Mostly Grenache blended with some old vine Carignan (and I think some Cabernet Sauvignon), the 2000 L’Ermita is a beauty that’s still youthful. Deep ruby/plum-colored, with a smoking nose of pencil lead, ripe black cherries, blackberries, and crushed rock, it hits the palate with a full-bodied, powerful, yet pure and beautifully balanced profile. This is a fabulously pure, even elegant Grenache that still has sweet tannins and a blockbuster finish. Even at age 19 it still has another decade of longevity. Drink 2019 - 2030. 97 points. The east facing slopes of Clos du Roy combine soils of clay and chalk and make wines of great distinction. A very striking style, with tayberry, violet and cinnamon perfumed nose. The palate is appealingly juicy and plush. Spiced and dark mocha flavours, the tannins are silky in style: this is a bit of a showstopper. Lovely!

The 2012 Barolo Ravera is once again a star. Finely cut and chiseled throughout, the 2012 boasts striking precision and nuance. Rose petal, chalk, white pepper, cranberry and pomegranate burst forward in a brilliant, exceptionally polished Barolo built on pure, sculpted elegance. Over the last few years Vietti has done a tremendous job in taming the intense Ravera tannins while preserving all of the focus that makes the wines from this site so alluring. The Ravera has been fabulous on the two occassions I have tasted it so far. 2022 - 2042

The most flamboyant and hedonistic of the domaine’s cuvées. As the name suggests, this is the warmest location at the domaine, with south facing slopes that are bathed in sunshine. Aromatics of spice, toast and cinnamon dusted tarte tatin. There is such charm and exuberance to this wine, with its creamy richness and lovely flavours of freshly buttered crumpet. Totally, irresistibly delicious!
-
Burghound, October 2024, Score: 89-92
Here too the nose is dominated by secondary fermentation aromas with even more evident wood toast where the latter is also present on the dense and very generously proportioned flavors that possess an opulent mouthfeel before ending in a lingering finish that is supported by lemon-tinged acidity. This is certainly promising in its fashion though it's never my favorite for the simple reason that I always find it to be over-oaked for my taste.

Goedhuis Waddesdon, April 2025, Score: 97-98
No wine expresses better the importance of terroir, meticulous work throughout the year, and most importantly, why Cabernet Sauvignon is King of the Médoc, than Lafite 2024. Patience was the name of the game here; 96% of the blend is comprised of Cabernet picked in October, allowing for full fruit maturity from the best parcels on the Lafite plateau. A scintillating array of aromatics, sloe, damson and blueberry with a touch of herbal lift. It quite simply flows across the tongue, with sandy, fine-grained tannins. Very composed in nature, with subtle graphite undertones, lavender florality and pomegranate lift all in the mix. There is no doubting the breeding of this wine, this is an absolute thoroughbred!
-
Neal Martin, April 2025, Score: 95-97
According to Technical Director Eric Kohler, the 2024 Lafite-Rothschild was picked from September 23 to October 7 and underwent a short vinification—less than three weeks—plus a gentle extraction. The blend includes 16% vin de presse. It has an understated and typical Lafite nose with crushed stone infusing the black fruit, black olive tapenade and marine scents. It comes across as statesmanlike, which is just how you want your First Growth, even in a tricky vintage like this. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh saline notes on the entry. Tensile from the start, this has very impressive focus and is a tad more peppery than previous vintages. This is an assured Lafite-Rothschild with a very seaweed/Japanese wakame-tinged finish. Very promising and one of the very few "cerebral" Left Bank wines in 2024.

Antonio Galloni, April 2025, Score: 94-96
The 2024 Lafite-Rothschild is a sensual, elegant wine very much in the style of the year. Plush and enveloping, with lovely forward fruit, the 2024 is very Lafite, perhaps a bit reticent, but super-expressive just the same. Black cherry, pomegranate, blood orange and a kiss of espresso all build in the glass, framed by quintessentially finessed Lafite tannins. The 2024 is sublime. I expect it will be one of the top wines in the Médoc when all is said and done.

A more Burgundian vintage for Lafite, with cedar, graphite, paprika, white pepper and fresh red fruit. Nuanced and refined, with a medium body and understated fruit. Intensity and concentration. It shows the Lafite hallmark of elegance, with more fluidity and crunch this year. Very long and delicate. 96% cabernet sauvignon, 3% merlot and 1% petit verdot.

Matthew Jukes, April 2025, Score: 19+
It’s always lovely to taste with Saskia de Rothschild, and her fabulously chilled-out comment, “This is an early drinking, accessible Lafite for a new clientele”, is certainly accurate, although I am sure old duffers and even middle-aged wine connoisseurs will be queuing up for this vintage, too. Whispers abounded that the Lafite family of wines would be endeavouring to attach CPR pads to the notion of En Primeur purchasing by coming out early and with eye-catching prices. Let’s hope this is borne out because this is not only a wine for newcomers and experts alike, but if this vintage turns out to be anyone’s first sip of this famous First Growth, it is a cosmic place to start. Linear, lithe, cool, chiselled and dynamic, this is a long, pure, pristine wine with hints of sea spray, fresh-picked blueberries and thrillingly carnal new leather nuances among the glorious summer pudding core. There is musicality, levity, grace and direction here, and the very first words at the top of my tasting pad were ‘modern Lafite for a new era’! The control and beauty found are effortless and sensationally well-balanced. The tannins and acidity lose nothing in translation, balancing the medium-weight fruit with trueness and thrilling sense equilibrium. Forget vintage reports, the various trials and tribulations and Lafite’s own running theme of battling through the elements while rounding Cape Horn on a galley; this is quite simply as ‘Lafite’ as any vintage I have tasted in a long while, and the fact that it tastes so singular, identifiable and delicious, makes me love it more. I am awarding a QP here on rumour alone. Let’s hope I don’t delete it in post-production!

Rich texture, this stands head and shoulders above many in the vintage, with graphite, crayon, cassis bud rather than exuberant black fruits, this is precise, savoury, delineated, floral, gunsmoke, juicy, captures the effortless elegance that Lafite does so so well, and it totally delivers. Harvest 23 September to 7 October, 32hl/h yield, above the Pauillac average, 16% press wine included in the blend. Director Eric Kohler's 33rd year in Pauillac. I am giving a slightly earlier begin drinking date, but I am certain this will age exceptionally well as Lafite always does. Slightly earlier starting date for drinking than usual, eight years following harvest.

The 2017 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Les Ouvrées Rodin Grand Cru comes from a single parcel that has been bottled separately since 2010, though it had always been vinified on its own. Erwan Faiveley told me that it is broader in style than the regular cuvée, possibly because of massal selection. It has a lucid ruby color and a very intense bouquet of dark red cherries with touches of undergrowth, wild heather and hints of Japanese nori. The palate is medium-bodied, offering thicker tannin than the regular cuvée, and deeper and more powerful, yet I actually prefer the finesse shown on the regular cuvée. This is perhaps a bit more refined than it usually is and a wine that should age well over the medium to longer-term. Drink 2030+

Domaine A F Gros has some excellent parcels within the village of Vosne Romanée. Clos de la Fontaine often makes the lightest, prettiest, silkiest Vosne in their portfolio, and is usually the first to enter its drinking window. With sweet raspberry fruits, this has an appealing crisp, crunchy bright fruit character. It is very pure, with subtle richness on the finish.

A very slight hint of volatile acidity sits atop the agreeably spice aromas raspberry and Asian-style tea. I very much like the texture of the caressing and nicely vibrant flavors that terminate in a dusty, stony and youthfully austere finale. Drink 2024+

The 2018 Ermitage le Pavillon is a plush, full-bodied beauty that combines fruity notes of blueberries with savory notes of black olives and marries them together with rich, earthy notes. Almost creamy across the mid-palate, it finishes with soft waves of velvety tannins. I expect this will firm up a bit prior to bottling, then drink well for two decades. Drink 2022-2040

Suave, mineral- and spice-accented aromas of blackberry, cherry liqueur and pungent flowers show superb clarity and energetic lift. Sappy and penetrating in the mouth, displaying sharply defined black/blue fruit, violet pastille and spicecake flavors that turn livelier as the wine opens up. Finishes extremely long and minerally, with intense, spicy thrust, a repeating floral note and gently chewy tannins.

As usual, Chapoutier's 2018 Ermitage l'Ermite is a standout among standouts. Crushed stone, blueberries, even a touch of herb feature on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is cool and crunchy but also ripe and generous. It's rich and long, with a firm, granitic structure that should enable two-plus decades of aging. This has it all. Drink 2025-2045

The floral and spice notes carry emphatically through an impressively long, youthfully tannic finish that leaves a smoky mineral flourish behind.

Here the nose is spicier still with plenty of floral elements present in the form of violet, rose petal and lilac that add elegance to the assorted red berry and exotic tea aromas. There is much more volume to the muscular, intense and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that possess plenty of power on the focused, very firm and moderately austere finish. The underlying material is excellent and this should amply reward 8 to 10 years of bottle age. Note too that in contrast to some of the wines in the range this is not a good candidate for early consumption. Drink 2021+

Here too the nose is quite restrained and requires aggressive swirling to coax the aromas of cool and softly spice black cherry, violet, plum and earth. There is excellent volume and power to the palate coating big-bodied flavors that deliver fine length on the mocha-infused finish that flashes a touch of youthful austerity. This is even a bit more structured than the Grands Echézeaux so I would advise acquiring it with the express intention to exercise at least moderate patience. Drink 2035+

Goedhuis, January 2011
Undoubtedly a contender for one of my wines of the vintage, this is a truly fabulous wine and shows why so many people are describing 2009 as a Nuits year. Lovely intense loganberry and raspberry aromas, this is full of intense ripe fruit, rich and flamboyant whilst also incredibly structured due to the tiny berries from these 70-year-old vines. A truly great wine in the making.

A more deeply pitched nose offers up notes of wood spice, earth and plum aromas that are, not surprisingly, less elegant but denser as are the serious, concentrated and powerful medium weight plus flavors that benefit from seemingly endless amounts of sap yet the hugely long finish is still quite firm. This should age extremely well though patience will be required. Drink: 2019+.Comments: sweet spot outstanding!

The 2019 Ermitage L’Ermite Blanc comes all from the l'Hermite lieu-dit located up above the Le Méal and around the Chapelle, which is a mix of granite and limestone soils. This cuvée sees a touch more new oak and is brought up 90% in 25% new demi-muids and 10% in stainless steel tanks. It's a more chiseled, backward (which is usual) wine that has intense white currants and stone fruits as well as brilliant honeysuckle, licorice, and celery seed nuances, with a liqueur of rocks-like minerality. With flawless balance, full-bodied richness, and a powerful, concentrated, structured style on the palate, hide bottles for 8-10 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 30 years. Goedhuis, June 2020
The oldest vineyards in the Chapoutier stable of Hermitage vineyards, considered their jewel in the crown. This is a 3ha plot of 80 year old vines at the very top of the hill on hard granite soils. A wine full of vibrance and life, a blend of cranberry and blueberry with hints of cocoa and mocha. The initial attack is all about refinement and subtlety, which then evolves with a crescendo of dynamic fruit flavours. The tannins are tightly woven, giving a strong central core to the wine, a high degree of purity, a brightness of fruit and oozing with masses of long-term aging potential. A truly brilliant wine.

Coming from vines just above the Le Méal and around the Chapel, the 2019 Ermitage L’Ermite is 100% Syrah that was brought up in just 20% new French oak. It's a massive wine by any measure and reveals a dense ruby/blue hue as well as incredible smoked meats, cassis, graphite, white flowers, and a liquid rock-like minerality. These all carry to a full-bodied, pedal-to-the-metal Hermitage that has building tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and incredible length, all while staying light on its feet and flawlessly balanced. It shares some similarities to the 2018 yet might be even more concentrated.

A striking contrast to the Greffieux, this 4ha plot sits at the very top of the Hermitage hillside and is immediately striking in character. A wine full of personality, it has an array of aromas from yayberries, damsons and black cherry. Whilst the fruit flavours are very open, it is bolder in style with a more masculine tannic edge. An extremely intense wine with both depth and density, everything is perfectly integrated between, fruit, alcohol, freshness and tannic structure. Imposing and high class.

The 2019 Ermitage Le Pavillon comes from the Bessards lieu-dit, which is just to the west of the Le Méal, but the soils are drastically different, with the Bessards being pure broken granite soils, and in this reviewers opinion, the best terroir in the world for Syrah. Thrilling crème de cassis, gunflint, acacia flowers, violets, and spicy nuances give way to a full-bodied, powerful, yet elegant Hermitage that has incredible class in its tannins, flawless balance, and the depth and length to evolve for 30+ years. (a monopole of the domaine). A brooding but well-layered nose combines notes of both red and dark currants, earth, floral tones and a hint of the sauvage. The rich and unusually supple mediumbodied flavors possess fine mid-palate concentration before culminating in a more refined finish than usual that delivers excellent length and only a trace of rusticity. I have said this several times recently but since 2009 this wine has become noticeably more interesting. Drink 2022+

A Goedhuis favourite, and we are fortunate to receive the entire UK allocation of this beautiful cuvée.
