2023 Volnay Origines Nicolas Rossignol

Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024
A blend of four unique plots, housing vines aged between 10 and 60 years old, this is a complex wine that belies its village status. The limestone-dominant parcels at the top of the hill bring refreshing minerality and a bright fruit profile, with fresh red cherry and cranberry notes that make it charming from the off. Meanwhile, the heavier clay soils towards the bottom of the slope bring power and depth to the core of the cuvée; a superb example of Nicolas’s skill.
2023 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles Nicolas Rossignol
£335.00 In Bond-
Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024
From the warmer Clos de Angles site in the centre of Volnay, the clay soils here produce a broader style and a wine that is always self-assured. Perfumed with bramble fruit, black cherry, and violets, there is an inky intensity as reflected in its dark hue. The palate is lively, with more dark fruit held aloft by electrifying freshness and supportive tannins akin to a bassist surfing the waves of an enraptured crowd.

Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024
At a little over 2 hectares, Nicolas Rossignol owns the largest portion of Les Santenots, a Premier Cru site that in fact lies wholly within Meursault. Here, the vineyards sit on large rocks of limestone with pockets of red, iron-rich soil, which produce wines that have the textural depth of Pommard, but without the boisterous tannins. Certainly, this is a ruminative, complex wine, yet its charming black berry profile, delicate spice, and juicy fruit-flecked tannins keep things utterly joyful.
2023 Volnay 1er Cru Chevret Nicolas Rossignol
£445.00 In Bond-
Goedhuis Waddesdon, Deember 2024
Due to its location, Chevret is something of a mixture between neighbouring Santenots and Caillerets, but with a little more richness and less minerality on the finish. On the nose, there are wild blackberries, sweet cedarwood, and star anise, while the palate, with its corduroy-like tannins and soft texture, starts off gently before finishing with a mouthwatering, enlivening freshness.

Jancis Robinson, January 2025, Score: 16.5
Mid crimson. Like the Ronceret, this smells very ripe without being overripe. On the palate, those stewed fruit flavours dominate. This is not really the style I want to drink but it is deliberate and well made in this style if you are seeking ripeness and richness. (JH)

2023 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets Nicolas Rossignol
£590.00 In Bond-
Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024
This is an exceptional example of one of Volnays finest Premiers Crus. The quality of fruit and ripeness of stalks and pips was such in 2023 that, unusually, Nicolas decided to whole bunch vinify 20% of the fruit. In doing so, he has absolutely hit the jackpot. This is an exceptional wine: sweet, juicy, wild berry fruits, vigorously full of life with a fine drive of mineral texture, firm on the finish, with great length. High class in every way.
2023 Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots Nicolas Rossignol
£740.00 In Bond £888.00 Inc VAT (£148.00 Per Bottle)-
Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024
From the lower slopes of Pommard, there are parts of the vineyard which were planted way back in 1900, resulting in an extremely intense and concentrated wine. Once again, this wine was vinified using 100% whole clusters, such was the quality of fruit from these exceptional old vines. The nose displays intense black cherry and blackberry fruit, with a nod towards sweet liquorice and black pepper spice. With its soft, ripe tannins, concentration of fruit, and geniality, this is a Pommard which perfectly sums up Pinot Noir from 2023. It will age like a dream too!
