Firm reduction dominates the fruit today though it does appear quite ripe. Otherwise there is excellent freshness to the racy and nicely detailed flavors that possess a velvety mid-palate texture that contrasts somewhat with the crunchy and slightly rustic finale.

While there again is some menthol character present it's more subtle on the slightly less complex aromas of various dark berries that are laced with warm earth and spice nuances. The gorgeously intense if slightly less concentrated medium weight flavors possess a succulent but muscular mouthfeel while delivering fine length on the slightly firm and grippy finale. Patience again strongly counseled.

A very toasty and menthol-infused nose offers up plenty of sauvage and earth elements on the mostly wild dark currant scents. The rich, round and velvet-textured flavors possess good mid-palate density though the finish is overtly woody. While this may eventually eat most of its wood, it's not completely clear that it will ever successfully integrate all of it. Drink 2028+

Good dark red. Nose dominated by animal reduction. Then wonderfully silky and fine-grained on the palate, albeit with slightly reduced flavors of black fruits and menthol. Not yet showing much finesse--in fact, the back end is a bit clenched--but the tannins are quite suave. In an awkward stage today but holds out serious potential.

Goedhuis, April 2015, Score: 94-96
With such a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (87%) in the blend, this was slightly reserved at the time of tasting. Dense and opaque in colour, this is a full robust style, packed with cassis and black cherry flavours. The characteristic freshness of the vintage provides an additional layer of complexity; this will reward patience and has the typical Lafite mantle of understated class.

Neal Martin, March 2018, Score: 95
The 2014 Lafite-Rothschild has an incredibly fruit-driven bouquet with layers of black cherries, cassis, raspberry preserve and menthol aromas all beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet core of intense red berry fruit laced with white pepper, sage and a hint of fennel. The balance here is exquisite and the manner in which it fans out on the final third is just glorious. You could actually broach this now, it is so drinkable, but it has the substance to suggest long-term ageing. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Neal Martin, March 2017, Score: 95
The 2014 Lafite-Rothschild, tasted with head winemaker Eric Kohler, has retained that very opulent and outgoing bouquet that dare I say actually reminded me of Mouton-Rothschild. There are layers of blackberry and boysenberry fruit, still that hint of juniper berry, certainly a more extrovert Lafite-Rothschild compared to recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, very focused and quite linear, again with plenty of black fruit laced with cedar and tobacco. It begins to clam up towards the saline finish, suggesting that it will need several years in bottle, but I still have high expectations for this First Growth once afforded several years in bottle.

-
Neal Martin, April 2015, Score: 94-96
The Château Lafite-Rothschild 2014 is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, picked from 22 September until 10 October with the Petit Verdot, the Cabernet finished two days earlier. The Grand Vin is adorned with surprising richness and opulence on the nose: layers of ripe black plum and juniper, fine definition with even a hint of fig developing with continued aeration. After 5 minutes it turns volte face and becomes much more graphite and cedary - more Pauillac in essence. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, a potent core of black and blue fruit with a bullish (for Lafite) peacock's tail on the finish. Very long in the mouth, this is a Lafite that yearns to compensate for last year and it accomplishes that with some panache.

-
Antonio Galloni, April 2015, Score: 92-95
A rich, powerful wine, the 2014 Lafite-Rothschild boasts superb depth, nuance and class. Hints of plum, cinnamon, wild flowers and exotic spices are woven throughout, but the flavors remain quite primary. The delicate, brilliant finish points to a bright future for a Lafite that should start to drink well with minimal cellaring. The blend is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. In 2014, the Grand Vin accounts for 38% of the production.

Decanter, April 2015, Score: 95+
Lovely floral nose and almost understated compared to Mouton – just a line of clarity and fruit purity that doesn't need description. Fine tannins and that wild violet lift over a firm textured depth of fruit, all in perfect harmony. Drink: 2022-2045

Jancis Robinson, April 2015, Score: 17.5
87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc. Nuanced, very healthy crimson with a ruby rim. Tea leaves on the nose. Rather severe palate with marked tannins quotient. Very Cabernet indeed – but Cabernet that is far from opulent. A bit more stolid than most Lafites. Bone dry and without the beautiful aromatic lift that characterises the best vintages. A bit short on charm. Drink 2025-2040

A wine that proves that Bordeaux doesn’t have to be full bodied to have concentration and ageing potential, this is a gloriously refined red that doesn’t show its 100% new oak. An airy cool, pure and elegant red pinot fruit nose also reflects hints of spice and wet stone. The lacy medium-bodied flavors possess a strikingly refined mouth feel as the tannins here are also dense but quite fine. This red is so thick and rich it's almost oily in texture, with exotic flavors of black fruit, game, dried herb and hoisin. Impossible to fault this wine, the lovely juicy flavours are supported by a fine freshness of fruit. Sensational.

(the aggregate size of this holding is a whopping 3.4 ha and Ponsot is easily the largest holder in Clos de la Roche). In stark contrast to the expressiveness of the Clos St. Denis, this is almost mute and even aggressive swirling liberates only the briefest glimpses of wild red berries and earth notes. There is superb size and weight to the imposing and overtly muscular flavors that also enjoy an incredible amount of dry extract that confers a supple and seductively textured mouth feel to the highly concentrated mid-palate. The presently buried tannins are intense and markedly firm though not hard on the explosively long finish that seems to go on and on. This should be something very special if given sufficient time to reach its apogee. 2032+

Just below Richebourg, this vineyard has deep rich layers of clay and the wines always show the stunning cranberry and red cherry fruit so typical of Vosne Romanée. This is gradually becoming my favourite of the Vosne grands crus. This is a polished, poised wine and a superb portrayal of how grace and elegance can lie beside power and intensity. Beautifully perfumed in a red fruit style, the tannins are silky and lace-like. So long and so very graceful.

The 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak like all the domaine’s grand crus, has a tightly wound bouquet of black cherries, raspberry coulis and touches of bergamot tea and briar. Lovely definition, but bashful at this early stage. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a smooth texture. I set the bar high when approaching a glass of GPL and so the fall would be particularly painful if this wine let my ambitious standards down. It is all the more gratifying when this wine, year after year, soars high above my hopes and it has the magnificent knack of looking accurate to its commune, its estate and also the vintage in 2020, bringing these threads together in a flavour which is wonderfully full, refreshing, elegant and complete. Nothing is rushed here, with layer upon layer of Cabernet, romancing the palate and the tannins are a juicy and resplendent as it gets. The 2020 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a more fleshy, textured Pauillac that still plays in the concentrated, focused, structured style of the vintage. Ripe black cherries, currants, toasty oak, chocolate, and tobacco leaf notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, richly textured 2020 that has velvety tannins, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish. Do your best to hide bottles for 4-5 years and enjoy over the following 20-25 years or so.

Concentrated, ripe, round and with richness and flesh, the big, juicy gulp of chewy cassis in the endnote is exactly what I was looking for. Wait 8-9 years and enjoy it over the next 2-3 decades after that.

As is usually the case, the larger-scaled flavors possess more size and weight if not the same refinement or minerality as the Latricières where the supporting tannins coat the palate on the grippy, serious and youthfully austere finale. Unsurprisingly for a vineyard that sits between Romanée St Vivant, Echézeaux and Richebourg, this 1er Cru is highly esteemed. This is a Vosne Romanée that possesses muscle, and is happy to show it off. Sometimes when tasting young its overall intensity can be overpowering, but this 2020, whilst having all Suchots’ intrinsic fullness, also has a pleasing harmonious nature. Dark fruits, fresh espresso coffee and a touch of vanilla pod, this has so much going on and will progress even further in bottle.

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru is very pure on the nose with macerated small dark cherries, violet petals and light aniseed aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, good depth, quite sweet in the mouth and maybe just a little confit-like towards the finish, that does not quite exude the class of their top Nuits-Saint-Georges. 2025-2045 91-93

A more elegant and significantly better layered nose reflects notes of various dark berries, cassis, exotic spices and a hint of violet. There is once again excellent vibrancy to the velvet-textured and refined middle weight flavors that also coat the palate with sappy dry extract before terminating in a punchy and surprisingly powerful finale. Worth considering. Outstanding. Drink: 2030+

I was expecting a richer wine with more texture and more depth than the Clos des Forêts Saint Georges, but this is a more backward, tense, contemplative and serious wine, and it is fantastic. The potential here is superb, yet it will be a slow-moving wine, so the wait will be interminable. However, I am certain that this will be a superb wine, and it may take two decades to get there.

66% whole bunches, not racked. The bouquet suggests a velvety richness to follow. This has revived very well since my initial tasting, with a weight of fruit behind the fresh red fruit aspects at the front of the palate. Quite intense, with a lively finish. Once again, the use of the whole bunches seems to lengthen the finish. Just 13.5% which helps

The vineyard lies at the Pommard end of the village and shares some of its neighbour’s iron-rich soils. It is always the first parcel to be picked at the domaine, but sadly the volumes this year are minute. With intense, wild alpine fruits, this has a firmer tannic Pommard-esque core. Structured, muscular and powerful, this has great weight and will benefit from ageing to show its fine mature Pinot identity.

The 2020 Volnay Les Frémiets 1er Cru is more earthier on the nose than the Village Cru and demonstrates more red fruit, touches of tobacco and Early Grey emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red berry fruit, quite saline with a dash of white pepper towards the finish. If you don’t manage to grab the Clos des Epeneaux this year, try to get your mitts in this. Drink 2025 - 2045

A notably ripe yet still appealing fresh nose includes notes of both red and dark raspberry, anise and just turned earth. The slightly bigger-bodied flavors possess a finer mouthfeel while delivering notably better depth on the stony and sneaky long finish where a touch of austerity slowly emerges. Good development potential here. Outstanding. Drink 2028+

The first to be harvested, as it always is. 13.8% alcohol. Deep fresh purple. The nose also is a little fresher, a little stricter than the earlier wines in the line-up. A crisper style of raspberry. The tannins are firmer and the oak shows a little (sample taken from a one year old barrel) but the finish is exemplary and all in balance.

Clos de la Fontaine often makes the lightest, prettiest, silkiest Vosne in the AF Gros portfolio, and is their first Vosne to enter its drinking window. This is the last year that the domaine will make this cuvée due to a vineyard reorganisation amongst the cousins within Vosne Romanée. A lovely final year! Poised, fresh and pure, this has characteristic elegance, with beautiful tayberry flavours and a fine long finish.

The name Cazetiers derives from the Latin meaning for fortified place and this is one of Gevrey’s most esteemed 1ers Crus. A little shy aromatically, however on the palate it shows its true colours. With a perfume of tayberry, loganberry and violets, this is rounded and full showing a high quality of ripe fruit content. The tannins are pitch perfect, with clarity, freshness and a wonderfully long finish.

Considered amongst the elite of 1ers Crus in Gevrey this is another higher positioned vineyard, some 300 metres above sea level. Erwan says if Lavaux is Béze, this is Chambertin, facing east in the same direction as all the great Grands Crus. Wonderful aromas of tayberry, nutmeg and cinnamon. It starts off so pure and refined and then, like a skilled orchestra, builds gently in the palate, showing subtle volume and power. This is truly exceptional and has the hallmarks of a great wine in the making.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has a very well-defined bouquet with vivacious red cherries, strawberry and crushed rock aromas. This has a little more attack than the Lavaux, partly because of the low yields, under 20hl/ha. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a little creaminess in texture on the entry, very smooth with a slightly candied finish that just compromises its potential delineation. Still, this should drink well for 15- to 20 years. Drink 2026 - 2048

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino from Sesti draws you towards the glass with a display of dried red cherry strawberry, blood orange and Mediterranean herb notes with hints of cedar supporting in the background. Although the fine silky tannins are evident at this stage, they play a supporting role to the bright red fruits and refreshing acidity. This is a beautifully balanced 2017. The only challenge will be whether you can keep your hands off it long enough to watch it fully mature!

The Sesti 2017 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a fine garnet color with medium richness. In terms of aromas, you get dried cherry, blackcurrant, spice, tar and camphor ash. The aromas are presented with extra intentional emphasis in this hot vintage that saw an accumulation of sugar and tannins in the berries. Sangiovese kicks in with its naturally high acidity that serves to counter and break up some of that power. 12,800 bottles were produced.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Charmes-Chambertin les Mazoyères Grand Cru has a lighter bouquet than its peers, a little simplistic for a grand cru although it does improve in the glass, becoming savory with hints of dried blood. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, good weight if missing sophistication and breeding, showing a slight bitterness towards the dry finish and yet you cannot help but feel this is going to turn into a lovely Charmes-Chambertin. Maybe this is enduring a dumb phase ... you will just have to wait it out. Tasted September 2016. Drink 2022-2042

This is also markedly floral though here the undertones of soil, humus, forest floor and fallen leaves is much stronger on the assorted red berry infused nose. There is a lovely sense of tension to the detailed but powerful and muscular big-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract on the balanced, intense and lingering finish where the shaping tannins are quite firm but relatively fine. Healthy dark red. Superripe, liqueur-like aromas of red cherry, damp earth, tobacco and dried rose. Lush, sweet and rich but also very pure, conveying a strong impression of terroir to its powerful flavors of dark fruits, minerals, spices and Gevrey earth. Turns drier and more classic on the back end. A very dense example of Charmes-Chambertin, but then these vines are in Mazoyères. The salmon color of the 2006 Rosé Brut with its pink and orange reflections is already magic and most probably unique. And then comes the nose: less subtle and discreet, but fine and elegant, deep, ripe and fleshy, with raw meat, nougat and licorice flavors intermingled with pure red berry (currant) and cherry aromas. Can you imagine this Rosé is based on the Réserve Brut (60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay)? It is, but before the bottling and second fermentation, approximately 15% of still red wine (Pinot Noir) from the crus of the Montagne de Reims is added. This extraordinary Rosé Champagne is produced only in limited quantities and has been aged seven years before its release. Medium to full-bodied, smooth and fruit intense on the palate, this is another highly elegant and perfectly balanced Pol Roger fizz with a beautiful Pinot perfume in the finish. This is very sensual though complex Champagne that covers your tongue with pink silk. If you don't mind, I'd prefer to call this an excitingly erotic Champagne that I would love to drink on its own, but in any case not alone. 95/100. Date 2016-2021

Moderate wood influence can be found on the overtly sauvage-inflected red currant, plum and earth-scented nose. The supple and round medium-bodied flavors possess a velvet-textured mid-palate that is really quite seductive though the natural muscle of a Gevrey 1er shows up on the saline and ever-so-mildly rustic finale. The 2015 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru has the most composed bouquet of Laurent Ponsot's grand crus from the Gevrey appéllation, with seductive scents of black cherry, wild strawberry and crushed violet. A wonderfully spicy, elegant and fresh nose blends notes of red and dark cherry with those of cassis, plum, violet and discreet earth nuances. The intense and tautly muscular middle weight plus flavors are even more refined if perhaps not quite as mineral-driven while delivering superb length on the balanced but markedly austere finish where a touch of cherry pit emerges. This is also very clearly built-to-age and I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle for at least 10 years and it should easily reward 20. Drink 2035+
