  • Robert Parker, April 2008, Score: 85

An uninspiring effort for this vintage, the 2005 Lafleur-Gazin exhibits herbal, spicy notes along with damp earth, mushroom, and cherry scents. It is a medium-bodied, one-dimensional effort of modest depth and richness. Drink it over the next decade. Drink: 2008 - 2018.

  • Robert Parker, April 2007, Score: 85-87

This wine had just been fined when I tasted it, and was undoubtedly slightly restrained and dull because of that. Elegant plum, earth, pepper, and herbal notes can be found in this medium-bodied, somewhat superficial cuvee that lacks the depth and richness necessary to merit a higher score. Drink it during its first 10-12 years of life. Drink: 2007 - 2019.

  • Robert Parker, April 2006, Score: 86-88

Spicy, earthy, Provencal-like garrigue notes emerge from this 2005 Pomerol. It possesses moderate ripeness, loads of animal-like characteristics, leathery, gritty tannins, good fruit, and medium body. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016.

Producer

Château Lafleur-Gazin

Located in between the two better known chateaux of Lafleur and Gazin at the eastern end of Pomerol, this estate is run by the family firm of Moueix based in nearby Libourne.

Region

Pomerol

The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
