  • Goedhuis, April 2004

Plump and hedonistic thanks to its relatively high proportion of Merlot ( 39%), this is an outstanding Clerc Milon. Sweet and rich with a mouthfilling structure, it will make delicious mid term drinking.

  • Robert Parker, April 2006, Score: 91

The dense ruby/purple-colored 2003 is surprisingly fresh and crisp, displaying no signs of the vintage's extreme heat. This full-bodied, powerful, rich, backward, dense, tannic effort revealsnotes of Chinese black tea, creme de cassis, licorice, and melted chocolate. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring, and drink it over the next two decades. Drink: 2010-2026

  • Robert Parker, April 2005, Score: 91-93

A similar blend to the 2002 (55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot), this wine boasts a big, deep purple color and a powerful, sweet nose of caramel, plums, licorice, espresso, scorched earth, and black fruits. Texturally mouthfilling, full-bodied, and opulent, it is intense and deep, with plenty of tannin in the finish. This could be one of the finest Clerc-Milons in recent memory if it all comes together as well as my instincts suggest it will. Drink: 2010-2025.

  • James Suckling, April 2004, Score: 95-100

Licorice and mineral with currants. Full-bodied, supertight and rich, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish. A real beauty. This is a thick and powerful blockbuster--one of my old favorites. 6,500 cases made.

  • Decanter, April 2004

Very deep ruby, concentrated, slightly earthy nose, lots of pure blackcurrant fruit and lots of ripeness on the palate and firm tannins to hold this in. Drink: 2010-2025.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
