Wills Domain 2023 Chardonnays

Margaret River is a young region as winemaking goes, but this corner of Western Australia is home to some of the world’s finest Chardonnays.

Wills Domain was founded in 2000 by Darren Haunold, resurrecting a family legacy dating back to 14th century, when his ancestors were wine merchants to the royals of Europe. Fast forward seven centuries, the estate has seen its star rise at a rapid rate.

The estate is set on 20 hectares of the Yallingup sub-region of Margaret River, where the sun-soaked slopes of the Gunyulgup Valley meander towards the Indian Ocean. A combination of irrepressible Aussie sunshine and bracing maritime influence bring superb complexity of fruit and mouthwatering freshness.

There is a similarity with the Paladin Hill, but the difference is barrel selection. This comes from Northern Wilyabrup, plus some estate grown chardonnay and some Karridale chardonnay. All barrel fermentation and 10 % new oak. A combination of barriques and puncheons. It’s loaded with light lemony grapefruit and melony fruit characters. The minerally acidity provides an excellent balance. Small amount of malolactic fermentation. Supremely balanced.

Bright and vibrant, the Eightfold nose is teeming with freshly grated lemon zest and sweeter notes of white peach, as well as subtle touches of brioche. With 9 months on lees and 10% new oak, there is a textural richness on the palate, yet a tributary of salinity cuts through to keep the wine feeling light and refreshing. Proof that Burgundian elegance doesn’t require Burgundian prices.

This is 55% Karridale and 45% Wills Domain. It was all handpicked and it shows. This is a wine of finesse and style. Some slightly toasty characters in there. Thid has about 40% new oak in here. The oak is beautifully applied with its subtle restraint. The toastiness comes from the new oak puncheons. Has a dry savoury and slightly flinty finish. Slightly briny with a chalky thread to the acidity. Some slight solids influence adds a subtle complexity. Has tremendous palate intensity.

Taking things up a notch, the Paladin Hill Chardonnay 2023 possesses wonderful power and concentration of fruit, with riper notes of nectarine and touches of lemon curd on the nose. The palate has textural richness and further complexity, wtih delicate accents of salted cashews, toasted brioche, and a wet stone flintiness that brings a liveliness to the finish. 100% French oak, of which 40% is new, this is another extraordinary effort and goes to show that Margaret River really can challenge Burgundy for world class chardonnay.
