Lovely, open and gentle, with superb texture and bitingly fresh finish, this is a thrilling wine with invigorating tension under a diaphanous palate. The epitome of a Côte des Blancs classic, the tender nose, crisp middle and zesty finish make it an easy to fall for and one that is difficult to put down. With a price more suited to the High Street than an elite merchant, this is magnificent Champagne.

Ex-Château Margaux winemaker Vincent Millet was rightly proud of his team for their continued work reinvigorating Ch Calon Ségur, in a year that was climatically the polar opposite of 2021. The summer heat isn’t perceptible on the nose in any way. Initially closed but dense; scents of warm cherry, blossom, and ripe plum-stone drift from the glass, wrapped in cedar and crushed stone. In the mouth there’s a cool succulence, yet enough weight to balance the firm leathery tannins, and crunchy fresh acidity. A bitter chocolate edge from the oak rounds off the mid-palate, leading to a fine-grained conclusion.

The 2022 Calon Ségur is a wine that I found "uncompromising" when I tasted it at en primeur. Now that the wine is in bottle, it has a strident bouquet that marches from the glass with blackcurrant, bilberry, cedar and pine aromas. It’s very well defined and quite classic in style with finely chiseled tannins. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and a little more saline than it showed out of barrel. Indeed, it has a tad more elegance now, though it still harks back to some of the classic postwar wines that I tasted in the past—in a good way. Very fresh on the finish, this is a sophisticated Saint-Estèphe born to give years of drinking pleasure, but my word, give it at least a decade before entertaining the idea of opening a bottle.

Neal Martin, April 2023, Score: 94-96
The 2022 Calon-Ségur was cropped at 26hL/ha compared to 36hL/ha last year. Matured for 20 months in new oak, it has a well-defined bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, cedar and subtle tobacco scents. The 2022 is tight at first but opens with aeration (winemaker Vincent Millet remarked how the wine was much more expressive the week I tasted it in mid-April compared to the previous week). The palate is classically styled with impressive mid-palate depth. With strict tannins and multi-layered graphite-infused black fruit, this is reminiscent of some postwar Calon-Ségur's I have tasted. I wonder if slightly less vin de presse would have been better? Uncompromising, perhaps that might be its virtue, but it means that patience will be required. Drink 2027-2055

The 2022 Calon Ségur is a young, raw powerhouse with huge tannins. Today, I find the 2022 impenetrably compact and hard to read. Then again, Calon Ségur was quite similar en primeur, so I can't say I am terribly surprised. For the time being, the 2022 is somewhat of a mystery.

Antonio Galloni, April 2023, Score: 91-93
I tasted the 2022 Calon Ségur two times during my recent trip to Bordeaux. On both occasions it was forbiddingly tannic, much moreso than most wines of the year. Dark-toned fruit, gravel, cured meat, leather, spice and tobacco lend intensity, but the incisive nature of the tannins never settles down. Perhaps élevage will help. We will see. My impression is that the property really struggles in excessively hot years. Drink 2030-2052.

Wine Advocate, April 2023, Score: 96-98
The 2022 Calon-Ségur is another superb wine from this historic Saint-Estèphe third growth that began a comprehensive renaissance the better part of a decade ago. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis and blackberries mingled with hints of fresh mint, burning embers, licorice and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with terrific depth at the core, supple tannins and a long, saline finish. The blend consists of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Vincent Millet observed that "when you tasted the Merlot, you were under the impression that you were tasting Cabernet."

A very juicy red with redcurrant and creme de cassis as well as hints of nutmeg and cloves. It's full and polished with very pretty tannins that show length and focus. Traditional and typical for Calon with the tannin structure. A little closed today. But serious structure.

Decanter, April 2023, Score: 96
Rich and vibrant on the nose, smells concentrated and alcoholic. Crisp and clean on the palate however with bite to the cherry, plum and blackcurrant fruit alongside a hint of sweet strawberry and herbal raspberry on the mid palate that gives some instant energy before the clear concentration and heft of the wine shows through. Not so much in the texture but in the ripe flavours, cool minty and stone edged tannins and clear liquorice and clove spice. Still taught but detailed with elements of generosity. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 3.65pH. A yield of 26hl/ha. Ageing 17 months, 30% new oak.

Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 19+
2022 is yet another incredible creation from Calon, and this time it packs more spice into its makeup than I have seen before. It appears that the Merlot has soaked up the barrel tones on the front palate, and then Cabernet takes up the baton on the middle palate and finish. They had very low yields at Calon. The berries were 20% smaller than usual, so this wine and its siblings are densely flavoured, luxurious and exotic. The key to this wine’s success is the careful handling that ensured the fruit gave up its perfume and flavours without any unwanted astringency. Despite the heat wave temperatures during the day, night-time temperatures were low, so the acidity is fine and crisp. This means there is tension throughout this wine, and it is intense, powerful and lusty but not heavy. This is a stunning, stylish and super-glossy creation for a wine of these dimensions, and it will shock Calon lovers with its bravado and generosity.

A wine that's going to flirt with perfection, the 2022 Château Calon Ségur is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, harvested between September 12 and 26, from yields of 40 hectoliters per hectare. Its deep purple hue is followed by a heavenly bouquet of cassis, smoke tobacco, flowery incense, and toasted spices. This ripe, sexy, full-bodied beauty has ultra-fine tannins, a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and a great finish. Its tannins, as well as its overall balance and purity, are just about off the charts, and this remarkable effort shows how successful the northern part of the Médoc was in 2022. Bravo!

This is powerful, underlining how much last year's more softly sculpted wine was a departure from recent vintages of Calon, and back in my mind to the complicated 2018 vintage, where it was overly marked by the heat of the vintage. This is full on concentrated fruit, with strong tannins that build through the palate. Plenty of complexity with black truffles, cassis, olive paste, sandalwood and fresh mint on the finish, along with cloves and cinnammon spice. 3.8ph, 100% new oak, 26hl/h yields. 53% Grand Vin, higher than usual. Vincent Millet technical director. Harvest September 6 to 27.

The flavours of mocha and spice give joy and pleasure. Free flowing, with finely integrated powdery tannins, this has an easy relaxed nature to it showing no signs of vine stress in the drier summer period. The 2022 Grand Puy Lacoste was picked from 7 to 23 September and contains more Merlot due to the high quality of the fruit, matured in 75% new oak. There is 14.2% alcohol. Therefore, this lends this GPL a little more precocity and sensuality compared to other vintages, not cut from the same "classical" cloth as, say, the 2019 or 2020. Underlying this velvety veneer are enticing traits of freshly-rolled tobacco and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-sculpted tannins. Silky smooth in texture, so much so that it belies that backbone underneath. There is a peacock's tail of mineral-rich, quite peppery black fruit on the finish, completing a Pauillac endowed with huge potential. Drink 2030-2065

I really do like the ease of this, it's not trying too hard but delivered with poise, punch and purity. An excellent wine that really over delivers - so well presented, detailed, finessed and refined but still with the strength coming at the end in the wave of liquorice, dark chocolate and wet stone terroir markers. A brilliant wine with potential to deliver such excellent drinking pleasure. I love it. 3.57pH. A yield of 38hl/ha. 60% grand vin, 40% second wine. Eric Boissenot consultant. Harvest 7-23 September. This is a classically dimensioned GPL with fine bone structure and lovely grace. The vintage conditions seem not to have affected this property like they did others, and there is a lovely, mouthwatering, saline hint under the luxurious blackcurrant fruit that brings freshness and lift on the finish. The shape and delivery of the beautiful flavours found here are also classical, linear and honed, and there is none of the excess showiness or exuberance that I have seen on both sides of the Gironde. Knowing that GPL remains honed, direct and dependable is life-affirming, and fans can indeed breathe a sigh of relief. This will be a long-lived vintage, not least because the calibre of the tannins here is tremendous. The density/delicacy ratio is captivating, and there is no need to rush to open and bottle because this unhurried wine is confident, lip-smacking and cut from imperial Pauillac cloth.

Fully deserving of its promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé A, Figeac’s technical director Frédéric Faye has made a superlative 2022 wine. Comprised of almost equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, it highlights the strength of the property’s soils to cope with both the drought and heat. Taking into consideration the exceptional quality of the fruit at harvest time, Frédéric took a more delicate line on his vinification in 2022, focusing on lighter extraction and cooler fermentation temperatures to preserve both aromatics and finesse. A herbal lift from the glass gives way to black cherry, cassis, tobacco leaf, graphite and cedarwood. With noticeably full fruit, the taut, well-defined structure is reminiscent of the Médoc, sitting comfortably alongside the abundance of black fruits and the fine yet powerful tannins. Extraordinary persistence. A classic in the making.

The 2022 Figeac was picked between 1-26 September with the pH of 3.7 and 14% alcohol. This wine combines both Left Bank and Right Bank traits due to its blend (as usual), but this year leans more to the Right Bank despite a slightly lower contribution of Cabernet Sauvignon. It is very well defined, fresh and shows lively black fruit, incense and nuanced Chinese tea aromas. The palate is beautifully balanced with a lightly spiced entry, fine depth and with plenty of concentration counterbalanced by finesse toward the graphite-infused finish. A towering, statuesque Saint-Émilion, the 2022 Figeac is positively stellar. What a wine. The 2022 was bottled at the end of July 2024, a bit late by current standards, so it is a bit reticent. What impresses most is the wine's total integration and balance. All the elements are in the right places. The 2022 Figeac is one of the wines of the vintage. Unfurling in the glass with a deep and complex bouquet of dark berries and cassis mingled with hints of violet, pencil lead, mint and cigar wrapper, it's medium to full-bodied, dense and concentrated, with striking intensity and sweetness of fruit married with unerring precision and energy, concluding with a long, penetrating finish. Abundant but exquisitely filigreed tannins lend a sense of classicism and proportion to a wine that might otherwise be flamboyant. As I wrote from barrel, it's the quintessential Figeac, testament to the late Thierry Manoncourt's vision to plant such a large proportion of Cabernet, and on drought-resistant rootstocks. Such is the inherent complexity of Figeac's terroirs that harvest took place sub-block by sub-block between September 1st and 25th. 2022 Figeac has all of the ingredients of a monumental wine. In common with other estates that have made incredible wines this year, the fruit was pristine when it arrived at the winery. Then the skills of the winemaking team were deployed in not extracting any more depth of flavour or perfume than was necessary. A gossamer-smooth extraction and a cool, long fermentation were all that was needed to create one of the silkiest and most enchanting wines on the Right Bank. The deep-rooted Cabernets hold firm here, with Merlot decking the powerful Cab structure in beautiful finery. It is easy to get lost in the flavour, but the tannins mount a stealthy attack twothirds of the way into the experience, warning that this is a gloriously serious wine with a very long life ahead. Powdery, laser-sighted, drenched in graphite, and with ultra-fine sootiness, this is a masterclass in how tannins can make a delicious wine into a genuinely exultant experience. This is my favourite young Figeac of all time. As I left the Château, I walked through the winery, explicitly designed to isolate individual parcels of fruit to increase the complexity and intricacy of the final blend. It is clear that this new facility has had a profound effect on 2022 Figeac, and I have a feeling that this is not the first time that I will go gaga for a new Figeac release. By all accounts, Petit Figeac is a wine worth tracking down, too, although I am sworn to secrecy as to why.

A beautiful wine that, shockingly, reminds me of the 2016, the 2022 Château Figeac checks in as 35% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc, and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon that was harvested from the 1st of September to the 25th. Director Frédéric Faye commented that verasion took longer than usual, and they had to do a slight green harvest to get uniform ripeness. The results are stunning. The wine has a vivid purple hue as well as remarkable freshness and purity in its black and blue fruits, which are followed by notes of wild herbs, chocolate, graphite, spring flowers, and a touch of classic Cabernet Sauvignon graphite. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a silky, elegant mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. This classic, ultra-precise Figeac is going to warrant a solid decade of bottle age and be very long-lived given its purity and balance.

Vibrant damson in colour, edges of gunsmoke and red rose petals on the aromatics, as you so often find in Figeac, with dense cassis, black cherry, incense, graphite, slate, mint leaf, cocoa bean, cappucino and liquorice on the palate. This is creamy but airy, and full of joy. Close to the 2016 vintage in its construction and effortless confidence, no question of the ageing ability of this wine, and a fine vintage to mark the first year as Premier Grand Cru Classé A. Breaking down how they got here, you find inevitably careful winemaking with no pumping over, cool 26C for fermentation, making use of techniques learnt in the hot, dry summer of 2018, from cover crops to minimum green harvesting. Blend finished including 8% press in March, 3.7ph, harvest began September 1, earliest on record, until 26, second vintage in new winery. Frederic Faye director.

Antonio Galloni, February 2010, Score: 97
The 2006 Barolo Rocche shows incredible definition in detail in its perfumed, floral personality. The 2006 is not as explosive as the 2004 was at this stage, but it is eerily reminiscent of the 1989 in its sweet, Pinot-like fruit. With time in the glass, the fruit gains even more clarity while the bouquet blossoms with incredible grace, all supported by ultra-fine, silky tannins. Today the Rocche is soft and relatively accessible, but it is sure to firm up in bottle. In 2006 the Rocche saw 30 days of maceration on the skins and was aged predominantly in cask with a brief spell in French oak in between for the malolactic fermentation, a blend of traditional and modern approaches that has yielded phenomenal results here. Of course, everything starts in the vineyard, and Vietti's commitment to low yields means that they are among the first growers to harvest in most vintages. 2016 - 2031

This vineyard lies at the foot of Les Caillerets, but its soil composition is quite different; more clay and pebbles result in a fuller, broader style of Volnay. A deep and intense wine, dark cherry, hints of black forest, pepper and spice. The firmer clay soil contributes to the muscle and feeling of direct power. The tannins sit tightly underneath, breathing freshness and energy into such an excellent wine.

This is my pick of the Rossignols. It is more expressive and textural than the others and is precisely what I look for in elite Volnay. The tannins are fresh and clean, and the potential is clear. Medium-weight, nicely detailed, and with a long finish, you will be rewarded if you can wait for it to unfurl fully.

If anything slightly more transparent than Les Quartz from the same producer. Another cask sample. Light rim. Very fragrant yet spicy. Tastes very strongly of Mourvèdre with that gamey/animal/oily metal combination. It is certainly a novelty and very brooding and dry on the end but I actually think I personally prefer the lift of the Quartz - even if it is a bit sweeter and more mainstream for the appellation. But this is serious, very thick stuff with more than a hint of dried prunes and is very good wine. Drink 2018-2032

From the domaine's 1.5-hectares, the usual 20 barrels was reduced to half for the 2012 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru. It has an opulent, vivacious bouquet with small dark cherries, blueberry and crème de cassis that is deliriously gorgeous. The palate is sweet on the entry with fleshy boysenberry and bilberry fruit. There is good presence and length here, although it needs just a touch more nuance on the finish. Always a solid performed, this comes recommended.

The 2020 Léoville Poyferré is quite backward on the nose, gradually unfurling with aeration to reveal introspective black fruit, licorice and touches of bay leaf. Returning after 20 minutes the aromatics develop life-affirming pixelation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation—very pure and silky in terms of texture. This is lavished in some high-quality new oak, but there is plenty of fruit underneath. It will take several years to fully cohere, but it should be worth waiting for. This is stunning. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2020 Léoville-Poyferré is a powerful, structured wine. In recent vintages, Léoville-Poyferré has been more opulent, but the 2020 shows off a towering, vertical build framed by a soaring spine of tannin. Dark red cherry, pomegranate, cedar and spicebox emerge with a bit of coaxing. Ultimately, though, Léoville-Poyferré is less showy than most Saint-Juliens at this stage. I don't expect that will be much of an issue in time. In a word: magnificent. Tasted three times.

The 2020 Léoville-Poyferré is every bit as impressive as it was from barrel. If anything, it has gained in freshness and vibrancy with élevage. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, graphite and a kiss of French oak are some of the many notes that infuse the 2020 with tons of character. I especially admire its vertical energy and buttoned up personality. In some recent vintages Léoville-Poyferré has been quite showy, but the 2020 also has a more nuanced side that is hugely appealing. Drink 2028-2050

LP is all about controlled delivery and restraint in 2020. The nose is reticent and measured with fascinating depth and intrigue. This is not a bigger wine than the others in this portfolio but it is considerably longer! The message is black-fruited and admirably pure, but there is a cloak of tannin around its core which prevents me from getting too carried away. It was worth persisting with my sample bottle because it opened considerably over half an hour and I even went back to it a day later to see if there was even more movement in its flavour. Of course, there was! There is a faint, wild mulberry note which grows among the blackcurrant and blackberry themes, like ivy up the front of a stately home and this magical component interweaves exoticism and flair among the order and regimented Cabernet notes. All in all, this is a tremendous wine and I am always in awe of wines that build gracefully and deliberately on the palate ending with a fanfare of class and distinction.

The perfume is astounding on this succulent wine with coffee beans, dark chocolate, Mirabelle plums and blackberry jelly confounding the senses. The oak is typically strident, too, with lashings of carpentry jousting with the fully ripe fruit. Of course, it is all in balance in spite of the overt enthusiasm of the components and, in common with the finer wines of this vintage, there is a cool, refreshing, mint-spiked finish that snaps the palate back into shape. While this may not be the most detailed Roc de Cambes in recent vintages it certainly provides a lot of fun on the palate and I applaud its generosity and joie de vivre.

Tasted first as four individual parcels, each of which are vinified separately. The blend incorporates the young vines (35-55 years old) and old vines (65-98 years old) grown across the climat’s four blocks. Paul attributes the young vines with giving spice, acidity, and fragrance, whilst the old vines carry the 30% new oak to provide structure and power. The completed cuvée is an absolute cracker; stunningly aromatic, with wild bramble fruits and hints of Arabian spice. Smooth tannins finely balance the fruit and freshness. A very composed and grand style, this has huge length and legs for aging. Superb.

The 2018 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru has an exceptionally well delineated bouquet with black cherries, iodine, incense and orange liqueur, traces of mint developing with time. There is still some wood to be assimilated - it just needs time. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy opening, gentle grip and superb mineralité. The 2018 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was tasted from the four component blends and an assemblage. I must say that although I would like to have reported about the obvious difference between parcels of various vine age and soil types, I would describe them more as variations on a theme, the differences more nuanced than I have found in other vintages. The final pre-prepared blend has a delineated bouquet of blackberry, raspberry and cranberry scents, more floral than expected, with pressed rose petals and orange blossom emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and the 30% new oak extremely well integrated, with savory hints toward the persistent finish. This is just superb. 2024 - 2055

A soft dollop of wood frames the distinctly earthy aromas of plum, black pinot fruit and violet that are definitely ripe yet remain nicely fresh. The mediumbodied flavors possess a beguiling texture and fine mid-palate concentration thanks to the abundant dry extract that serves to buffer the firm and vaguely rustic tannic spine supporting the balanced and beautifully persistent finale. This is marked by the warmth of the 2018 vintage yet even so, it manages to remain inviting and refreshing. In a word, excellent. Outstanding. Drink 2030+

As ever we tasted the component parts before the blend which averaged 33 hl/ha overall, with beautiful, healthy grapes very few of which had suffered from sunburn. Here is my note on the blend: Purple with just a trace of black. The nose needs teasing out. This is more tightly knit than the individual cuvées. As much black fruit as red and with time the density begins to show, along with some spicy notes at the rim. Very intense finish, tannin swathed in noble deep red fruit.

Wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of raspberries, cherries, peonies, spices, orange rind, cassis, woodsmoke and espresso roast, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, its lively and concentrated core of fruit framed by rich structuring tannins, concluding with a long and sapid finish. This promises to number among the Côte de Beaune's wines of the vintage, and it will be well worth seeking out.

Goedhuis, November 2009
Aromatic with alluring notes of roasted coffee on the nose. On the palate, it is notably relaxed with firm, yet velvety tannins. This is a powerhouse of a wine that is quietly confident and has nothing to prove (but it impressed us anyway). Philippe feels that this wine represents the character of the vintage best.

An expressive and elegant mélange of oak trimmed and very spicy red and blue pinot fruit aromas nuanced by hints of violets and the expected pungent Gevrey earth that is also picked up by the rich and particularly full flavors that possess a natural sweetness, which serves to buffer the firm tannins on the wonderfully persistent finish. A lovely and entirely classic Bèze that is built to age. Drink: 2020+.Notes: from a parcel of 1.5 ha of vines planted in 1949.

Not many wines take up a full page of notes in my tasting book, but this certainly did, so here is the abbreviated version! Strong, deep, chocolate-coated fruit aromas. This is a sensational wine, full of succulence and beautiful lusciousness. It has an extraordinary balance between harmony and weight with an incredible weight of fruit. Impossible to fault this wine, the lovely juicy flavours are supported by a fine freshness of fruit. Sensational.

(the aggregate size of this holding is a whopping 3.4 ha and Ponsot is easily the largest holder in Clos de la Roche). In stark contrast to the expressiveness of the Clos St. Denis, this is almost mute and even aggressive swirling liberates only the briefest glimpses of wild red berries and earth notes. There is superb size and weight to the imposing and overtly muscular flavors that also enjoy an incredible amount of dry extract that confers a supple and seductively textured mouth feel to the highly concentrated mid-palate. The presently buried tannins are intense and markedly firm though not hard on the explosively long finish that seems to go on and on. This should be something very special if given sufficient time to reach its apogee. 2032+

Neighbouring Le Chambertin, Clos de Bèze is truly a great Grand Cru vineyard. This beautiful wine is full of flamboyant dark summer fruit flavours; it is a full and rich wine with excellent restrained power. Here the elegant and pure nose is reticent but exceptionally pretty with its mix of super-fresh red berries, rose petal, spice and discreet earth wisps. There is very fine underlying tension to the powerful and solidly concentrated big-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract on the youthfully austere, compact and very much built-to-age finish. This markedly serious effort will need time and especially in magnum format. Don't miss! Drink 2042+

This excellent 1er Cru is in the middle of the village lying below Clos de la Roche Grand Cru and never lacks confidence. The brilliant location and aspect are apparent. Tempting blackberry crumble with a touch of cocoa powder, the intense flavours from the small vintage berries is evident. This is extremely concentrated and a wine for cellaring.

The 2016 Le Pape, matured in 33% new oak, has a classic blackberry, cedar and graphite bouquet that you might almost mistake for a Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. It feels rounded in the mouth and more approachable than many of its Pessac-Léognan peers. Touches of cedar and pain grillé appear toward the finish. Enjoy over the next six to eight years. 2020 - 2028

Neal Martin, April 2017, Score: 90-92
The 2016 Le Pape is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon picked from 3-4 September and on 14 October respectively. It is matured in 30% new oak, although my sample contained 50% (which was accounted for in my assessment). It offers plenty of raspberry coulis and crushed strawberry aromas on the nose, the new oak nicely integrated, quite generous and almost opulent in the context of the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a splash of soy on the entry, a keen line of acidity. There is a touch of austerity towards the saline finish, but that will abate by the time it is bottled. This is a fine Château Le Pape from "l'equipe" Haut-Bailly. Drink Date 2020 - 2032

So elegant, right from the first nose. The fourth vintage under Haut-Bailly ownership (because they declassified the 2013), this has appealing rich caramel and coffee bean edges and is beautifully elegant. (from vines that abut those of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in Richebourg proper). Here the equally broad ranging nose is actually similar to that of the Romanée St. Vivant but it’s both cooler and even more restrained with a bit more floral influence as well. The intensely mineral-driven broad-shouldered flavors are an exercise in refinement with tremendous depth of material that pushes the very firm tannic spine to the background on the palate staining, explosive and stunningly precise finish. This has fabulous upside potential. Drink 2026+

The fruit for this high-class Grand Cru comes from four sources, two by Ladoix with a high clay content, and two in Aloxe Corton which boast a little more limestone. Smoky wild berry scent, liquorice and blueberry. There is a firm tension within this wine, showing the importance of the proportion of clay in the soil. Hugely layered, very much a baby but the potential is huge. This is a sensationally classy wine from the hill of Corton.

The 2022 Moulin Saint-Georges is a heady, deep wine. Blue-toned fruits, leather, licorice, mocha, spice and tobacco are all packed into the wine's mid-weight frame. Dense and quite potent, Moulin Saint-Georges will benefit from a few years in bottle, which will help it shed some baby fat.

The 2022 Moulin Saint-Georges is quite rich and dense in this vintage, as is to be expected. Super-ripe red cherry fruit, blood orange, menthol, spice and leather fill out the layers in a Saint-Émilion that boasts tons of fruit density and the tannins to match. All the elements are very nicely balanced. Readers should expect a Moulin Saint-Georges that is more power than finesse. I imagine the 2022 will age beautifully on its fruit. It could very well turn out to be a sleeper in this vintage. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc picked between September 19 and 26. Aging is projected to be 18 months in French oak. Spicy oak and powerful fruit notes make this an instantly impactful wine. There is superb length here, too, and it is not particularly exotic, sticking to the familiar Merlot fruit spectrum dotted with violet and herb notes coming from the Cabernet Franc.
