En Primeur | Domaine Jacques Carillon

The old sign hanging from Jacques Carillon’s cellar doors, with a crouched vigneron sickle in hand and a simple date 1532, sadly hangs no more since the brothers split the family domaine in 2010. The sentiment though remains. The Carillons are a Puligny dynasty, whose hands have arguably touched more of the famous commune’s soil than any other. Jacques Carillon represents the seventh generation managing 5 hectares, the majority of which lie in Puligny. His humility in producing some of the finest white wines in the Cotes is extraordinary to behold, his outlook is one of simplicity summed up in his thoughts: “The pleasure of wine is a pleasure linked to the memory of both the ground and man.”

A cooler location with very stony soil structure lying on the border of St Aubin and Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers produces a wine full of energy and vitality. The 2024 vintage is Jacques' first vintage for this cuvée (he replanted his ½ ha plot in 2020) and it already epitomises the appellational identity perfectly. Soft clementine citrus aromas, with a focus on purity and a lovely feeling of vigour, with lifted freshness and mouth-watering salinity at the end.

These relatively young vines were planted in 2013 but perform in quality as if they are significantly older. The domaine style for crisp purity shines though, not a rich fat broad Chassagne, but one of racy vibrant citrus fruits with a subtle and long nutty finish.

  • JMO, October 2025, Score: 88-90

Clear pale lemon yellow. The bouquet of the Chassagne is softer and a little more sensual than the Puligny. Plenty of energy on the palate, evidently adequately ripe, attractively balanced. Medium length, the vines are now old enough for this cuvée to show well, albeit with less stuffing than the Puligny. Drink from 2027-2029.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2025

From 40-year-old vines, this a fresh, bright zesty Puligny, which comes from seven different lieux dits starting on the Meursault side, some in the middle of the village and the final plot close to Chassagne so a very complete example of the commune. A charming mandarin-scented nose. Honeyed and poised, with a glossy clarity. Refreshing and persistent. The perfect expression of village Puligny Montrachet.

  • JMO, October 2025, Score: 89-91

As is usual, the village Puligny has not yet been fully assembled, so we tasted its component parts, now in their various tanks. The first tank is quite exotically perfumed, lime blossom too, fresh and with good acidity, with a softer charm to the fruit behind. The second shows a lime tint to the colour, less exotic fruit, fresh apples, a little more density. The third tank hasn’t fallen clear yet, so crisply reductive, before a pure orchard fruit behind. A little more substance overall. Good length here. The fourth also not quite clear., showing the most weight to the nose, and indeed body on the palate. Overall, this should be an attractive and even reasonably substantial Puligny, which will be accessible quite early. Drink from 2027-2030.
