Clos de Tarte is a wholly owned vineyard in Morey St Dénis in Burgundy which produces fine, silky red wine. It was originally founded by Cistercian sisters from Notre Dame de Genlis in 1250.

This hasn't changed much from when I first reviewed it from bottle in 2007 though it has not shut down in the fashion of many '05s at this point. An expressive and very ripe black berry fruit, spice, mocha, fresh coffee and earthy nose is surrounded by a more moderate touch of oak that continues onto the rich, full, concentrated, powerful and sweet flavors that possess superb mid-palate density and huge length. This is an extremely rich and concentrated wine that will live for ages and in fact, about the only thing that has changed is that it appears even more structured than I initially thought. In a word, fantastic. Drink: try 2025+.

This is an extremely rich wine and because of the influence of the wood, the detail that will very likely come with time in bottle has not yet developed. As such, my score offers the benefit of the doubt that both the finer detail this wine generally displays as well as better integration of the wood will arrive as this ages. Still, there is terrific raw material and this is definitely built for the long haul and should amply reward 15 years or so of patience. Drink: 2020+.

This will live for ages and somewhat surprisingly, this is actually approachable now simply because it is so concentrated yet I suspect that when this finally shuts down, it will stay there for the better part of a decade. In a word, fantastic.
Morey St. Dénis often suffers from an identity crisis. They are more fruit forward than the wines of Gevrey Chambertin, yet more structured than those of Chambolle Musigny. It seems in this sensethat they are like middle children, always wanting to please yet not standing out as the noisy one or the notably quiet one. They are however crowd pleasers and for those who feel that Gevreys are too muscular and Chambolles too feminine; Moreys seem just right, offering velvety tannins and tangible fruit. The village offers five grand cru vineyards including Clos de la Roche, Clos St. Dénis and Clos des Lambrays which nonetheless can rival those of neighbouring villages in terms of quality (some even view them as the best in the Côte de Nuits) and various premier cru vineyards.
