En Primeur | Domaine de Bellene

Nicolas Potel established his négociant business in 1997, a year after the death of his father and the sale of Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, which Gérard Potel had long managed. Initially bottling under his own name, from the 2008 vintage onwards the estate has been known as Domaine de Bellene. Since the 2007 vintage, the domaine has operated from superb historic cellars on the Dijon road out of Beaune. He held dear the historic négociant values, finding and blending the best cuvées to represent the individuality of an appellation. His verbal contracts with growers throughout the Côte d’Or allowed him to maintain positions in the most prized vineyards.

2025 has been a devastating time for the Potel family, with the tragic death of the legend, Nicolas Potel at the end of June. Such a charismatic man and an excellent winemaker, many of the team at Goedhuis Waddesdon were lucky to have had a wonderful relationship with him, built over 25 years of close collaboration. He is survived by his three children Alphonse, Antonia and Emilien, who have taken over the helm in an extremely impressive manner.

Nicolas named this cuvée after his mother's uncle who was the driving force behind the family purchase of Domaine de la Pousse d’Or. A lovely blend of two small Premiers Crus, Haut Jarrons and Peuillets, from 60-year-old vines. The wine has aromas of black liquorice and punnets of raspberries with light vanilla sweetness. Broad and structured, it has a mineral freshness with firm tannins and a dark plum character. Very enjoyable.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2025

Made in honour of Nicolas’s mother, this is a blend of six Premiers Crus: Teurons, Pertuisots, Montée Rouge, Bressandes, Clos du Roi and Reversées. A flagship cuvée for the Domaine, representing the very best of what Beaune Premier Cru can offer, the yields were generous for the vintage at 30hl/ha and were the first vineyards to be picked. Very pretty nose with ripe red fruit and a fresh, floral note. A touch more savoury on the palate, with layers of redcurrant, raspberry and red cherry. Charming, mineral tannins and an impressively long finish. This will age well.
