En Primeur | Chassagne Montrachet

The white wines of Chassagne Montrachet can be difficult to distinguish from Puligny. At their most typical they are slightly fleshier and more hedonistic, but are often just as mineral and refined making the two almost inseparable. When distinguishable, they offer notes of honeysuckle, lime blossom and honey. Many have become quite approachable when young.

Introduced in 2023, these are Bruno’s oldest village vines, planted by his grandfather in 1955. Just 0.03 ha of vines below Criots Bâtard in the lieu dit of En Journoblot. He only makes 600 bottles, and the wine has the volume and generosity of its prestigious Grand Cru neighbour. A beautifully creamy style, with characters of almond paste and brioche, full, weighty and very long.

A tiny section of 2 hectares within the more recognised Premier Cru of Morgeot, Bruno’s plot is just ¼ hectare of 70-year-old vines. A creamy nose, with some fresh almond and oaked spice. Full and intense on the palate, with a dry matter, tannic structure. Weighty and self-confident, with a rewarding flavoursome finish of fresh clotted cream and spiced cinnamon bun.

Bruno owns 1.7 hectares in 9 different locations with an average age of 65 years, making this a very complete example of village Chassagne Montrachet. Golden lemon-yellow colour, with an array of white peach and nectarine aromatics. A tight earthy structured palate, with lots of substance and the finish lifts with flavours of kumquat and fudge.

The envy of the village, this vineyard sits between Le Montrachet and Criots Bâtard Montrachet and is just over 1 hectare in size. Bruno is one of seven lucky growers to have a piece of the action. Stylistically though it is more reflective of Bâtard Montrachet, always so full of opulence, characters of banana toffee, spices with a slight smoky edge. Opulent and flamboyant with its exuberant crème anglaise and pain aux raisins flavours on the finish. All the dimensions of a Grand Cru.

The historical site of an old hemp field, this is a slightly cooler location amongst the Chassagne Premiers Crus and therefore creates wines with natural energy and brightness. One of Bruno’s smallest cuvées, so volumes are carefully restricted in a year such as 2024. A very classical style, combining the earthy notes we seek from the appellation with both fullness and tension. Plenty of citrus fruits, lemon posset and sorbet, mix well with hints of a vanilla pod sweetness. A gorgeous lift of acidity on the finish both refreshes the wine and gives length and complexity.

This Premier Cru is a higher vineyard location in the direction of St Aubin, producing a wine with both power and richness, which tends to be one of Bruno’s earlier maturing Premiers Crus once bottled. Initially a little more citrus than some years and then the florality and subtle creamy nature that is always so apparent in this cuvée evolve and show their colours. Charming with instant appeal.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2025

The fruit for this Premier Cru is sourced from a highly revered grower in the village of Chassagne. Chenevottes is a relatively cool site, resulting in a leaner, more delicate expression of Chassagne. The nose is a little more giving than some years, with notes of fresh clotted cream fudge and crème anglaise. The initial feeling of rounded breadth combines perfectly with a lovely mineral bite. The ideal combination between body and lifted acidity.

La Maltroie is a Premier Cru that always makes its presence felt, characterised by its breadth and generous fruit. From three different parcels planted between 1952 and 1989. An array of warm exotic summer fruits, quince, tangerine, passion fruit and prickle of lemon sherbet. This is the full Monty, with its creamy generosity, and finish of toasty Crunchy Nut Cornflake. Long and wonderfully indulgent.

Morgeot is the largest Premier Cru in the Côte d’Or at 58 hectares, surpassing even Clos Vougeot (51 hectares). Unsurprisingly therefore, there are a huge variety of styles and quality levels. Coming from 60-year-old vines planted in 1963, Bruno’s parcel is at the forefront of quality for the appellation. A fragrance of Jersey cream and lychee, extensive flavours of freshly baked bread and buttered croissant, this has real substance with its fine weighted texture. Long and classy. (We had the 1990 with Bruno made by his grandfather and it was sensational, still so alive – it keeps!)

One of Chassagne Montrachet’s flagship Premiers Crus sitting just above Grand Cru Chevalier Montrachet. The higher altitude, rocky location produces a wine with extraordinary intensity and mineral direction. This is a wine which combines charm and grace, with a drive of mineral energy. Such a beautiful cuvée with subtle characters of fresh apricot and pink grapefruit; it is so full of life and zest. Superb.

A relatively unknown Premier Cru lying close to St Aubin, Les Vergers always stands out in Bruno’s cellar and is a favourite of ours. An easy-going, accessible style, with charming white floral characteristics, jasmine and narcissus. Soft and silky in the palate and made perfectly complete by its finish of whipped Chantilly cream. Lovely.
