    A stunning effort from this property in St.-Christophe des Bardes, this 25-acre vineyard is planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Made in a flamboyant style for the vintage, it reveals a dense purple color along with an expressive, ostentatious nose of sweet cherry liqueur intermixed with creme de cassis, toast, spring flowers, incense, melted licorice, and chocolate. Full-bodied with high but sweet, velvety tannins, it is already approachable, but promises to develop more nuances over the next decade. It should last for 20+ years. Kudos to the proprietor and his wine consultant, Stephane Derenoncourt. Drink: 2008 - 2028.

    A breakthrough effort for this 25-acre vineyard in St.-Christophe des Bardes, this blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc boasts the talented Stephane Derenoncourt as its consultant. The dense ruby/purple hue is accompanied by aromas and flavors of sweet cherries, cassis, pain grille, and spice. Full-bodied with moderately high but sweet, well-integrated tannin, this beauty should age effortlessly for 15 or more years. Drink: 2007 - 2022.

    As are many 2005s, this is the finest wine yet produced at this property. La Bienfaisance’s clay and limestone soils have resulted in a black/purple-colored effort displaying superb aromas of melted licorice, espresso roast, black fruits, and spice. Rich and pure, with good acidity, plenty of definition, and a heady, layered, powerful mouthfeel as well as texture, it will benefit from 3-4 years of cellaring, and drink well for 15-20 years. Drink: 2009 - 2026.

    The 2005 La Bienfaisance is a rich, concentrated wine with loads of blackcurrant and black cherry fruit along with some earthiness and subtle background oak. It is medium to full-bodied, ripe, and extremely well-made in a progressive, modern St.-Emilion style. Drink it over the next decade.

South of Pomerol lies the medieval, perched village of St Emilion. Surrounding St Emilion are vines that produce round, rich and often hedonistic wines. Despite a myriad of soil types, two main ones dominate - the gravelly, limestone slopes that delve down to the valley from the plateau and the valley itself which is comprised of limestone, gravel, clay and sand. Despite St Emilion's popularity today, it was not until the 1980s to early 1990s that attention was brought to this region. Robert Parker, the famous wine critic, began reviewing their Merlot-dominated wines and giving them hefty scores. The rest is history as they say. Similar to the Médoc, there is a classification system in place which dates from 1955 and outlines several levels of quality. These include its regional appellation of St Emilion, St Emilion Grand Cru, St Emilion Grand Cru Classé and St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, which is further divided into "A" (Ausone and Cheval Blanc) and "B" (including Angélus, Canon, Figeac and a handful of others). To ensure better accuracy, the classification is redone every 10 years enabling certain châteaux to be upgraded or downgraded depending on on the quality of their more recent vintages.
