  • Goedhuis, January 2011

Pretty, poised and polished, the gorgeous 2009 Clos des Lambrays offers a plump palateful of juicy, sappy Pinot fruit yet remains pure and focused. Coy, yet flirty. Incredibly well balanced and succulent for 100% whole bunch fermentation. Finishes beautifully long and delineated.

  • Neal Martin, January 2011

Like the Morey Loups, this is very stalky and a little green on the nose (the wine is entirely whole bunch fermented.). The palate has hard tannins and distinctly peppery, severe, rather raw finish. Again, not a wine begging to be judged at this stage, bearing in mind how much the 2008 improved after bottling.

  • Burghound, January 2012, Score: 93

An intensely floral and spicy nose that is wonderfully elegant and admirably pure speaks of red currant, blue berry, game, smoke and warm earth. The silky-textured, precise and mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors possess copious extract that does a fine job of buffering the very firm tannins and allowing for perfect balance on the mouth coating and impressively persistent finish. A seductive and relatively accessible Clos des Lambrays that should be approachable with only a decade of cellar time yet last for 25 to 40 years. Drink: 2021+.Notes: produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 45 years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 20+ years of age; vinified with 100% whole clusters.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2011, Score: 17

Relatively pale. Particularly aromatic. Very sweet start – a bit like the village wine squared. Lots of vitality. I can't see this wine winning blind tastings though it is certainly relaxed andauthentic. I reckon the village wine is the best buy here. Some raw fruit at the moment.

  • Tim Atkin, February 2011, Score: 95

There's no denying the slight stalkiness in this wine from partial whole bunchfermentation, but it's a very complex Pinot, with masses of savoury depth and asmoky, nuanced finish.

This Morey Saint Denis domaine may have passed through various owners over the recent decades, but one noticeably steadfast mark on Burgundy’s landscape has been Thierry Brouin, making the wines at this iconic estate since 1979 until his retirement in 2017. His signature style of whole bunch vinification for the grand cru has carved an esteemed place for Thierry in Burgundy’s story. The domaine was recently purchase by Bernard Arnault of LVMH, and a new régisseur has been installed. Boris Champy has nearly 10 years’ experience in the Côte d’Or working at Louis Latour, and before that in California and Bordeaux. He and Thierry worked closely alongside each other in 2017, ensuring a smooth handover. Tantalisingly short of a monopole, the domaine owns 8.66 hectares of the 8.8 ha Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru in the heart of Morey Saint Denis. As well as the substantial Clos, the domaine also has vines in premier cru and village sites within Morey, and added two small premier cru plots in Puligny Montrachet in the 1990s.Read less

Region

Clos des Lambrays

Clos des Lambrays is a Grand Cru appellation situated in the commune of Morey St Denis in the Cote de Nuits. The 8.8 hectares of land, largely owned by the Saier family, were elevated from Premier Cru to Grand Cru status in 1979 as the vineyards clearly had huge potential. Nestled between Gevrey Chambertin to the north and Chambolle Musigny to the south the best Clos des Lambrays wines combine the feminine delicacy of Chambolle with the power and structure of Gevrey.
