  • Burghound, January 2010, Score: 92-95

A slightly less elegant but more complex nose that is very pinot with a superb range of spice and fruit elements woven into the aromatic framework but the primary non-fruit nuance is a very distinctive rose petal character that gives way to detailed, pure and vibrant broad-shouldered flavors that drive home to an explosive, powerful and tautly muscled finish. Like the Grands Ech, this is very primary and backward at present and the component pieces, particularly the tannic spine, have not yet completely harmonized yet it's not hard to imagine that this should be very impressive in time..lots of time that is. Drink: 2028+.

  • Burghound, January 2011, Score: 94

A slightly less elegant but more complex nose that is intensely floral with a superb range of spice and fruit elements woven into the aromatic framework but the primary non-fruit nuance is a very distinctive rose petal character that gives way to detailed, pure and vibrant broad-shouldered flavors that drive home to an explosive, powerful, linear and tautly muscled finish where effects of the stem are quite evident. This is at present extremely backward and it’s clear that not all of the structural elements are in sync. Drink: 2028+.

Co-owned by the Villaine and the Leroy/Roch families, this historic domaine in the Côtes de Nuits produces arguably the world’s greatest wine and has become the standard against which all others are judged. It is named after its flagship vineyard, the famous monopole La Romanee-Contée which was first planted by the monks from the Abbaye de Saint Vivant in the Middle Ages and came into the possession of the Prince of Conti in 1760 who kept the wines solely for his own private consumption. The vines were replanted in 1947 and before that remained untouched since pre-phylloxera days. The domaine acquired its other monopole, La Tâche in 1933 and also built up significant holdings in other grand cru vineyards over the 19th and 20th century such as Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux and Le Montrachet. Incredibly, all the wines produced by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti are from vineyards classified as Grand Cru, the highest designation available in Burgundy.Read less
