  • Goedhuis, April 2006, Score: 90-92+

Ripe and satiny, the 2005 Berliquet displays notes of sweet plump fruit and toasted oak that linger consistently throughout the palate. Purity as opposed to power. Drink 2010 - 2020.

Resiny characteristics combined with notions of black cherries, cassis, herbs, and new oak emerge from this deep ruby/purple-colored 2005. Medium to full-bodied, moderately tannic, and impeccably well-made, consumption during its first 10-15 years of life is recommended. Drink 2006-2021.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2006, Score: 16

Dark purple. Sweet, ripe but comfortable and relatively refreshing nose. Lots of intensity and energy. Some oak still on the nose - but very good quality oak! Quite glamorous and rich and satiny. A seductive wine with quite marked acidity but no shortage of substance and well-managed tannins. A bit of alcohol on the finish. Definite sweetness throughout. Drink 2014-25.

  • Wine Spectator, April 2006, Score: 98-91

Black licorice and blackberry aromas. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a fresh finish. Balanced and pretty.

Château Berliquet

This overlooked château was purchased by the Wertheimer brothers of Chanel in August 2017, who also own neighbouring Ch Canon as well as Margaux property Ch Rauzan Ségla. The team at Ch Canon are undertaking major changes in the vineyard and cellar, and this 10 hectare estate’s future looks bright.

Region

St Emilion

South of Pomerol lies the medieval, perched village of St Emilion. Surrounding St Emilion are vines that produce round, rich and often hedonistic wines. Despite a myriad of soil types, two main ones dominate - the gravelly, limestone slopes that delve down to the valley from the plateau and the valley itself which is comprised of limestone, gravel, clay and sand. Despite St Emilion's popularity today, it was not until the 1980s to early 1990s that attention was brought to this region. Robert Parker, the famous wine critic, began reviewing their Merlot-dominated wines and giving them hefty scores. The rest is history as they say. Similar to the Médoc, there is a classification system in place which dates from 1955 and outlines several levels of quality. These include its regional appellation of St Emilion, St Emilion Grand Cru, St Emilion Grand Cru Classé and St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, which is further divided into "A" (Ausone and Cheval Blanc) and "B" (including Angélus, Canon, Figeac and a handful of others). To ensure better accuracy, the classification is redone every 10 years enabling certain châteaux to be upgraded or downgraded depending on on the quality of their more recent vintages.
