En Primeur | Domaine Coffinet-Duvernay

In our view this fine domaine is an unsung hero from the village of Chassagne Montrachet. This is in part probably due to its youth, having only been founded in the mid-1980s following the marriage of Philippe Duvernay from Givry in the Côte Chalonaise and Laura Coffinet, a member of one of the most established families in Chassagne. They have created an enviable 7-hectare domaine with unusually all their vineyard holdings exclusively in just one commune, that of Chassagne Montrachet, including some of the finest sites the appellation has to offer.

    This extraordinary Premier Cru parcel is the envy of all the growers in the village: a unique plot of vines just below the great Le Montrachet! It has all the volume of its famed neighbour, a full and broad style with flavours of apricot and nectarine sitting comfortably alongside nutty, creamy sweetness. No shortage of power, with an almost tannic dry extract finish. A brilliant wine all round.

    Pale lemon yellow. The bouquet suggests weight but does not add other detail, as yet. Broader shouldered up front with a lemony note behind, satisfying and succulent but I think I shall prefer Masures when that settles down. Saline note to finish. Rebounds at the end.

The father and son team of Philippe and Bastien have a philosophy of keeping it simple. The fruit arrives from the vineyard in the best condition possible and, instead of the current fashion to cold soak prior to pressing or fermenting, they like to ferment immediately in cask, letting the natural rise in cellar temperature enrich the lees and feed the wine. If required, they operate a very cautious use of bâtonnage on certain cuvées.

Pricing

  • IN BOND prices exclude UK Duty and VAT. Wines can be purchased In Bond for storage in Private Reserves or another bonded warehouse, or for export to non-EU countries. Duty and VAT must be paid before delivery can take place.

  • RETAIL prices include UK Duty and VAT. Wines for UK delivery can only be purchased this way.

Additional Information

  • Duty Paid wines have been removed from Bond and cannot subsequently be returned to Bond.  VAT is payable on Duty Paid wines. These wines must remain Duty Paid but can be purchased as such for storage subject to VAT.

  • En Primeur wines can only be purchased In Bond. On arrival in the UK these wines can either be stored In Bond in Private Reserves or another bonded warehouse or delivered directly to you. When you decide to take delivery, Duty and VAT at the prevailing rate become payable.

    If you buy for storage, your wines will be transferred automatically on arrival.

  • DP: Duty Paid. Wines for immediate UK delivery must be purchased Duty Paid. VAT is payable on Duty Paid wines. Wines which have been removed from Bond cannot subsequently be returned to Bond. They must remain Duty Paid but can be purchased as such for storage subject to VAT.

  • EP: En Primeur. These wines are lying in the Domaines’ cellars until shipping. They can only be purchased In Bond. On arrival in the UK these wines can either be stored In Bond in Private Reserves or another bonded warehouse or delivered directly to you. When you decide to take delivery, Duty and VAT at the prevailing rate become payable.
