Offer | Roda I Rioja Reserva 2016

2016 Rioja I Roda Reserva at £228 per 6 bottles IB is a real winner. Leading critic Matthew Jukes sums up our thoughts beautifully: “It is without a shred of doubt, the finest Roda I Reserva I have ever tasted.” Roda I is predominantly Tempranillo. In 2016 the team added a small percentage of Graciano from the cool plateau of Rioja Oriental to give extra lift and freshness. Like us, the critics are seriously impressed, Decanter has awarded the 2016 95 points and James Suckling 96 points, who describes it as "so balanced and layered with a rich yet fresh feel”.

In the 2019 Roda I, I found notes that I had found in many 2019s—ripe black fruit, an earthy touch and a touch of dark spices. It's medium to full-bodied, combining power, concentration, ripeness and elegance in a clean and modern style. It matured in French oak barrels, 50% of them new, but it’s not really noticeable, for 16 months. 128,034 bottles produced. Drink 2024-2032.

Immense depth and exuberance here. Fine spices, dark plums, fresh blackberries, blueberries, graphite and crushed stones. Naturally concentrated, broad, vertical and full-bodied, but still fluid and linear. Crumbled, dusty tannins grow on the palate, leading it to a juicy, tightly wound finish that goes on and on. One of the best Roda I? Drinkable now upon decanting, but much better from 2025.

  • GWL, October 2024

Roda have a knack for producing irresistible, modern style Riojas and the 2019 reserve is another knockout. On the nose, there are notes of ripe blackberries and cinnamon spice that are indicative of the vintage, with added sweetness in the form of crème de cassis and vanilla pod. No doubt there is power here, yet the judicious use of oak and careful tannin management means that the flavour profile of black fruit and tapenade remain defined throughout. There’s nothing wrong with drinking this now or in 20 years’ time. Drink 2024-2045.
