.
-
Burghound, October 2024, Score: 91-93
A very pretty, indeed almost perfumed, nose freely speaks of cool, pure and elegant aromas of red cherry, currant, crushed anise and a violet top note. The heightened sense of refinement continues onto the nicely detailed and overtly mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess a lovely texture that carries over to the youthfully austere, firm and balanced finale. This is excellent and while it's constructed to repay at least a decade of keeping, I suspect that it will be approachable after only 4 to 5 years if you don't have the patience to wait until full maturity.

Once again the nose is firmly reduced. The supple and delicious middle weight flavors are more refined but, somewhat surprisingly, are not denser while firming up on the austere, rustic and more structured finale. This does offer more cellar potential but overall, isn't necessarily more qualitatively interesting than the Champ de Perdrix.

The 2022 Pavillon Blanc, 100% Sauvignon Blanc, is creamy, open-knit and quite seductive. A warm, dry year softened the edges, yielding an especially suave Blanc that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. Pear, spice, chamomile, dried flowers and mint all meld together. On the palate, the 2022 Pavillon Blanc retains terrific freshness and is done in a style that lies somewhere in between more generous years such as 2018, 2019 and 2020, and the more saline years like 2017 and 2021. This wine represents 50% of the harvest Pavillon Blanc was picked after the rain in August, allowing it to retain stunning freshness and epic acidity. This is a laser-sighted wine with long, sweeping citrus notes and discreet florals, and all of these notes face in the same direction, travelling along the same tracks. This is a gorgeous wine packed with tension and finesse, and it is also instantly delicious. It will perform the great trick of drinking well in its youth and ageing brilliantly. There is a libidinous hint of saltiness here, which coincidentally pops up in the Château Margaux reds, making Pavillon Blanc gloriously mouthwatering and uncommonly refreshing.

Jane Anson, April 2023, Score: 96
Pale gold in colour, maintaining pale green reflections even in such a hot vintage, and this delivers a sharp almost steely feel, with a white flower and citrus kick. The luscious aspect of the year comes through with lemon confit through the mid palate, and overall the fruit flavours and textures are creamier than in 2021, but this has nuance and lift. The team at Margaux, led by Philippe Bascaules, is always so careful to avoid skin contact in the whites, and only use the first fraction of the juice that comes out of the press;, and it pays off in this exceptional wine. 3.18ph (higher than last year but still low enough to give clear grip). Harvest for the whites from August 18 for five days. 14h/h yield, extremely low, with 50% of the crop in Pavillon Blanc (they are introducing a 2nd white wine this year, although name not yet announced).

This under the radar Third Growth is now fully certified biodynamic and it shows in the quality of the grapes this year. A fruit-forward nose redolent of ripe blackcurrant and Morello cherries, mingles with aromatics of blackcurrant leaf, wood-spice and rain-on-slate minerality. A gently salinity propels the full-bodied palate forward through lashings of creamy blackcurrant and spiced vanilla, all supported by chewy, sandy yet ripe tannins. It finishes pretty and lifted.

The 2022 La Lagune really takes a while to settle in the glass. It eventually sheds its veneer of oak to reveal attractive blackberry, sous-bois and pencil box aromas, and an exotic element loitering just off-stage. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins that lacquer the mouth. Quite dense and muscular, yet it retains definition and plenty of freshness on the finish. Reminding me, like the 2019, of a modern-day version of the lovely 1990, the 2022 La Lagune bursts with aromas of dark berries, cassis, licorice and violets. Medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, it's a broad, sensual wine with velvety tannins and a suave, charming profile. With 13.8% alcohol, it remains classically proportioned, with a rather high pH of over 3.8 likely contributing to its open, giving style this year.

Château La Lagune (3ème Cru Ludon, Haut-Médoc) 52 Cabernet Sauvignon, 45 Merlot, 3 Petit Verdot There is stunning freshness and drive on the nose of this glorious wine, followed by a strict, linear and amazingly adroit palate. Superbly refined and beautifully delicate, these are not the hallmarks one might expect from a ‘hot vintage’! La Lagune is assembled from the ground up, built on high tensile minerality and adorned with layers of elegant, soothing fruit and hints of discreet spice. Superbly long and buoyant, this is the first vintage that is biodynamically certified for La Lagune, and this wine certainly seems to wear this prestigious badge with pride. While this is already a mesmerising wine, I sense that it will unravel slowly, relying on dynamic acidity and refreshing bitterness to provide a reservoir of energy that will propel it for decades.

Goedhuis, May 2023, Score: 91-93
A bright and energetic style, with fresh cranberry fruit and a summer herb garden scent. Relaxed and easy with its gentle free flowing flavours. The tannins have been carefully managed so they sit beneath the charm of the fruit and the light freshness at the back of palate provides additional appeal. Excellent within its second wine category.

Neal Martin, April 2023, Score: 89-91
The 2022 Lacoste-Borie, raised in 50% new oak, has an ebullient bouquet with cranberry, raspberry and wilted rose petal scents. There is a trace of melted tar. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. The 2022 shows a lovely balance, somehow carefree, with completeness and what I suspect will be enticing drinkability. That said, it has the structure to age. Drink 2026-2043

Wine Advocate, April 2023, Score: 90-92
A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Lacoste-Borie is as good a wine from this label as I can remember tasting. Exhibiting aromas of cassis, charcoal and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and lively, with excellent depth and persistence.

Decanter, April 2023, Score: 93
Deep vibrant nose, aromatic and scented with floral notes and soft hints of liquorice, earth, blackcurrants, black cherries and herbal-edged raspberries. Succulent and sharp, zingy and tangy straight away. Lovely purity and focus, smooth but fine-grained tannins make the impact and give the delicate but so appealing structure. Lovely precision and generosity here, feels elegant and lively with good fruit persistence, mouthwatering acidity and liveliness. Intense but pure, layered but almost light, with an undercurrent of wet stone and graphite giving the mineral touches alongside subtle spice. Well made and so easy to enjoy. 3.65pH. A yield of 38hl/ha. 60% grand vin, 40% second wine. Eric Boissenot consultant.

Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 17.5+
This is yet another Lacoste-Borie that over-delivers from the off. An immediate attack of glorious perfume on the nose and the palate follows with upright, strictly marshalled fruit, cassis-soaked and Pauillacais. The finish is brisk and spicy, with hints of skin tannin and seed traction, bringing some drama and tension to the chassis. Lovely and refreshing while retaining an air of deliciousness and flair, this is a fantastic wine.

Jane Anson, April 2023, Score: 92
This is full of serious Pauillac tannins, great quality, with plenty of depth to the black fruits and acidity to underpin the palate. Firm in its framework, serious and with clear ability to soften over ageing, good quality, softened by edges of damp fern and rose petal aromatics. 3.6ph, 40% of production in this wine. 50% new oak for ageing.
