En Primeur | Chassagne Montrachet

The white wines of Chassagne Montrachet can be difficult to distinguish from Puligny. At their most typical they are slightly fleshier and more hedonistic, but are often just as mineral and refined making the two almost inseparable. When distinguishable, they offer notes of honeysuckle, lime blossom and honey. Many have become quite approachable when young.

In 2023 Bruno has made a special selection in celebration of his most prized vineyard parcel of village Chassagne Montrachet, planted by his grandfather in 1955. With only 700 bottles made, we are delighted to have received a very special allocation of this fabulous cuvée. Golden yellow colour, there are layers of structure here, highlighting a depth of flavour one expects for an old vine cuvée. Notes of quince and Seville orange intermingle with aromas of kneaded dough and freshly baked baguette. Full and concentrated, with dry matter structure and long sustaining finish.

A tiny section of 2 hectares within the more recognised Premier Cru of Morgeot, Bruno’s plot is just ¼ hectare of 70-year-old vines. Aromatics of pink grapefruit and freshly squeezed limes. Charming on the palate, with notes of kumquat and peach. A graceful silky, honey like texture and fresh fruit salad flavours are given a mouthwatering freshness by the lift of acidity at the end.

Bruno owns 1.7 hectares in 9 different locations with an average age of 65 years, making this a very complete example of village Chassagne Montrachet. Golden lemon-yellow colour, this has a delicious expression of the high-quality ripeness of fruit this vintage. The palate shows apricot and mango with layers of jersey cream, leading to a long and firmly structured finish.

The historical site of an old hemp field, this is a slightly cooler location amongst the Chassagne Premiers Crus and therefore creates wines with natural energy and brightness. This is one of Bruno’s smallest cuvées, so volumes are carefully restricted. With exotic fruit aromas of kiwi and melon, the wine builds carefully on the palate, giving the impression of muscle and strength, with lots of indulgent cream and warm brioche flavours. Confident and bold, with great persistence on the finish.

This Premier Cru is a higher vineyard location in the direction of St Aubin, producing a wine with both power and richness, but tends to be one of Bruno’s earlier maturing Premiers Crus in bottle. Opulent and warming, with flavours melon and kumquat, A very free flowing style, with a pleasing buttery sensation and gentle white nectarine flavours on the finish, refreshed by a light saline aftertaste.

The fruit for this Premier Cru is sourced from a highly revered grower in the village of Chassagne. Chenevottes is a relatively cool site, resulting in a leaner, more delicate expression of Chassagne. Fresh lemon zest, quince, and toasted almonds can be found on the nose, while the palate has a delightful pithiness that balances the wine’s natural weight. Charming.

La Maltroie is a Premier Cru that always makes its presence felt, characterised by its breadth and generous fruit. From three different parcels planted between 1952 and 1989, the initial scent is more on the reserved side than some years. The palate is authoritative however, with a compellingly earthy, terroir-driven personality, offering rewarding flavours of banoffee pie and hazelnut and a classy lift of freshness at the end.

Morgeot is the largest Premier Cru in the Côte d’Or at 58 hectares, surpassing even Clos Vougeot (51 hectares). Unsurprisingly therefore, there is a huge variety of styles and quality levels. Coming from 60-year-old vines planted in 1963, Bruno’s parcel is at the forefront of quality for the appellation. With flamboyant aromas of pineapple and grapefruit, the palate is characterised by flavours of buttered toast with a focused core of grape extract, giving substance and depth.

One of Chassagne Montrachet’s flagship Premiers Crus sitting just above Grand Cru Chevalier Montrachet. The higher altitude, rocky location produces a wine with extraordinary intensity and mineral direction. Greengage, quince and lemon zest leap from the glass. The palate combines poise and composure; this is a wine with a natural presence. There is nothing ostentatious, possessing the perfect balance between minerality, energy and subtle yet concentrated fruit depth.

A relatively unknown Premier Cru lying close to St Aubin, Les Vergers always stands out in Bruno’s cellar and is a favourite of ours. An easy-going, accessible style, combining flavours of apricot and quince with a gossamer veil of smoky oak. A very generous volume, with a charmingly lacy, creamy texture. Extremely approachable and will give huge pleasure as a youthful early drinker.

Made with 45-year-old vines from four separate lieux dits, this is an exemplary Chassagne Rouge. An energetic red wine, with fresh red fruit and cranberry characters. The tannins are carefully interwoven with the fruit, and it has a lovely soft sumptuous finish.
