  • Goedhuis, 2005

Engel's Clos Vougeot comes from a parcel of vines located above the Château which are between 40 to over 100 years old. Slightly less silky than Echézeaux with notes of warm cinnamon spice and wild raspberry, it has a wonderful intensity on the palate which lingers long and full. Possibly the best Clos Vougeot tasted on our trip. Drink: 2013 - 2020+

  • Burghound, January 2006, Score: 89-92

Pungent wood spice and a reserved and subdued nose of black cherry, plum and notable ripe cassis notes highlight rich, full, earthy and moderately robust and muscular full-bodied flavors that culminate in solid power and excellent length. The wood here, while not subtle, is more integrated than with the Grands Ech. Drink: 2011+.

Domaine René Engel is between Nuits St. George and Gevrey-Chambertin, in the heart of one of the smallest communes but also one of the most prestigious, that René Engel founded the Domaine that bears his name. In 1981 Philippe Engel took over the domaine following his father's death. Philippe cares for thevineyard by replanting dead vine stock, purifying soil impoverished by potassium and reducing yields by means of a very severe selection of grapes using a sorting table. In the realm of vinification, he has replaced old barrels and has introduced more frequent racking. Light filtering has allowed him to produce more expressive wines gaining a reputation as fat, authentic and elegant. Recently joined by his brother Frédéric, Philippe believes in the terroir as well as producing quality wines with structure and personality.Read less
