CHÂTEAU L'ÉVANGILE | POMEROL, BORDEAUX, FRANCE

L' Évangile's Grand Vin is a true balancing act: powerful but well-rounded, sharp but soft. It is a reflection of its environment - on the right bank, in the heart of the vines: a house made of Bordeaux stone, planted in legendary gravel and clay soils, a place where ideas and experiences abound.

Juliette Couderc has been the Technical manager of Château L’Evangile since September 2020. The adventure at DBR Lafite, began in 2017, when Juliette accepted the ambitious assignment as head of viticulture at the Domaine of Long Dai in China, before being appointed technical manager. Originally from the Charente-Maritime, Juliette dedicates a large part of her free time to high-level sport: first in athletics, competing four times in the French championships, and in rugby, becoming champion of France in the Fédérale 1 competition with the Narbonne team.

Through a mystery of geology, the southeast Pomerol plateau features a long line of surface gravel. Three vineyards, including Château L’Évangile, share this rare soil. The property is bordered to the north by Château Pétrus and separated from Château Cheval Blanc in Saint-Émilion to the south by nothing more than a secondary road. The vineyard covers 22 hectares, made up of sandy clay soil with pure gravel, on a subsoil containing iron residues. The grape varieties consist of Merlot (80%) which contributes to the wine’s fruity flavour, body and its unmistakable suppleness; and ‘bouchet’, the local name for Cabernet Franc (20%), which brings finesse and structure. Château l’Évangile was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild in 1990 from the Ducasse family.

PROCESS OF PRODUCTION

PROCESS OF PRODUCTION

L'Évangile is a house where bees and horses, wine growers and farmers, cross paths. A house where, barely after stepping through the red wooden doors, you find yourself in the vines where Saskia de Rothschild and her team watch over and care for their Merlot and Cabernet Franc. In the cellar, subtle research and work takes place, never forgetting the raw materials given to us by the vines. Today, everything has been replanted and is learning to adapt to the rhythm of organic farming. Here the table is always set to receive guests, be they the curious or the expert, over a steak grilled on those same vines.
