  • Neal Martin, January 2010, Score: 90

More expressive on the nose than the Grand Cru Blanchot. Chalk, white flowers, nectarine and a touch of dried orange peel and green apple. The palate is medium-bodied, better balanced with more mineralité coming through with gentle swirling of the glass, leading to an elegant, chalky finish. Superb. Drink 2011-2020.

  • Burghound, October 2009, Score: 92-95

This is perhaps the most elegant of these grands crus with its white flower and mineral reduction aromas nuanced by oyster shell hints that continue onto the rich, powerful and minutely detailed middle weight flavors that are precise, lemony and beautifully balanced on the strikingly long finish. In a word, terrific.

  • Stephen Tanzer, July 2009, Score: 91-94

Steely aromas of underripe pineapple, white peach and oyster shell. Dense, tactile and distinctlysappy, showing much less inner-mouth sweetness but more precision than the Grenouilles. This is also aged in 50% oak but is much less marked by the wood. The bright lime and mineral flavors arecomplemented by a smoky, flinty silex quality. A very firmly built wine and the longest of these 2008s, with lovely energy and lift to its finishing flavors of lime and crushed stone.

  • Jancis Robinson, November 2009, Score: 17.5

Very tingly on the nose and with real spirit and lift on the palate. Racier than the Blanchot with real solidity. Very fine. 2012-2024.

  • Anthony Rose, January 2010, Score: 93

Lovely intense and complex nose, a touch of oak on the nose and palate but barely perceptible and redeemed by classic chablis flavours of apple and stonefruit and a lovely intensity and balance, finishing with fine mineral streak, one that should age well for 10 years plus.

It is quite something to be the 14th generation of your family making wines in the same town since 1620. Unsurprisingly over this 400-year period, the Droins have built up a sizeable 26-hectare estate and an enviable portfolio of appellations from both Grands and Premiers Crus within the Chablis region. Benoît joined his father at the estate in 1999 at the age of 24, and for the last decade has assumed total control. During this period, he has continued the family’s respect for their fine terroir and soil but has quietly adjusted the winemaking style. The use of oak is less prevalent today than in his father Jean-Paul’s time, resulting in a greater terroir identity to the domaine’s wines and a mineral drive and edge. At the risk of testing his natural modesty, Benoît is very firmly positioning himself and the estate as one of Chablis’s greats. Regularly achieving top spot in blind tastings, in our view his brilliance is unsurpassed today.Read less

Region

Chablis

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
