Superb earthy wild berry fruits, this is a naturally weighty and slightly more masculine Vosne Romanée. A wine of great structure whilst remaining beautifully harmonious. The layers of concentrated flavours make this wine potentially even better than Sylvain's brilliant 2005. A wineof real depth and class.

Tasted out of barrel at the Domaine. As usual, the nose is more closed and introverted than the other Vosne Premier Crus, but it reluctantly unfurls to reveal darker, more broody fruit with hints of violet. The palate is very structured, more stoic but with great breeding. This is a long-term wine that may not show its true colours for several years, but once again there is great mineralité showing on the long, persistent finish. Intuition tells me that this may eventually surpass the RSV.

  • Burghound, January 2012, Score: 94

A highly perfumed nose of classic Vosne-style spice and ripe black fruit is trimmed in quite generous wood treatment that for the moment is borderline too much. Like the '09 Vosne villages, this is definitely on the robust side with powerful middle weight plus flavors that possess excellent concentration on the tightly focused and solidly structured and mildly austere finish that delivers explosive and striking length. Malconsorts is naturally masculine and this very ripe and serious example is very much in that mold. Note that there is so much underlying material that my score assumes that the liberal oak treatment will be integrated in time as this is definitely a wine that is built for the long-term.Drink: 2024+.Notes: from a .74 ha parcel of 35+ year old vines.Comments: outstanding!

A highly perfumed nose of classic Vosne-style spice and ripe black fruit that is pure and high-toned dissolves seamlessly into relatively robust and powerful middle weight plus flavors that possess excellent concentration on the tightly focused and solidly structured finish that delivers explosive and striking length. Malconsorts doesn't get much better than this. Drink: 2021+.Comments: sweet spot outstanding!

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2011, Score: 17

I had the huge pleasure of tasting this wine in three different casks: a Remond Tronçais, a François Frères and a Remond Jupilles from the forest of Bertrange in Nievre. The wine is very much in the Cathiard style with bright crimson colour, round fruit and fresh elegance, though in the Tronçais barrel it had a trace of oak and definitely needed to gain a bit of depth. The François Frères example had the most structure, seemed drier and was particularly vibrant whereas the wine from the Jupilles barrel was almost silky smooth. Lucky Cathiard has 15 casks' worth of this winefrom a plot next to La Tâche, although he had to buy out his three sisters' shares.

  • Tim Atkin, February 2011, Score: 95

Very closed when I tasted it from barrel, and again in London, this is dense, chewyand quite firm, especially for the vintage, but it has amazing depth and concentration.

He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
