  • Burghound, July 2007, Score: 95

A deft touch of wood frames very ripe aromas of honeysuckle, spice, white flower, peach, pear and anise that introduce remarkably powerful and full-bodied flavors oozing with dry extract that buffers the firm acid spine on the hugely long finish. This is a flat out big wine by any standard but it's particularly massive by the standards of the 2004 vintage which generally produced leaner and more elegant wines. However here the dry extract levels are such that the finish is almost chewy yet this is as refined and pure as any recent vintage with the possible exception of the '96. This will require at least a decade to be at its best and not surprisingly, it would be advisable to give it this time as the overall impression is closed, reticent and youthfully austere at present. I very much like the '04 version but for those used to greater flamboyancy à la the 2003, it would perhaps be better to choose another vintage as this is likely to always remain a discreet wines by the standards of the Domaine's Montrachet. Drink: 2014+.

Co-owned by the Villaine and the Leroy/Roch families, this historic domaine in the Côtes de Nuits produces arguably the world’s greatest wine and has become the standard against which all others are judged. It is named after its flagship vineyard, the famous monopole La Romanee-Contée which was first planted by the monks from the Abbaye de Saint Vivant in the Middle Ages and came into the possession of the Prince of Conti in 1760 who kept the wines solely for his own private consumption. The vines were replanted in 1947 and before that remained untouched since pre-phylloxera days. The domaine acquired its other monopole, La Tâche in 1933 and also built up significant holdings in other grand cru vineyards over the 19th and 20th century such as Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux and Le Montrachet. Incredibly, all the wines produced by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti are from vineyards classified as Grand Cru, the highest designation available in Burgundy.Read less

Region

Le Montrachet

Le Montrachet is the most famous white Burgundy Grand Cru coming from a single 8 hectare vineyard which overlaps into the communes of Puligny and Chassagne. Even as far back as the 18th century the wines of Le Montrachet had to be reserved a year in advance - a distant precursor to the en primeur system. The south east facing vineyards give the vines maximum exposure to the sun which combined with the limestone soil produces epic results.
