En Primeur | Domaine Charles Audoin

Rugby-loving Cyril is the 5th generation of Audoins in the commune of Marsannay, the Côte de Nuits’ most northerly appellation covering 400 hectares. Today Marsannay is rightly gaining the recognition it deserves as a fine source of high-quality red wines, not least thanks to Cyril’s efforts, amongst others. Indeed, the commune has 14 lieux-dits which have been proposed to the INAO for a long overdue upgrade to 1er Cru status. Whilst this might not be immediate, it reflects the respect that Marsannay and its best vineyards are rightly held in today.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

Named in honour of Cyril’s great-grandmother, who lost her husband in World War One but still managed to keep the estate intact to pass on to the next generation. The fruit for this cuvée comes from the domaine’s oldest vines in five different locations across the Marsannay commune and as such makes for a fantastic expression of the village style. A forward and charming nose is immediately giving with vivid notes of violet, wild mint, and sun-blushed red cherries. Pure, juicy and bright, with supple, rounded tannins, this is a delightfully easy drinking Pinot. Smiles all round.

  • Burghound, January 2025, Score: 87-90

Fresh, ripe and layered aromas include those of poached plum, earth and a whiff of wood. The succulent, round and delicious middle weight flavors possess good verve that carries over to the bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. This could use more depth but a few years of cellaring should help.

2023 Marsannay Les Longeroies Charles Audoin

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

Under consideration as a Premier Cru, the Longeroies vineyard sits at the north of the Marsannay commune and is split in two, with the upper part sited on limestone slabs and the lower composed of reddish marl. With ripe Morello cherry and grenadine notes on the nose, generous fruit in the mid palate and plush, supple tannins, this cuvée shows more influence from the heavier marls of the lower Longeroies. A velvety expression of Pinot with immediate charm, a hint of savoury heather and gentle, blood orange acidity bring additional layers of interest to the finish.

  • Burghound, January 2025, Score: 90-92

Once again very ripe yet agreeably fresh aromas display notes of poached plum, earth and spice along with a kirsch top note. The seductive, sappy and beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors that aren't quite as mineral-driven as those of the Clos du Roy but offer slightly better depth on the impressively long and youthfully austere finale.

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2025, Score: 17.5+

This is always a good wine and in 2023 it soars above the competition, and I mean many of the wines from next door, Gevrey-Chambertin, too. Floral, bright, fairly dry and unforced, this is a bold style and one that will age and develop evenly and with purpose.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2025, Score: 16.5

Roses and quince and sour cherry juice. Playful and yummy. Touch of fresh bay leaf. Delicately gritty and muscular tannins. Playful but seriously good quality and tremendous clarity and focus on the end. (TC)

2023 Marsannay Clos du Roy Charles Audoin

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024, Score: `

Located to the north of the commune on a steep, east-facing slope over a bedrock of hard Comblanchien limestone, this vineyard produces one of Marsannay’s more powerful wines. Sometimes a cuvée that needs time to show its charms, the 2023 does not conform to type and was already bright, open and joyful when tasted in November 2024. Brimming with vibrant notes of redcurrant, freshly picked raspberries and a hint of wild herbs, the limestone influence of the terroir really comes through in the mineral-driven acidity that provides shimmering tension throughout the red-toned core. A subtle tannic grip and a hint of bitter almond bring a pleasing bite and complexity to the finish.

  • Burghound, January 2025, Score: 90-92

This is aromatically similar to the Cuvée Ragonneau but with a healthy dollop of floral elements. There is both more volume and notably more minerality on the caressing and punchy medium weight flavors that deliver better length on the balanced and youthfully austere finale that is noticeably more structured. As such, at least a few years of bottle aging are recommended.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2025, Score: 16.5

This takes me straight to an old school room. Wooden desks, ink, red apples, chewed pencils. Sturdy but delicious, a kind of kindly square comforting balance. Sweet, sweet raspberries on a pretty long finish. These Charles Audoin reds are all pretty delicious. GV (TC)

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

A very charming cuvee, combining Cyril’s ability to produce very suave Pinot Noir wines impressing in their youth with the body and texture one expects from the Côte de Nuit’s most structured appellation. Full, intense with an intriguing sweetness of fruit, finishing with lift and freshness.

  • Burghound, January 2025, Score: 88-90

Firm reduction dominates the nose. On the palate there is both excellent detail and vibrancy if only average density to the delicious flavors that also conclude in a youthfully austere bitter pit fruit-inflected finale.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2025, Score: 17

Super-sweet fruit. Boom! Spilling out the glass. Outrageously expressive, a carnival of bodaciousness. Strawberry sherbet. I think there might be tannins buried in there? Too yummy for words. I'd snap these Charles Audoin wines up. GV (TC)
